US, April 2, 2008 - If you've got half a brain, you already know that robots are going to take over the earth and destroy us all. We're a bit fuzzy on the details for Pixar's latest movie, but we can only assume that this must be at least part of the basis for the upcoming Wall-E film. Oh sure, it's cute and cuddly on the outside, but on the inside lies the gruesome underbelly; a vacuum of truth. Robots will inherent the earth.

But we'll keep it "E for Everyone" for this hands-on, which revolves around a game that is exactly that. Wall-E for Wii follows the story of a young robot that is about as far from world domination as possible, instead remaining as the last "living" thing on earth to some extent. With only roaches to befriend him, this young trash gathering robo travels the earth, crushing filth into tiny cubes and stacking them one by one until the entire planet is as neat as the warehouse from the Indiana Jones movies. Of course the movie wouldn't be any fun if that's all that happened, so in the film (and game) young Wall-E is met by a hot chica-robo named Eve, and typical kid-friendly animated content follows per the Pixar formula.

So what's up with the game, you ask? Well unless you've been stranded alone on a planet stacking trash cubes your whole life, you undoubtedly already know the score when it comes to licensed products, THQ, and the marketing machine that is animated Pixar movies. Every year or so we get new films, and with them come new games. Wall-E is one of those games, but it also has some potential as being a great accompaniment to what will most certainly be a classic theatrical release; Pixar movies always seem to be. Rather than moving too far from what Wall-E is all about, the game follows the story in a pretty linear fashion, kicking it off with the little robot on Earth alone, and then going through the paces in what ends up being an interactive movie of sorts. You'll hit up the same locales, meet the same people, and play within the world Pixar created.

On Wii, it's always a gamble as to what exactly you're getting. Is it going to be a PS2 port? Is it worth your time and cash? Wall-E is a pretty strong title as far as all that is concerned, as the game is actually ported down from the 360 and PS3 versions, and not brought up from the PS2 build of the game, which is actually very different from what from THQ and developer Heavy Iron Studios has told us. The game is laid out in a typical third person action/platformer design, having players use both Wii-mote and nunchuk to control Wall-E, using his main function of block building to puzzle solve, and a few hilarious animations for scooting around the world and rolling in block form after jumping via Monkey Ball. The game's environments are pretty sizable, showing that larger worlds can be done on Wii, and the fact that the game borrows levels and assets from the 360 build is a great testament to how well Wii can hang in there with the "big boys," even if the textures are scaled down, poly count is lower, and draw distance isn't quite what you'd get on the bigger systems. Some of the in-game effects – such as the sand storm in the first level – are pretty impressive, and having the benefit of all the "core SKU" animations and environments really helps the production.

Wii also uses the havoc engine for all in-game physics, and while that won't mean a single thing to the age group that most likely is picking this one up, we can appreciate the clunky bouncing of Wall-E in cube form, or the way shattered enemies fall to the ground. It's a nice touch. The game still has the typical issues found in early offerings of a game (we call it "first pass-itis"), so we of course saw some strange collisions, poppy graphics, and areas that were far from finished during our hands-on, but looking past the bug database there's definite potential for the game, and it's obvious that Heavy Iron knows what its doing. The interface system is all flash-made, with some IR functionality and "grab and move" control for the options wheels, and the control scheme is a decent mix of motion and buttons, using IR only when needed, and keeping things simple enough to not doom the game to a state of over-waggle.

Aside from the main platforming elements of the game, Wall-E also has areas where the robot himself and Eve team together in a sort of Banjo Kazooie fashion, allowing for blaster fire from the flying – obviously Apple designed – robo, and longer jumps via Eve's jet. There are also on-rails shooter levels which we have yet to see in action, in addition to some flight levels with Eve, and run-n-gun sections during a specific story arc where Wall-E gets Eve's blaster cannon, making for some screaming robot plus IR blasting moments. Good fun. Wrap the package up with a collection of mini-games specific to the Wii version (again, yet to be seen), and you could have the makings for a great game to pair with the film itself.

There are some areas of concern, but it's still early on. The pointer is still off for shooting, which is impacted in a huge way from the sketchy frame rate thus far. In addition, the camera can get a bit annoying, which makes precision platforming and combat rough around the edges. We'll keep you posted as production continues, but we expect it'll all be ironed out in time for release. Wall-E is slated to ship along with the movie's debut, which is currently holding a June 27, 2008 release date.
