>He is angry people still mention Evangelion in relation to Gainax. Nobody that worked at Eva is still at Gainax.
>Anno is very disappointed in Gainax and wants to reveal everything about his turbulent relationship with the company.
>Anno joined Gainax to work with them creatively. He didn't believe that administrative and creative work could mix, so he left all management to other people
>At the start, Gainax was the perfect studio for him. The management team was weak from the start, but he could express himself creatively. Even if they were on the tightrope in terms of money, he continued to produce anime successfully until Evangelion ended up being a big success.
>Eva's success is the curse that killed Gainax. They weren't ready to have so much money. With Eva making unprecedented profits for Gainax, the company began moving in weird directions.
>Anno proceeds to detail his relationship with Gainax.
>Originally, Anno was going produce Eva at a different company with King Records' funding. Gainax didn't have the production capacities to finish Eva. In the end, he made it at Eva together with Tatsunoko Productions' support.
>Eva turned out to be a massive hit, and suddenly Gainax was earning more money than they ever expected. Thanks to King Records' good intentions, rather than Gainax, everyone ended up making money, including the production staff who originally worked for a low fee.
>At first, Anno thought things were fine. Well, if I'm making money, it's OK, right?
>Things start going awry at this point. Gainax starts many random projects that go nowhere and only give them loses. But Gainax doesn't care because "we made Eva, we have money, lmao". However, at that point, because the money was being generated through merchandise, there was little money going to staff, who was just wasting their time and efforts on fruitless projects.
>Profits from Eva merch and software and video were so large in 1999 that Gainax's CEO of the time, completely inexperienced in handling money, was arrested for tax evasion.
>The next CEO was Yamaga, who asked Anno to trust him since they were friends. But Yamaga didn't earn Anno's trust. Management was still a mess, and there was a huge bias in salaries.
>Anno wanted to do a new project in 2004-2005, and when he went to read the money books he was appalled by what he found.
>Gainax's management continued being wasteful and bad with money.
>Anno decided that he couldn't keep working with Gainax, and he decided that the Eva remakes couldn't be made at Gainax.
>Gainax was already working on a new TV series at the time (Gurren-Lagann) with, at the time, young staff. He knew that if he stayed around they wouldn't be able to work on it. Besides, he wanted to ensure the money was properly managed and not wasted. He also wanted to make sure those winning money from a hit anime were the anime's staff.
>At first, Khara wasn't really meant to be a new production studio. It was more like a management office and they were going to get hired staff for the Eva movies. But Anno thinks that isn't enough. He wants Eva to be his instead of Gainax, so in 2007 he quits Gainax and establishes Gainax as a full production studio. Now people should associate Eva with Anno and not Eva with Gainax. But at that point, Eva commercialization and merch rights were still Gainax's. Gainax commercializes Eva and pays a percentage of the earnings to Khara. And things were going fine until 2012. At that point, payments to Khara from Gainax start being delayed. Gainax's management was deteriorating further.
>Khara offers Gainax the opportunity to pay in installments and Yamaga and Takeda agree.
>And this is only for Eva, nothing about Nadia or Gunbuster belongs to Anno. He has no right over those.
>But then, in 2014, Gainax's directive came to Anno and asked for a loan. "If we don't get 100 million yen in 3 days, Gainax will go under." Anno agreed, but only if Gainax gave him the rights to Evangelion commercialization. Takeda had no choice but to agree. The loan was interest-free, and they could pay it on installments over the next 10 years.
>Nobody would agree to that kind of generous loan with such loose conditions, but Yamaga was Anno's school friend. So things were going to be fine, right?
>To help Gainax further, Anno even offered to buy the rights for FLCL, Gunbuster and Diebuster for generous amounts. Anno almost finishes purchasing them, but one day Yamaga told him the price was now 6 times what they had originally agreed. Anno was confused. Next year, he found out that Gainax underwent restructuring and needed more money so they sold the works to companies offering more money. He thinks priority was given to money over the development of the work or the feelings of the production staff.
>Gainax, however, promises Khara that they will pay accordingly. However, the years pass and they stop answering Khara's calls.
>A new company called Fukushima Gainax was established in 2015 without Anno's knowledge. The company was originally fully owned by Gainax but it suddenly comes an independent entity. Later, when Gainax started being involved in financial problems, Fukushima Gainax claimed they had no relationship with Gainax. Anno thinks the whole thing is suspicious.
>In April 2016, the expected payments from Gainax were suddenly delayed. Even when Anno asked for an explanation, Gainax did not respond. It was impossible to contact Yamaga (who was president at that time) either by e-mail, telephone or even directly. Under such circumstances, the number of companies called GAINAX started appearing in various parts of Japan.
>Shortly before the establishment of Fukushima Gainax, Yonago Gainax was established in Tottori Prefecture in May 2014. In April 2016, GAINAX WEST Co., Ltd. was established in Hyogo Prefecture, and, in July of the same year, Gainax Niigata Co., Ltd. was established in Niigata Prefecture. These companies were established without any notice to Khara."
>In 2017, a person who joined Gainax West as CEO caused problems in an anime related event he produced in 2017 in Kobe. This affected business partners and the government. Gainax West was essentially shut down as a result.
>even more Gainax companies keep popping up, Anno realized something was wrong and decided to take legal action
>Anno says that more than the money, the lawsuit was for Gainax to grant them the production materials for all the shows his team had worked on; the lawsuit wasn't supposed to go public, but it became public when Gainax decided to fight it
>Khara won the lawsuit, but they found out Gainax was but a hollow shell now
