Juve's Late Surge Earns Draw Against Ten-Man Inter
Internazionale 2-2 Juventus
In a thoroughly eventful Derby d'Italia, Inter raced to a 2-0 lead despite their ten-man status, before late strikes put the Old Lady narrowly in control ahead of the second leg...
Burdisso's eighth-minute red card scarcely seemed to discourage Inter, who raced to a two goal advantage thanks to Julio Cruz. However, late goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Jean-Alain Boumsong gave Juve a priceless draw ahead of the second leg.
Both sides had some regulars missing, with Toldo and Belardi in the respective goals, but there was still no shortage of talent on display, with Cruz and Iaquinta starting up front.
And after just a few minutes, Marchionni had to limp off, meaning that David Trezeguet arrived to produce a very much attacking Juve lineup.
That seemed to be almost a clairvoyant move on coach Ranieri's part, for just a minute later, Inter stopper Burdisso was sent off after a rather strange tackle from behind on Del Piero.
Juventus went on to control the early stages, but Toldo and the depleted back line were holding their own.
Afterwards, Inter, perhaps mindful that there wasn't much of a threat, felt more inclined to press forward, the Old Lady being restricted to free-kicks and corners.
Indeed, Inter began to look more dangerous, and just after the interval, Cruz made it 1-0. The powerful striker got on the end of a long ball from Pele to head home as both Belardi and defender Legrottaglie stood off.
Cards began to fly as the game became bogged down in midfield, and Inter sought to protect their lead by bringing off Crespo for Cambiasso. (Just before, the booked Birindelli went off for Boumsong in a change that, while unusual, proved crucial.)
For the time being, Inter seemed well in control, with Cruz making it 2-0 fifteen minutes from time. The forward snuck in to the six yard box to tap Cesar's cross past Belardi as the stunned Juve defence looked on.
Just afterwards, though, Juve were back in the game. Molinaro's fine cross found Trezeguet, who in turn teed it up for Del Piero to beautifully volley home.
Juventus were now in control, and Boumsong was able to rise above everyone to head home off the underside of the crossbar - his leaving present, perhaps, but what a vital one. Juve thus take a narrow advantage to Turin for the second leg...

JUVENTUS: Belardi; Birindelli (Boumsong 67 mins), Legrottaglie, Grygera, Molinaro; Marchionni (Trezeguet 7 mins), Nocerino, Cristiano Zanetti, Palladino; Del Piero, Iaquinta

INTER MILAN: Toldo; Burdisso, Rivas, Materazzi (Vieira 79 mins), Maxwell; Solari (Javier Zanetti 56 mins), Pelé, Maniche, Cesar; Cruz, Crespo (Cambiasso 67 mins).
Orlandoni, Cordoba, Balotelli
Inter Qualify After Five Goal Thriller
Juventus 2 – 3 Inter
A great encounter, and a worthy Derby d'Italia. This could have been won by either side, as Juventus and Inter produced an amazing and exciting display, but the evening belonged to Balotelli, who scored a fine brace to send his side to the semis...
Inter arrived at this game essentially needing a win in order to meet Lazio in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia, and that is exactly what Roberto Mancini’s side achieved after a hard fought encounter.
The game started off as it had ended in the first leg: fearless. This guaranteed some great entertainment for the impressive crowd at the Olimpico stadium, considering that it was ‘just’ a Coppa match.
After a good start by Juventus, Inter took the lead in the 10th minute through the young Balotelli, who took advantage of an indecision by Birindelli to break through the defence. As he reached the goal, he had no problem slotting the ball in past Belardi.
The Bianconeri reacted straight away, and in the 14th minute Del Piero equalized with one of his trademark free-kicks, although video replays showed that there was a deflection by the Inter wall which fooled Toldo.
In the 20th minute Maniche almost scored his first goal for theNerazzurri over a week ago, but his shot from the distance was parried by Belardi before it hit the bar, and was in any case cleared by the Juve's defence.
Del Piero proved to be in an inspired form, and in the 24th minute he went past his marker before crossing towards the middle, where Legrottaglie's header went just high. Two minutes later the Juventus captain ran for over 50 metres through the Inter half before Pele fouled him on the edge of the penalty area. However, from the following free-kick, Del Piero shot high.
In the 31st minute the Bianconeri took the lead for the first time in the game as a Del Piero free kick was headed towards goal by Stendardo, only for Toldo to parry the ball towards the post. Iaquinta was quick to react and headed the ball into the net from close range to put the Old Lady 2-1 up.
Despite all the emotion so far, the first half was far from over, and in the 38th minute the Nerazzurri were awarded a penalty kick for a handball by Salihamidzic following a shot by Jimenez. (Video replays proved that the referee took the right decision.)
Julio Cruz took the responsibility of the penalty kick, and his aim was true. Thus, at 2-2 on the night, the tie was completely even at 4-4 on aggregate.
Juventus were the better side overall in the first half, but in the second Inter began to improve their game. However, the first goal scoring opportunity fell to evergreen Nedved, who from a good position saw his shot saved by Toldo's feet in the 49th minute.
Four minutes later, though, Inter's pressure paid off as they re-took the lead thanks to another goal by the 17-year-old Balotelli. The young progidy received the ball inside the penalty area with his back to the goal, before effortlessly turning and shooting past Belardi for the 3-2.
The goal shocked Juventus, who now needed two goals in order to qualify.
In fact the home side would find it difficult to create goal scoring chances as the tension increased. The referee, Saccani, was finding it difficult to control the temper on either side, despite handling the first half well.
Inter tried to slow the game down and hit back on the counter attack, and this tactic almost proved successful in the 71st minute when Balotelli made a feint, following an assist by Stankovic, to free Cruz all alone in front of Belardi, but the veteran forward's shot went wide.
With the passing of the minutes, the Bianconeri started piling pressure on the Nerazzurri, but the Juve attacks were proving sterile as the Italian champions were holding their line well and not risking too much.
To complicate matters, Camoranesi received a red card in the 85th minute after a cynical and pointless foul on Pele in the middle of the pitch, leaving the Bianconeri with ten men.
In the end it was a wonderful game which could have gone either way, as both sides could be said to have deserved the win. However, Inter emerged as the victors, and thus won the right to face Lazio in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia.
Now, everything seems to be pointing towards another Roma-Inter final.
