Square Enix considering Kingdom Hearts sequel, Final Fantasy VII-2?

Tetsuya Nomura comments on the current possibility of sequels for two of the company's high-profile RPGS.

In the latest issue of Dorimaga, Square Enix designer Tetsuya Nomura--known as the character designer for past Final Fantasy titles and Kingdom Hearts--made a number of comments regarding possibilities of sequels.

On the issue of a Kingdom Hearts sequel, Nomura stated that he would like to clarify that a sequel has not been officially announced at the current time. Nomura said that although he hopes that the title will be developed, Square Enix and Disney have not made any agreements yet. However, Nomura hinted that the possibilities are good, saying that there were already some talks with Disney about making a sequel while Kingdom Hearts was in production.

On the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII-2, Nomura said that the chances of it happening are unrealistic. Nomura explained that Final Fantasy X-2 was able to be released since it utilized the Final Fantasy X engine, allowing production of the game in one year at only half the usual development scale of a Final Fantasy title. However, to make Final Fantasy VII-2, everything would most likely have to be created again from scratch since the data from the original Final Fantasy VII cannot be used. Thus, producing a Final Fantasy VII-2 would require the development scale of a normal Final Fantasy title.

DPM: Are there any chances for a FFVII sequel to be developed as a game after the release of Advent Children?

Nomura : I hope that this project may lead to something, since we woke up something that was sleeping.

In the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine, Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura answered some questions about Kingdom Hearts II for the PlayStation 2, which he will direct. Nomura also answered a few questions about Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the newly announced CG movie that he will also be directing, and the upcoming GBA Kingdom Hearts title, Chain of Memories.

Dengeki PlayStation magazine: When did the plans for Kingdom Hearts II come up?

Tetsuya Nomura: The plans were around since the time when Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix, wrapped production, but the specifics weren't decided until this July or August.

DPM: Why did you decide to produce a Game Boy version of Kingdom Hearts?

TN: I heard a story that kids wanted to play Kingdom Hearts on the GBA. It also seemed that there was a similar demand overseas, so I thought that it had to be created. The plans for the GBA game were thought over while talking with Disney about Kingdom Hearts II. Actually, the vision of the game didn't become concrete until very recently.

DPM: None of the worlds of Disney in Kingdom Hearts II have been revealed. Will it be possible to go through different worlds in Kingdom Hearts II as well?

TN: Of course. The number of worlds in Kingdom Hearts II shouldn't be less than Kingdom Hearts, so please look forward to it. Kingdom Hearts II will have new worlds, and some worlds from Kingdom Hearts will be in the game.

DPM: Will Twilight Town hold the same kind of standpoint in the game, like Traverse Town from Kingdom Hearts?

TN: I can't answer that question, but it is definitely a town that plays an important role and comes into the scenario.

DPM: The illustration (of Twilight Town) has a building that looks like a train station. Will it be possible to go to other worlds by riding on this train?

TN: I can't answer that question yet, but that building has an important meaning.

DPM: Is the island that has been revealed (through a recently released photo) Destiny Island from Kingdom Hearts?

TN: Probably. (Laughs) I can't reveal details yet, so users should try using their imagination.

DPM: Kingdom Hearts II's main illustration shows Mickey Mouse, but will he be appearing at the beginning of the game?

TN: Mickey Mouse will be handled in a special way in Kingdom Hearts II, so I can't answer details at the current time. Other characters from Disney will join in the player's party, similar to Kingdom Hearts.

DPM: Will Sora's friends, Riku and Kairi, appear in Kingdom Hearts II?

TN: A major point to Kingdom Hearts II is whether or not Sora will be able to see them again. So I can't answer that question.

DPM: It seems that there are characters that appear in both the GBA game and KHII?

TN: There are characters that make their first appearances in the GBA game, but please wait for additional news releases for information on them.

DPM: The enemy in Kingdom Hearts II is no longer just the Heartless this time? Also, there are men wearing black jackets, but are they the same people from Kingdom Hearts?

TN: The white enemies seen in Kingdom Hearts II are third forces following the Villains [in each world] and the Heartless from Kingdom Hearts. I can't say who's who amongst the people in the black jackets, but a character from Kingdom Hearts is among them for sure.

DPM: Are there any major changes in the battle system?

TN: The basis (of the battle system) is still the same, but there will be a number of totally new options. With the additional options implemented to the battle system, there should be a wider range of possible strategies in Kingdom Hearts II. There are also a number of changes and additions to the magic and summons in the game. The overall concept of summoning will be different in Kingdom Hearts II, so please look forward.

DPM: What about actions and the transportation system?

TN: There were a variety of actions in Kingdom Hearts, and there will be even more in KHII. As for the gummy ship, we are thinking of something similar to it.

DPM: What about puzzles?

TN: There will probably be lots of objects on the field that the player will be able to meddle with. The story will obviously be complex and have some puzzles in it too, since it continues from points alluded to in Kingdom Hearts.

DPM: Will there be a place like the Coliseum from Kingdom Hearts and other minigames in Kingdom Hearts II?

TN: The coliseum will be incredible. There will also be a lot of minigame factors that can be looked forward to.

DPM: Will all the mysteries from Kingdom Hearts get answered?

TN: All the mysteries from Kingdom Hearts will be answered in Kingdom Hearts II--by design. (Laughs)

DPM: Why was a movie sequel to Final Fantasy VII decided for development, and when was it decided?

TN: About a year back, Visual Works (a company that has developed CG movies for Square) picked FFVII as the theme for a presentation that they were going to create. Our research and development department worked with them on its launch, and I joined the crew after producer Kitase-san called me. It's going to be released as a sequel, but it was planned to just be a visual presentation in the beginning.

DPM: Why is Advent Children a movie instead of a game? Are there any differences between making a game and making a full movie?

TN: First of all, we started off from the project that Visual Works was handling, but they can't make a game on their own. We tried to see if we could make it into a game, but it wasn't possible due to a number of factors. As a result, we decided to stick with the original plan and work on it as a movie production. The development isn't too different from the way we make movies that get used in our games, but our schedule is a bit tight. We need to keep the cost down since it's not a game, but [we still need to] maintain high quality.

DPM: Are there any differences between creating movies for games and creating Advent Children?

TN: There are more efforts put into the textures and the atmosphere. We usually need to balance [the movie graphics] with the game screen, but there are no such limitations in Advent Children, so we're going all out on it.

DPM: What meaning does Final Fantasy VII have for you?

TN: It was the Final Fantasy game that I was most involved in, and it is also my favorite. It's also where the series takes a radical change [from past FF titles].

DPM: How is production going?

TN: We are at about 10 percent done. Not all the characters have been created yet, but the scenario has already been completed.

DPM: Were there any things that you were especially careful about when bringing back Cloud and Sephiroth to the screen?

TN: What you are seeing now is the result of numerous explorations. Since it was impossible to bring the look [from FFVII] directly to the new realistic look (in Advent Children), the characteristics that would allow anybody to recognize Cloud and the others were left behind on them.

DPM: What kind of standing does the new character fighting with Cloud have?

TN: He is an enemy.

DPM: Were the characters in Advent Children's promotional video animated through motion capture?

TN: They were animated by motion capture, but that capture was recently taken for promotional use. It isn't a part of the main movie.

DPM: Are the battle scenes also created through motion capture?

TN: Many are, but parts that aren't humanly possible are done by hand.

DPM: Will the characters have voices? And will it be in English or Japanese?

TN: The characters will have voices, but I can't answer more.

DPM: What is the theme of Advent Children?

TN: Nojima, who handles the scenario, says that it won't be something soft, like healing. It will be about survival.

DPM: Where, specifically, will Advent Children take place? Will it be somewhere from the original Final Fantasy VII?

TN: It's hidden in the logo.

DPM: How long will Advent Children be?

TN: It is planned to run for 60 minutes.

DPM: Are there any chances for a FFVII sequel to be developed as a game after the release of Advent Children?

TN: I hope that this project may lead to something, since we woke up something that was sleeping.

Yoshinori Kitase hints that a Final Fantasy game for Sony's next-generation console is in the works but won't confirm if it's FFXIII.

Square Enix president Youichi Wata showed a technical demonstration of how Final Fantasy VII would look if it were remade for the PlayStation 3. He then made a disclaimer that a new version of the game isn't actually being developed for the console but assured the audience at the presentation that another Final Fantasy game will be coming to the PlayStation 3.

In the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation, the magazine featured an interview with Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase, who's currently working on the PlayStation 2's Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. One of the questions raised in the interview was whether the PlayStation 3 game will be Final Fantasy XIII. As expected, Kitase declined to give an answer, saying, "I can only officially state that we are making a Final Fantasy for the PS3."

However, he also suggested that he is involved as a core staff in the game’s development, stating, "As a hint, one thing I can say is that the FFVII technical PS3 demo was supervised by me and created by Toriyama and his team staff. I'll leave it to you, but you can imagine that development [of the PS3 FF] is happening via a similar process." Motomu Toriyama was one of the directors that worked with Kitase on Final Fantasy X, and he was the main director for Final Fantasy X-2.

Kitase also revealed the Final Fantasy VII technical PS3 demo was actually a rush job, created in just a month and a half. "We created [it] right before E3. I didn't think we could do it at first, but I called Sugimoto (Koji Sugimoto, FFX’s main programmer), and we somehow made it. I believe that if we had more time, we could have made it in a higher quality. In that sense, that demo didn't really take much advantage of the PS3's hardware specs. But still, we were able to make something that looked that good."

When asked if there were any more Final Fantasy VII spin-offs planned in the future, Kitase laughed, commenting, "Well, we'll have to see. There are still characters that might be alive [from the original FFVII]."

Nomura : This is the country to visit next to Lucis. When I went to Italy to exhibit "FFVII Advent Children" at the Venice International Film Festival in 2004 and 2005, I was shocked by the scenery of Venice and the structure of the city, so I chose this as a motif.

LOS ANGELES--Today, Square Enix kicked off E3 week in style with a preshow press conference at the Los Angeles Palladium. The venerable concert venue has hosted decades of blockbuster shows, so it was a fitting location for Square Enix to fire its own triple bombshell.

The company announced that not one, not two, but three Final Fantasy XIII titles are now under development; two for PlayStation 3 and one for cell phones. The company also unveiled two Wii games, including one launch title--Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Furthermore, US role-playing game fans will be pleased that FFXII finally has a North American release date: October 2006.

The three FFXIII games currently in development are: FFXIII and FF Versus XIII (both for PS3) and FF Agito XIII for cell phones. All three titles are part of something that Square Enix has labeled the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project, which it describes as "numerous original titles that run parallel with one another" and share a common mythology. Square Enix promises additional projects in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project beyond the three games announced today. Given the company's expressed commitment to "polymorphic content" it's a safe bet that some of those additional projects will be in non-game media like film.

Square Enix also gave some love to the Wii, announcing two games for Nintendo's new console. Those games were Codename: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Crystal Bearers and the previously mentioned Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. As noted above, the DQ game will be a launch title for the Wii, and a brief concept film made it clear that the Wii's motion-sensing controller will be used to swing an in-game sword.

Square Enix's next-gen games show a laser-sharp focus on the company's classic franchises, and the company's upcoming games for current-generation consoles share that focus. New titles in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises make up the bulk of the company's impending releases, with new entrants in the Valkyrie Profile and Mana series also claiming a share of the limelight.

After some welcoming remarks from Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, Square Enix showed showed concept movies and/or gameplay from all the titles it had previously announced for E3. Each of the games was introduced by its producer or another member of the development team--though unfortunately their remarks were closely scripted and there was no opportunity for Q&A.

For PS2, the company showed Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria, Final Fantasy XII, Dawn of Mana, and Dirge of Cerberus. Dirge of Cerberus got a North American launch date of August 22nd and Square Enix executive Shinji Hashimoto promised exclusive missions and content developed for the North American market. Sony's PSP got previews of Valkyrie Profile Lenneth and FF: Crisis Core.

Turning to Nintendo's portables, Square Enix announced a new DS title today, Codename: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. The company also showed previews of three other DS titles, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime and Final Fantasy III--both of which are launching in September 2006--and Children of Mana, which will launch before the end of 2006.

Meanwhile, for the Gameboy Advance, Square Enix showed Final Fantasy V and VI Advance, both of which will launch before the end of this year.

The company also presented Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan, which has already been released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows platforms.

Square Enix has also found a home for the classic titles it acquired with its purchase of old-school arcade publisher Taito. Square Enix will be bringing a number of Taito's classic franchises to mobile phones, including Elevator Action, Space Invaders and Chase HQ.

Today's press conference was all about new iterations of classic franchises, driving home just how firmly Square Enix believes in its "polymorphic content" strategy. The company discussed this strategy at E3 last year, explaining how leveraging is franchises across multiple platforms and media could help it be profitable while continuing to innovate. Rather than investing in creating and marketing new brands, the company has chosen to stick with proven winners--especially the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series.

The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is an explicit effort at developing polymorphic content that Square Enix announced last year. It consists of four projects: the Advent Children CG movie, the Before Crisis game for cellular phones, the Dirge of Cerberus PS2 game, and the Crisis Core PSP game. Wada sounded pleased with the results of each of the component properties and of the group as a whole. In his words, the compilation has answered the question of "whether synergy between products can be achieved." It looks like we can count on the company for more Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games in the future.

GAMESPOT'S BLOG FROM SQUARE ENIX'S E3 2006 PRESS CONFERENCE

President Yoichi Wada's now taking the stage, wasting no time talking about the promise of next gen and telling us they've got some hot secrets for us today. So let's have 'em already!

1:06 COO Daishiro Okada is now on stage discussing the upcoming lineup. Final Fantasy XII will be out October of this year. Finally. Also some mobile stuff. Space Invaders? Elevator Action? Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episodes also on mobile this summer.

1:10 Now we're getting into the meat with a longtrailer for Final Fantasy XII, all in English. Sounds like they're sparing no expense on the voice acting for this one--it's all appropriately haughty, in line with the tone of the story.

1:18 More trailers for announced, current-gen stuff like Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and the latest FFXI expansion. Now it's Final Fantasy on mobile--I knew my nerd sense was tingling for a reason.

1:24 Looks like their mobile strategy rages unabated--Dirge is the standout since it's all in 3D. Now we've got Final Fantasy III for the DS, billed as "the only Final Fantasy never to reach Western shores." They're urging us to "complete the fantasy" with this 3D remake--fine by me since it looks like the best DS RPG yet.

1:28 Final Fantasies V and VI for GBA--not the biggest news, but near and dear to many hearts for sure. Promised to have new surprises. Now it's Mana time, starting off with the sorta middling Children of. But what's this? Ten years before Children of Mana, a 3D game: Dawn of Mana, of course. More CG than gameplay, but it looks pretty good.

1:32 Once upon a slime! It's Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, which is the most bafflingly adorable name I've ever heard. Apparently, "it's payback slime." So cute, I'm sold. Now Shinji Hashimoto is taking the stage to talk about the utterly unsurprising massive success of the many Final Fantasy VII projects, from Advent Children to Dirge and the mobile games. Hey, and a US date for Dirge: August 22, with new features included.

1:49 I spoke too soon: Here's our first real footage of FFVII Crisis Core for the PSP. Stars Zack of Soldier fame, apparently, and there's a ton of Sephiroth in here (down, boys and girls). No gameplay footage, only real-time cutscenes, but it looks amazing for a PSP game.

1:51 Here we go--Dragon Quest is coming to the Wii. Some dude is fighting a stone golem in a forest. Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Launch title for the Wii! No real footage of the game, but still, big news.

1:54 The hits keep on coming--now we have Akitoshi Kawazu, exec producer of Crystal Chronicles. Two new games from that series: one DS, one Wii. The DS game is Ring of Fates, and it will have Wi-Fi multiplayer (duh). Looks a bit more whimsical than the Cube version, same basic sense of style though. They're showing four players at once, like you'd expect. Yay DS!

1:58 And here comes the Wii title. That Final Fantasy theme still makes me all misty-eyed. Wow, these visuals are nice--random shots of CG-style little dudes fighting bombs and other monsters. If any of that was real-time footage of the game, the Wii graphics ought to do us just fine. Hard to say if it was just CG, though. Code name: Chrystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. No major details on the game available yet, though.

2:02 Final announcement! For PS3! E3 is so damn exciting sometimes. What is it?!

FINAL FANTASY XIII. FINAL FANTASY XIII. They pulled a serious bait and switch on us. Sword-and-gun-wielding heroine who looks like Yuna, flipping her way around a high-tech, futuristic world. No idea what it was until the end when that NAME popped up. Yoshinori Kitase directing! This is the guy behind all the best ones--VI, VII, VIII, X. Be still my heart.

2:08 Sorry, I jumped the gun--Mr. Kitase was merely presenting. Motomu Toriyama will direct the game. And apparently FFXIII isn't the only game coming out of this universe--there's a, uh, mobile game too. Oh. It's Final Fantasy Agito XIII.

Now it's Fabula Nova Crystallis--"the new tale of the crystal" in Latin. They're big on the Latin today. Whoa, wait, another new game? Another PS3 game?! Final Fantasy Versus XIII? They're emphasizing that in Latin, versus means "to change direction." This is a Tetsuya Nomura game, and he's taking the stage now.

2:17 Nomura is providing more details. The CG movie we just saw, featuring a spiky-haired character (natch) squaring off against machine-gun-wielding soldiers, was created by the Advent Children team, but the game itself will be made by the Kingdom Hearts team, and will feature "extreme action elements." He says "bonding" will be the primary theme of the game.

2:20 The conference draws to a close with a comment from Hashimoto that this should demonstrate Square Enix's commitment to next-generation gaming, but that it's "only the beginning." A final movie showcases the name Final Fantasy XIII, as if each new installment in this mega-enormous series is now a franchise unto itself.

Finally, Mr. Wada has retaken the stage. "How did that grab you?" Laughter and applause. Some more commentary on SE's commitment to supporting the next gen. Speaks more about the "synergy between products" being a proven formula with Compilation of FFVII. Looks like they're taking the same tack with FFXIII.

Some more info on FFXIII (can't type fast enough!): The game was begun by the FFX team for PS2, but the team was then derailed to make last year's FFVII PS3 tech demo. They were so happy with the hardware, they decided to then shift development to the new platform. Apparently the game will run on the "White Engine" and will feature the most technologically advanced civilization ever featured in a Final Fantasy. The storyline will center on "those who resist the world." Yeah, OK.

2:27 The conference is officially over, but E3 (and GameSpot) is just getting started. Stay tuned for screens of all this FFXIII madness, and a lot more. And to think, the actual show is still two days away.

Kojima wants to develop on the Wii. he says he would even quit Metal Gear Solid 4 to do it!

In a recent interview with Computer and Video Games, Hideo Kojima has revealed that he is very interested in working on the Wii.

CVG: What are your impressions of Nintendo Wii and how did Snake appear in Smash Brothers?
Kojima: I’ve played Tennis, Zelda and Mario on Wii. I find Tennis very interesting. I played the early version but the E3 version is far more advanced. As a game designer, I’m very interested in creating something for the Wii. I’d like to run away from MGS 4 creation and create something for the Wii but unfortunately, I don’t have anything that I can announce at the moment. I have lots of ideas for Wii but I have a heavy schedule with MGS 4 and Metal Gear Online. Concerning Snake’s appearance on Wii in Smash Brothers, I’m friends with the designer of the game and I thought it would be nice if you could play as Snake - when I heard about the new game last year, I contacted the designer and we started working together.

Unfortunately, Kojima has said numerous times in the past that Metal Gear Solid is a strictly Play Station styled game, so we probably won't be seeing a Metal Gear Solid exclusive title on the Wii anytime soon.

During E3, one of the most anticipated news was the release of Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3. We've given you a load of news about the game and here we are offering you more. Indeed, the short trailer we've received of the game was enough to make hearts flutter. Yes, we love the Final Fantasy franchise. And yes, here they are with another game that would make us lovelorn and vespertine. The full title of the new Final Fantasy Game is Fabula Nova Crystallis : Final Fantasy XIII. To give us more information about the game, Dengeki Online has decided to interview the people behind FFXIII: Yoshinori Kitase (Crystallis producer), Motomu Toriyama (Crystallis Director), Tetsuya Nomura (FF Versus XIII Director), Hajime Tabata (FF Agito XIII director), and Masashi Hashimoto (FF Versus XIII Producer). In this interview, they talked about the production of the game, its graphics and gameplay.

The interview begins with the sudden shift of development for the FFXIII game. It was supposed to be set for the PS2, however, it so happened that the development for PS3 was on its way hence they felt that it was appropriate to develop this game to another level by bringing it to this new engine. Hence, as they were ending Kingdom Hearts II, they decided to take the game into two directions. First is the carrier title which is FFXIII and the other is the FF Versus XIII. FF Agito XIII was something that they decided later on, as a reaction to the success of Before Crisis-FFVII. According to Toriyama, although these are three different titles, they are all based on the same title, hence they are placed under the same FF Franchise. One thing they're hinting is that this game's story involves a myth which is integral to your gameplay. When asked about the logo of the new Final Fantasy game and its relation to this myth, Kitase says "It's a secret." They added that the new logo was the result of Yoshitaka Amano's creative mind, hence this was how he had interpreted the new concept for the FFXIII.

What was truly remarkable about FFXIII was the graphics and gameplay that we have previewed during E3. Dengeki had to ask them whether what people were seeing was merely an FMV or the actually gameplay. Toriyama had to say that for FFXIII, they had to give up the Active Time Battle which has been predominant in other FF titles. Instead, they used a modified version of the old ATB, making your character more reactive allowing you to enter easily in and out of battles. It seems that speed will play a key role in your game play as your game is decided by how fast you input choices for your character. I guess the 'Wait' option is a luxury for those who are playing the released FF games. One more thing that the producers takes pride of is how it can maintain the graphics seen in FFVII-Advent Children even during gameplay. They said that even if the graphics are nice, the gameplay isn't entirely taken down. You can still involve yourself in team battles, hence you can employ strategies whenever you are participating in battles. According to them, with speed and strategy in mind, you can truly experience the greatness of this game. More so. spells have a greater effect with the new graphics engine. For once, players will finally have a greater grasp on what a gravity bomb can do. For this game, magic and mechanics will definitely come together. Could this mean that you now must gas up first before you can fly a Ragnarok? Toriyama stresses that in this game, this attention to detail is very much possible. The world of FFXIII may appear more science fiction than it is a fantasy, but because of the ruling myth that governs the game, it still lives within the realm of fantasy.

The next part of the interview involved the other two games with Final Fantasy XIII: FF Versus XIII and FF Agito XIII. With FF Versus XIII, the science fiction backdrop of Crystallis is dropped for something more familiar to us, a modern cosmopolitan city fused with magic. With FF Versus XIII, the idea of bringing in a more recent view of The World into the gameplay shows us a little bit of magical realism wherein our reality cannot escape the possibility of fantastic things happening to it. FF Versus XIII will have a male lead character and has a darker story compared to Crystallis. As Nomura puts it, if FFXIII is the light, then its shadow would be FF Versus XIII. Because of this aspect, Nomura and his crew find it more difficult to put the story for this game. He added this game was more dark than it is cool as the main character was not built to impress but rather made to tell his dark tale. In FF Versus XIII, the main character encounters tragedy, and according to Nomura and Kitase, nothing is more painful than a tragedy because it often involves the loss of a loved one. By using the word 'versus' in the title, they were hoping to show the contrast of the game to people. The gameplay of FF Versus XIII would be similar to Kingdom Hearts, nonetheless, its story is deeply entrenched within this said FFXIII myth.


Lastly, FF Agito XIII was discussed by Dengeki Online. Although this is a mobile phone game, its scale is no different from that of its PS3 brothers. For this game, their first concept was to put it in the world of mobile technology. They had to make sure that the game was designed only for the phone and nowhere else. It will be an RPG, but not in an MMORPG scale. There are 12 (not including the Moogle) characters available for play. You may choose a character to play with and the others will remain as NPCs. As to the games connectivity, the game does encourage multiple player modes, yet they do not particularly explain how. They said that what currently troubles them is whether the commands to be used in the game will be visible or not. They said that a change in mobile technology might help them out a bit, but as of now, they are still currently working their way around the system.

The three games are definitely on a roll but don't expect them to come around the day that the PS3 is slated to be released. The boys reveal to us that they will be revealing more in the next E3, so perhaps we could expect that at least one of the games will be ready for us to enjoy sometime next year. In the meantime, I guess we have just to satisfy ourselves with some screenshotsand trailers.

with Kingdom Hearts II now out in America and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix + on the way to Japan, the question in the minds of Kingdom Hearts fans throughout the world is, what's up with Kingdom Hearts III? Producer Tetsuya Nomura answered that very question in an interview featured in the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation.

"We've already been approached by the Disney side saying that they want us to make it," said the busy producer regarding the next installment in the series. "What I can say at this time is 'We have various ideas, but we're not at the point where we can say that.' Looking at the development schedule, after KHII FM+, the Kingdom Hearts team has Final Fantasy Versus XIII awaiting, so it's physically impossible at the present. I feel that it's not the right time to talk about the future of Kingdom Hearts."

Nomura is currently busy with a number of projects, including the Kingdom Hearts II update, FF Versus XIII, Subarashiki Kono Sekai (DS), Monotone (mobile), Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode (mobile), Crisis Core (PSP) and the Advent Children Blu-ray.

Nomura and Toriyama speak about the two upcoming PS3 blockbusters.

Motomu Toriyama and Tetsuya Nomura are currently working away in Square Enix's Shinjuku office on two of the biggest PS3 titles for the next couple of years: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. While there hasn't been much in the way of new information since both games debuted at this year's E3, Dengeki PS3, a one-time publication released to coincide with the Japanese PS3 launch, managed to score some commentary from the two.

Toriyama, director of FFXIII, commented a bit on the differences between the PS2 and PS3 versions of the game. FFXIII was originally in development for the PS2, but underwent a platform change following May 2005.

There is apparently very little shared between the two versions. The graphical elements that were prepared for the PS2 couldn't be used, explained Toriyama. "The areas that we kept are the Fabula Nova Crystallis world, the pieces of the mythology related to FFXIII, and the character details. On the other hand, the battle and gameplay systems were restarted from scratch when production moved to the PS3."

The development staff also underwent some changes. "During development for the PS2, the staff was centered on the Final Fantasy X-2 team. However, in an effort to work with the new PS3 hardware, many new staff members are now taking part."

Nomura, director and character designer for Versus, discussed the difficulties of working with the new hardware. "The hurdles are greater than they were in the move from the PS1 to the PS2," said Nomura. To deal with the transition, Square Enix has all its programmers gather together to work under FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase on the White Engine that will power Square Enix's next generation titles. "We're probably at the point where we could make a PS3 title. However, we're currently researching how to fully tap the specs."It seems as though we'll have to wait a bit to see anything real time from Versus. "Things like real time footage and specifics on areas like the battle system will come once the White Engine is complete," explained Nomura. "We're currently working hard on the development of [the White Engine], and once it's done, we'll have to research what can be done with it. Of course, we do have an idea of what we'd like to do."

The White Engine, it should be noted, isn't just something being made for Final Fantasy XIII.Square Enix will go through many versions of the White Engine over time, according to Nomura, with different games being developed using different versions of the tools. "It's sort of like FFXIII is there as a target. FF Versus XIII will also use the White Engine, and it will be tuned for FF Versus XIII."

The magazine asked the two creators about their opinions on the Tokyo Game Show. "There were more games running on real hardware that I'd expected," said Toriyama. "We're working hard to get FFXIII playable early as well."

Nomura commented on the titles that caught his eye at the show. "Of course, Metal Gear Solid 4. But personally, I'm excited about Devil May Cry 4. I was surprised that they've already shown something in a working state. Also, maybe Gyakuten Saiban 4?"

And the big question, will these Square Enix power players be buying the PS3? "I'm waiting to purchase a plasma television with a PS3," said Toriyama. "Once you've seen video through HDMI, there's no going back."

An interview with Tetsuya Nomura has been published in the latest issue of Dengeki Playstation in Japan. We're having to rely on online translation so the transcripted portion of the interview we're looking at is extremely hard to make out. Unfortunately nothing new, just more waiting.

Nomura says he prefers to work on one project at a time which is why he is currently focusing on his mobile game, Monotone at this time. He says he isn't forgetting about Versus but just waiting until he has more free time to begin working on it. He also doesn't want to begin working on Versus quite yet because of the high specifications of the PS3. He wants to utilize all the technology the PS3 contains and produce the game that he envisioned which isn't possible at the moment.

about FFXIII :

Lightning's muscles and such make an impression, don't they? She is muscular, but attractive.

Nomura :
In drawing Lightning, the most essential thing was that she is a "cool character." You can't have a cool character without sex appeal.

What kind of "cool" is she?

Nomura :
Serious, and unforgiving, yeah, she is a relentless character, isn't she? Maybe she is harsh on herself too, but she is not the type to coddle people. When she meets other people, she's not the kind who changes according to them, but instead you can see that she is a kind of individualistic person who gives off the image of someone who unswervingly follows the guidelines within herself.

Was that harshness more than was intended in the design?

Nomura :
I was asked to make her strong and beautiful, but when I read the scenario, I thought "Is that all?" They were saying that she is a soldier, and her personality was certainly of one. She is not a "whiner." Actually, before we decided on the type we have for her now, there were a variety of different Lightnings. There were some by other staff members, too, and in the beginning, she didn't have the same image as she does now.

Like what, for example?

Nomura :
She was Asian. The final Lightning is considerably more chiseled. Her eyes are more deeply set in than a typical heroine. Also, her cheekbones are more prominent than other female characters. In these ways, Lightning's design changed considerably. Other things are hidden, so you can't tell, but her legs are lean and her abdominal muscles are defined. Toriyama was particular about her having an athlete's body. However, if the heroine was too "macho," it would be difficult for players to associate emotionally with her, and so, while serving the director's intentions for her, I tried to make her a bit sweet. That intent appears in things like her hairstyle and hair color.

about FF Versus XIII :

Then, about the yet unnamed protagonist of Versus XIII, his outfit is temporary, isn’t it?

Nomura :
We intend to completely redo his design. The concept for him is that his hairstyle will give a different impression when viewed from the front than from the back. From the front, his hair is calm and tame, but from the back, it is quite intense and violent-looking. Because his design is temporary, we’re having him face the back as much as possible, like on the cover. (Haha)

I see. There are a lot of things that are unclear, aren’t there?

Nomura :
The Versus protagonist is not a character with a Squall-like or Cloud-like personality like everyone is thinking now. He is a type that has not been seen in the generations of the series yet. For a long time now, I have wanted to try making a character like him, but I hesitated because he is a type of character that might fall close to “out of bounds.”

Are you really that critical of him!?

Nomura :
Yes. (Haha) There are probably people who dislike his type. Usually, protagonists do not have strong personalities to avoid having the personality interfere with the player’s empathy, and so very distinctive characters are relegated to side-roles, but not this time. He has a bit of an overabundance of p idiosyncrasy. I think that when he speaks, the impression of him will change considerably.

Will his voice be so high that we’re surprised? (haha)

Nomura :
(Haha) The concept for his voice has not yet been finalized. People who thought “That’s great!” to his current impression will probably think “What did they do!?” upon seeing him. So, as much as possible, please try not to hold any preconceptions about him! He is not the least bit a silent, gloomy little boy.

He can show an apathetic face to the world, but is he the type that can adjust and let his guard down?

Nomura :
There is that type in reality, too, and there it depends on whether or not their friends accept them, doesn’t it?

Will this be a story of male camaraderie, similar to Crisis Core?

Nomura :
No, for instance, someone [important] dies, and you must take revenge, well it won’t be a soppy story like that. It will adopt a more general “road movie” (a specific type of journey genre, not a road trip movie. >__>; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_movie) sense. As to why I chose a story about men, well, for example, among school friends, when they go traveling, it’s normal to see any combination of fellows in groups of all one gender. That’s all. We can look back on when we were students, and remember enjoying horsing around with our peers with no particular aim in mind.

And a member of a royal family just happens to be one of their number?

Nomura :
That’s right. They have not banded together for any purpose or destiny. This lot, who are always horsing around find themselves at the heart of the story by chance. I wonder if one was a student, would one feel the story even more familiar? Of course, if one was an adult, they might feel nostalgic and enjoy remembering how they horsed around like that, I think. Talking about girls, for instance. In thinking about how to make it more familiar, it turned out this way. Next time we give information, we will reveal his name. It doesn’t have much to do with anything else, though.

We’re looking forward to it. Will it be a name associated with the weather or the skies, following Cloud, Squall, Tidus, etc.?

Nomura :
I thought “should we stop with the weather names, already?” but the FFXIII team named heirs Lightning, and so Versus XIII will follow suit.

Lightning’s name was quite a surprise, wasn’t it?

Nomura :
Lightning’s name also surprised me, even though I was already familiar with her. If they started to use another name at this late date, I wouldn’t be able to get used to it, though.

Square Talks Dissidia, Summer Event Plans​

Dissidia, FFXIII, Kingdom Hearts, and more discussed.​


You can call Tetsuya Nomura a lot of things, but you can't call him lazy. The Square Enix producer has his hand in almost all the major projects his company's working on right now, from the three announced games set for release under the Final Fantasy XIII label to three new Kingdom Hearts games, the upcoming PSP brawlerFinal Fantasy: Dissidia, and even The 3rd Birthday, a new mobile game set in the world of Parasite Eve. In an interview published inWeekly Famitsu magazine this week, the master of all things four-sided and equilateral joined the rest of Dissidia's main staff to discuss Square's future plans -- and as you'd expect from Nomura, there's a lot of them.

As reported earlier, Dissidia is a new PSP game that pits famous Final Fantasy heroes and villains from past and present against each other in high-action arena battles. As senior director Takeshi Arakawa (who previously worked on The World Ends With You) puts it, the project is a chance for Square Enix's younger staff to get hands-on with Final Fantasy in a way they weren't able to before. "Most of the staff is relatively young, so a lot of them grew up as FF's main audience," Arakawa told Famitsu. "They really care about this project. There's a lot of dedication to getting deep into the heart of these characters, and I think there's enough depth here that everyone's going to be happy." Executive producer and character designer Nomura agrees: "One theme of this project was giving the younger staff a chance to shine. Even if it's not exactly an RPG, I'm glad we were able to give these people who used to be Final Fantasy's target audience a chance to work on a new FF-related project. It's been hard, though! I'm staying fairly hands-off on this project, so even if I have my opinions, I'm leaving it to the rest of the staff."

As planning director Mitsunori Takahashi (who was involved extensively with the first two Kingdom Hearts games) puts it, Dissidia is designed to appeal to two very different audience: casual RPG fans who like FF's vast array of characters and hardcore gamers looking to lose themselves in the game world. "We are definitely concentrating on characterization here; that's one of the core concepts of the battles," Takahashi said. "Basically, I think every player has their own hero character which they like the most, so we made them relatively simple to control so it'll be easier for them to play as whom they like. The villains, on the other hand, are definitely meant for the hardcores. I grew up as part of the FF generation, so I want to respect all the original games as much as I can. That's why I want to get as much material from the original games as possible into [Dissidia]." As Nomura puts it, there's more than enough depth here for anyone to enjoy: "It will take some time to completely power-up a character. If you try to work them all up to max power, I think you'll be playing for a pretty long time."

Dissidia is due for release in Japan before the end of the year, but right now it's only part of must be an extremely packed schedule for Nomura these days. The producer is currently directly involved with no less than eight titles across the PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS and cell-phone platforms -- and while we'll get a chance to see many of them at E3 next month, Japanese gamers won't get their turn until DKS3713, a small private event taking place in Tokyo on the weekend of August 2. "There will be a lot announced," Nomura said. "Since I'm heavily involved in fewer projects now, I won't be announcing anything related to the Japan market at E3. What I announce there will be dealing with the overseas market, so there won't be any new video at that event, either."

The name "DKS3713" comes from the initials of all the games set to be on display in one form or another. Set to be available in playable form are Dissidia, Nintendo DS mystery adventure Sigma Harmonics, DS RPG Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, and its PSP counterpart Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep; other titles, including the assorted FFXIII projects and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete, will be shown in video form only. "As I've said before,Final Fantasy Agito XIII [mobile phones] and Final Fantasy Versus XIII [PS3] are not side-story games; they are all XIII," Nomura noted. "The names are different just to distinguish the projects from each other. We're developing both games with the idea that they are Final Fantasy XIII, so a lot of work's going into the story and setting. XIII itself takes priority right now, though, so the Versus team is helping out with that right now. So we're working on the story, the programmers are building the basic framework, and the designers are drawing a lot of concepts. We're advancing in the areas we're able to advance in."

Except for Dissidia and 358/2 Days (both of which are confirmed 2008 releases in Japan), no firm release dates have been announced for any of Nomura's current projects. Nomura did hint at some brand-new announcements at the August event, however: "I hope people can wait until this [DKS3713] event; I think they'll understand why I haven't been saying too much lately."

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Development Going Slow

He tells us the “graphics and visual team is currently spending absolutely all their time on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete.” Then they have the hardware and programming team working on Fina Fantasy XIII, leaving only a small few working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII at the moment. So development is going pretty slow so far, but don’t expect any cancellations, as it is still being actively pursued.

It came with FFVII ACC disc containing the FFXIII demo and trailers for FF Versus XIII and FF Agito XIII. You can see what the list looks like in this video above, which was shot a few days after the movie's release. The FF Versus XIII trailer on the disc is the trailer now called the 2009 trailer or the trailer for Noctis's Meeting with Stella. Mark58 (his Twitter account @0408mark58) Thanks to him for uploading the 1080p trailer for us on August 9, 2020, and for the first time we watched this trailer in high definition.

Nomura Interview : Focusing on Versus XIII, Final Fantasy XIII at E3


Tetsuya Nomura, famous for his work on Final Fantasy VII and head of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, was interviewed in the latest Famitsu, where we get some project updates on Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII.

First of all, Nomura is not involved much at all in production on Final Fantasy XIII, besides design, voice recording and marketing. This make sense since the game seems to be nearing completion, and more of his time can go into Versus XIII now. He actually says he’s currently focusing on Versus XIII and Agito XIII.

The team working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII consists of more or less the same members of the Final Fantasy VII team
and everyone is working like crazy on the game, ensuring the best quality on the game. They’re currently testing the battle system and map gimmicks as well as town lighting. Nomura says that the day and night for one of the towns made it feel like the town literally existed in front of him.

Nomura says he’s preparing to show us something surprising once the time is right for Versus XIII, but we have to wait a bit longer. However, E3 will bring in new videos and images for Final Fantasy XIII, but Versus XIII will not be present.

As for Final Fantasy Agito XIII, the handheld game has a completely different battle system from the battle scenes seen in the trailer. Nomura’s trying to make it the pinnacle of handheld RPGs.

Nomura : Versus XIII will be at E3 2010 "if we're quick enough"

Speaking in this week's Famitsu, Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura has said that the earliest we're going to see his game is at E3 next June.

"We'll gradually unveil it starting next year, at E3 if we're quick enough," said Nomura.

He also talked about the development video shown at the Tokyo Game Show on the game.

"That wasn't development stuff, but a technical demo reel of sorts. We hurriedly put together a video because we wanted people be assured that Versus is also still under development."

He also confirmed that the gameplay for the game will be similar of that to Kingdom Hearts.

"It will fall close to that category, but we're aiming for a fusion of new features with the classic FF style. We see level design as the most important part of development here, but it'll be a while before we can show any of that."

Jump Festa'10 starts now. Square Enix is on the show floor showing the latest in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. No there’s not any gameplay, but they are showing off Noctis’ apparently new outfit. We say apparent because it’s unsure if he’s actually going to wear it or if it will replace his current costume.

A minute-long teaser for FF Versus XIII for Jump Festa 2010 was shown behind the scenes and we haven't seen it, and it was the first trailer ever to show Noctis in Roen's clothes

andriasing : At Jump, Square Enix had the same system in place, but the order was reversed. Those waiting in line to get into the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep demo area were able to view trailer footage on two large screens. I prefer this method, as due to the wait time, I was able to watch the trailer footage three times!

The line was behind a large Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep screen and could only be accessed by those who had received a ticket handed out earlier in the day, so it had the feel of a privileged closed door session. The doors weren't closed too tightly, though. I'm not sure if Square Enix realized it, but you could sorta see the footage through the screen :

Andriasing : Look closely, and you'll see an image from the new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer. The reel also contained footage of all the expected major Square Enix titles -- Birth by Sleep, Agito XIII, Final Fantasy XIII, and 3rd Birthday. And, of course, the usual warning messages about not taking videos.

Versus XIII was the main attraction, although it was more of a tease than a proper trailer. The footage began with the words "real or fantasy" set against a black background. The "fantasy" lingers for a few seconds as the scene switches to a bright daytime scene of main character Noctis standing on the side of what looks like a highway, leaning against a gate. As a vehicle approaches from the distance, the Versus logo and various bits of latin text flash on the screen. The vehicle stops, and as Noctis gets in, we see brief flashes to past trailers, including an image of heroine Stella in her formal attire. Noctis crosses his legs (this is important -- see below), and the car speeds off into the distance.

The trailer leaves with the phrases "Work in progress" and "Revelation will come next time."


It's just about a minute in length, but there's a lot to take away from the trailer. The car, for instance, is, I believe, the same car that was shown in the early Versus trailers. The car is also driving down a similar highway as depicted in those trailers. The difference here, in addition to the switch to daytime, is that everything is in realtime -- the car's exterior and interior, the roadside, and of course Noctis himself.

You can tell the footage is realtime because the image quality isn't as clean as CG. Aside from that, though, you might not notice the difference. The modeling detail, animation, and particularly the lighting are all first rate.

There's more good news, though! That one minute of footage was all real time, and looked absolutely stunning, with detailed character and environment models, and realistic lightning.

Gematsu : At Jump Festa this year, Square Enix did the unexpected and showed a new gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. This time it was in a mega-theater, rather than a small room with the game recorded on a handy-cam.

The trailer starts on a bright day with Noctis waiting on a highway. He is eventually picked up by a car, which then speeds off. The whole trailer is real-time. Andriasangdescribes it as “stunning, particularly the lighting.” The trailer ends with the phrase, “Revelation will come next time.”

Perhaps a public reveal next time?


New Final Fantasy Versus XIII Teaser Shown

novacrystallis : In an unexpected turn of events, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has turned up at Jump Festa 2010. Featured was a new teaser trailer of sorts completely in real time. The trailer features Noctis standing on a highway and is then picked up by a car. Reports say it looks absolutely amazing, namely the lighting.

The trailer ends with a message: “Revelations will come next time.”

Roen is also showing off a new clothing design for Noctis at the show. It looks very similar to what Nomura described in post TGS Famitsu interviews.

Square: Final Fantasy Versus XIII development “has really picked up” since Final Fantasy XIII

In an interview with Xbox-Mag (via Connected Consoles) regarding Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy XIII, they decide Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama the status of the PlayStation 3 exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

They say that we will have to remain patient a bit longer for more information on the game. Although, development for Final Fantasy Versus XIII has really picked up since we’ve finished Final Fantasy XIII, and many designers and graphic artists are again Project Final Fantasy Versus XIII.”

Sounds like everything is coming along splendidly.

Next Final Fantasy Versus XIII Reveal May Be Delayed Due To World Map Changes

Tetsuya Nomura explained to Famitsu magazine changes being made to the world map might set the schedule back. "For displaying characters on the world map, we were originally planning on using the method used by FF#, with a small Noctis running about on the screen. But that didn’t look too great, so we ended up switching to the method used by FF#," Nomura said to Famitsu, according to a transcript translated by Andriasang. The two "#s" in the quote pertain to Final Fantasy game numbers that Famitsu were asked to edit out of the interview.

“We were hoping to debut it at E3, but we’re not sure now,” said Nomura.

FF Versus XIII might not make E3 2010

Final Fantasy Versus XIII might not make its planned debut appearance at this year's E3, according to producer Testuya Nomura.

"We were hoping to debut it at E3, but we're not sure now," he told Japanese gaming bible Famitsu, reports Andriasang.

Apparently the delay has been caused by Square Enix deciding to revise the action-RPG's world map. "For displaying characters on the world map, we were originally planning on using the method used by FF#, with a small Noctus running about on the screen," Nomura said, Famitsu deciding to obscure which game in the Final Fantasy series he was referring to.

"But that didn't look too great, so we ended up switching to the method used by FF#." FFVII and FFX, maybe?

-- In about two years we'll hit the 10 year anniversary. So how about KH3?

Nomura: No no, that's still a secret (laughs). The title with a connection to the mystery series that I mentioned before will come out first.

-- So will the series be complete with the third part? Are you looking at the whole picture?

Nomura: 'Kingdom Hearts' is Sora's story, but the series we're working on at the moment is the story of one other person. That is to say, it's a series where that person is the focus.

-- The series you're currently working on!?

Nomura: I can't say any more than that (laughs).

FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII World map features airships

Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura has let loose a couple of new details about the upcoming PlayStation 3 action RPG in a recent interview with Square Enix Members Japan.

First off he revealed that the game’s producer Hashimoto isn’t letting him reveal any big new information. Looks like he wants to get it out as much as we want to get it.

Although, he did say that each part of Versus XIII is progressing different and not everything in the game has been connected yet. They recently just got the airship flying over the world map.

Nomura : I like all of the characters I created but Sora is the most special because of the many associations he brought to me.

Wada : Square "looking into" FF Versus XIII for Xbox 360

Speaking at an investor meeting during the release of the company’s financials – which saw big brother Final Fantasy XIII sell over 5-and-a-half million units in its fiscal year ending March 31, 2010 – Wada said the following comment when asked if Versus was jumping ship from PS3, caught by Impress Watch:

“We’ll be looking into it internally until right before the formal announcement.”

Since its reveal at E3 2006, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has remained a PS3 exclusive, even when FFXIII jumped to Xbox 360 at E3 2008.

Director Tetsuya Nomura said last year the game’s formal reveal would most likely be coming at E3 next month, although that may potentially not happen now, according to comments made by him in February.

Don't read too much into Versus XIII 360 comment, says Wada

Calm down, calm down. Everyone return to normal now. Let there be peace again.

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada has clarified what he meant yesterday about comments that the company was internally looking at bringing Final Fantasy Versus XIII to Xbox 360. He’s now said that, for the time being at least, it’s staying as a PS3 exclusive.

“It looks like the ‘net is heating up. Versus on Xbox?,” Wada tweeted. “What I said at the earnings press conference was just that until a formal announcement is made at the announcement time, all points about all titles are not finalized.”

So for now, don’t expect the internet to break come the second week of June. That said, just in case, don’t take a single eye off Mattrick on June 14 when Microsoft’s E3 presser takes place. Don’t even blink, just in case Wadataps that shoulder again, like with FFXIII.

Tetsuya Nomura Making An Appearance At E3

Twitter addict Shinji Hashimoto is leaking Square Enix’s E3 plans, apparently. He just tweeted that Tetsuya Nomura, Director of the Kingdom Hearts series, is traveling to E3.

“Next week, after a long time, Director Nomura will go on a business trip to E3,” Hashimoto announced.

Hashimoto also mentioned a business meetingfor a new project with Director Nomura in their Osaka studio. The Osaka branch recently finished work on Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, which is coming to North America with new features.

New Kingdom Hearts title to be revealed at E3, says Nomura

Speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer, he said it’ll be one of two titles announced this year in the series.

One of them must be Kingdom Hearts III, yes? Nope: Nomura said that as far as he’s concerned, he’s never formally revealed its existence. To make sure, he used the term “two titles other then III”.

As for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Nomura, who is directing the title, says development is going smoothly. He says, however, it will take its development “one step at a time”.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Has An Open Field With Roaming Monsters

Clips from an interview with Tetsuya Nomura reveal Final Fantasy Versus XIII has an open world. Players will be able to explore it by using a car, which they can ride at any time.

Siliconera : Monsters walk around on the field and sometimes the will pop up if you are just hanging around. Another bullet point reads, “battles are basically seamless.” Aside from load times when changing areas, the world is seamless too.

Another report on the interview says their are destructible objects and a fight scene modeled off a gas station in Shinjuku.

We’re searching for scans of the interview to double check the facts and to see those new Behemoth fight screenshots.

Tetsuya Nomura confirmed FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII will Appear at TGS 2010


the highly anticipated exclusive would indeed be appearing at Japan’s biggest gaming event!! We discovered via Siliconera that Tetsuya Nomura confirmed the game’s showing by way of his Twitter account.

Apparently, both Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will be shown together in one single, short promotional video. Other games confirmed to appear include Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded and The 3rd Birthday. We’ll have more on all these titles when they’re shown next month at the Tokyo Game Show.

Tabata Tweets About FF Agito XIII, The 3rd Birthday and FF Versus XIII

Hajime Tabata provided a bunch of notable updates today at The 3rd Birthday Twitter. Tabata is director of both The 3rd Birthday and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and he shared some insights into both titles' Tokyo Game Show showings as well as their general development, and even managed to work in an intriguing tease about Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

The 3rd Birthday's official site was updated earlier in the day with details on two new members of main character Aya Brea's CTI group (for a recap of the update, see this story). According to Tabata, there's a connection of some form between CTI and the first two Parasite Eve games. This is something that will be touched upon in The 3rd Birthday.

As previously announced, The 3rd Birthday will appear at Tokyo Game Show in playable and movie form. Tabata shared some comments on the game's promotional video, describing it as "dramatic" and "sharp." Internal staffers having seen the trailer said "This game looks totally interesting," which Tabata said is a statement not typical of a game developer. He actually felt the same way upon seeing the PV. (I believe the trailer is being edited by Tetsuya Nomura).

Agito will appear at TGS as well, although only in PV form. This trailer, Tabata said, is extremely short, but he feels frame by frame it's well done.

Tabata provided a few intriguing comments on Agito's development. While the game's event scenes are still a ways off, the real time component is coming along. The design staff has apparently been saying that the things they're aiming for are impossible on PSP. "At present, midway through development, we've arrived at a point of astonishment on PSP."

Don't expect Agito anytime soon, at least not until after The 3rd Birthday. "After 3rd is complete, we'll bring in the 3rd team and enter into a completion phase for Agito. In other words, we still need time. As Tetsuya (Nomura) said, there are unannounced titles coming before Agito. Wait just a bit more for information to be released."

Nomura has mentioned in past Tweets that he will have an unannounced title of some form at TGS, so perhaps Tabata's "just a bit more" means "just a few more weeks."

Among the staff that will be moving over to Agito are the people who are working on The 3rd Birthday's event scenes. This staff was initially formed for Crisis Core. They're working on The 3rd Birthday now and will also be heading up event scenes for Agito. Tabata described the team as capable of bringing meaning to each scene, which is why he's worked with them for so long.

Separate from the event staff, The 3rd Birthday and Agito both have the high end CG sequences one expects of a Square Enix game. These are being handled, as usual, by the company's Visual Works studio. Wrote Tabata, "Whenever I go to the VW studio floor, there's video and demos of such tremendous quality on the monitors that I'm full of tension and excitement and want to stay for a long time."

Tabata brought up Final Fantasy Versus XIII in his next Tweet: "On that note, Versus. That scene in the PV. I think it will make you shake."

Tetsuya Nomura decided out of nowhere today to Tweet about Final Fantasy Versus XIII and multiplatform development.

Wrote the Versus XIII director at The 3rd Birthday Twitter: "Multiplatform is when you start development on a game with the assumption of optimizing for multiple platforms. Porting is something that's done after you've developed a game specifically for a particular platforms. The debate over porting is decided by the management based off the current market and the costs. All I can say right now as a developer is that Versus is being developed specifically for the PlayStation 3."

This comment comes a day after reports surfaced about Final Fantasy XIII's Xbox 360 version being released in Japan. While the news has yet to be confirmed, Microsoft is scheduled to hold one of its seasonal press conferences later today, so we'll know shortly if it's true or not.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Footage Shown in Square Enix TGS Theater

TOKYO – Square Enix showed new footage of the long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII spinoffs in its closed theater on the Tokyo Game Show floor this weekend.

Announced in 2006 alongside the main game, the PSP game Final Fantasy Agito XIII (pictured) and the PlayStation 3 title Final Fantasy Versus XIII have not been shown in playable form in the ensuing four and a half years. Both are action role-playing games.

The games' presence at this year's Tokyo Game Show was limited to trailers that were not shown in public. As usual with Square Enix's trade show booths, a curtained-off area played 20 minutes' worth of trailers every half hour throughout the day to groups of attendees, also featuring new footage of other upcoming titles like Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded and Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy. Photography was strictly prohibited.

Although the trailers for Agito and Versus did not list release dates for either game, the presentation closed with a news announcement: A conference about the Final Fantasy XIII game series will be held in Japan on January 11, 2011. This is when we should get some solid details about when these games will actually be released.

A full report on what games were shown in the closed theater follows.

1. Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded – Playable on the show floor, this is a Nintendo DS remake of the mobile Kingdom Hearts game using the engine from the last DS game. The trailer showed off the avatar creation mode, in which users can create their own cutesy Kingdom Hearts avatars and use them in the game's network mode. Available October 7 in Japan.

2. Kingdom Hearts Mobile – Hey, did you know there's a Kingdom Hearts mobile app? They only show footage of it every year. It's been out forever!

3. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix – A version of the PSP game with English voices and other minor tweaks. Available January 11 in Japan.

4. The 3rd Birthday – PSP sequel to Parasite Eve, a third-person shooter with a whole lot of storyline. December 22 in Japan.

5. Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy – The sequel to the Final Fantasy fighting game for the PSP. New characters include Lightning from XIII, Kain from IV and Tifa from VII. Out in spring 2011 in Japan.

6. Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII – Here's the big one. These two trailers were grouped together under the umbrella name for the XIII series. Agito's looking quite the same as it always has – it's a melee-focused action RPG for PSP, with screens full of great big monsters to battle. The best part was the footage of the characters riding around on a world map with Chocobos.

Finally, very small bits of Final Fantasy Versus XIII's gameplay were shown. We first saw the main character running around a destroyed modern world – two-lane highways cracked in half, a burned-out gas station – with no one else around him. After an all-too-brief glimpse of that, we saw an action sequence with him slashing a massive Behemoth.


I have to be careful about reading too much into a few snippets of gameplay footage of unknown provenance, but Versus is a good-looking game. I'm interested to finally see what it's like, hopefully at this January conference.

Tetsuya Nomura Discusses Kingdom Hearts III

With its prequels and side stories, the Kingdom Hearts franchise has kept followers of the series engaged for years. Fans have anticipated the next big title in the franchise for some time: Kingdom Hearts III (KH III) . In a recent interview, Tetsuya Nomura discusses life, his full schedule of projects, and notably what his plans are for KH III.

Nomura-san commented on the current challenges he faces developing KH III:

“For any sequel of the mainstream storyline of the Kingdom Hearts series, that would be Kingdom Hearts III”
He added:

“But the problem is that the opportunity of developing the sequel is not currently [possible]. The team is busy, I am busy.”
Even with his busy schedule, KH III is still something he wants to do and is preparing for. Nomura-san had this to say about his thoughts on the next chapter in the storyline:

I’m thinking about what’s going to be next after Kingdom Hearts II, the future that is Kingdom Hearts III. Time has nearly come to [work on] that concept.
With the game’s concept phase being in sight, it leads to the question: When can we expect it? When asked if we would see it on the current generation of consoles, he gave this revelation:

Yes it might be possible. It is my desire to develop the next Kingdom Hearts on the existing platform, but the problem with a new console is that it has new technical requirements… So, yes, I’m willing to create something on the existing console because when we aim for another non-existing future console, the release of the title will be far in the future. That’s my concern.

Nomura-san is a busy man, even stating he had to “sacrifice my private time, my marriage, my family time” to stay on top of all his current projects. At least KH III is one of those projects. No matter how long it takes, it will be worth the wait.

Square Enix producer, Hajime Tabata has expressed desire to release a Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII remake on 3DS and plans to move to an HD project

The mobile game Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VIIwas the first part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII to be released in Japan, but never made it to North America. That would almost certainly change if the game were ported to the Nintendo 3DS, something which Square Enix's Hajime Tabata mused about on Twitter.

"If I were to make something for 3DS, I suppose it would be a remake of Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII," he said (translated by Andriasang. "I'd redo the scenario structure and game design for the 3DS. I think I'd like to make an action RPG BCFF7 where a large number of Turks players play simultaneously."

Sounds awesome, right? Well, it's not happening, at least not right now. Tabata lamented that he was already far too busy on The 3rd Birthday, and plans to move to an HD project afterward as a change of pace from all the portable games.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailer Contains Mix of Real Time and Pre-rendered Footage

In the new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer, this opening sequence of Noctis on the highway is pre-rendred, but everything else is real time.

It seems that there's been a bit of debate about what areas of the Tokyo Game Show Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer are real time and what's pre-rendered. Tetsuya Nomura has responded via Twitter.

The opening sequence of the Versus trailer which shows a close-up of main character Noctis is part of a pre-rendered movie, said Nomura. Everything else is real time footage of the game being actually controlled.

Regarding the sequences showing Noctis running about, Nomura said that you can traverse these areas on foot as shown in the trailer, but he believes most people will opt for transportation via car.

Regarding the ending battle sequence with the giant behemoth, Nomura said that they slowed the speed down just a bit from the real thing. The reason for this is that Noctis' speed is actually so fast that you can't see him clearly.

In an earlier post, Nomura explained the reasoning behind putting the trailers on the login-protected Members site. This was done only because the Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Agito XIII official sites are not yet ready, and the fastest way to get them up would be to go through the Members site.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII director Hajime Tabata commented on the Agito trailer which precedes the Versus trailer. Wrote Tabata, "The main characters' actions, Golem and Ifrit coming down to the battle field, smashing enemy soldiers with blizzard. The details are a secret, but they're all important elements for Agito. The area where the Chocobo is running is the world map."

As usual for these Twitter updates, I have no idea when Nomura is going to stop making posts, so I'll be adding translations of new posts (if there are any) to this story via comments section. Square Enix Seeking Final Fantasy Versus XIII Planners

Andriasang : Help them finish making Versus. Please help them finish making Versus!

Square Enix seems to be serious about this whole Final Fantasy Versus XIII thing. In fact, to speed up completion of the project, they're taking the extraordinary measure of actually hiring new staff.

The notice says that Square Enix is seeking a large number of planners for Versus XIII. There are two specific listings: battle planner and level design planner.

Battle planner requires such work as creation of enemy characters for an action RPG, "creation of the battle concept for each chapter, field and dungeon," formation of "enemy character algorithms, parameter settings and other data work," and management of graphics resources. This position asks for people with experience making PS3 and Xbox 360 package games and those with knowledge of battles and level creation.

Level design planner requires such work as "development of action games" and "creation of level design based off the scenario." This position requires that candidates have experience making action games.

Both jobs are out of Square Enix's Shinjuku studio.

This is based on the video debuted at Square Enix 1st Production Department Permiere event on January 18, 2011. Since then, the video has been uploaded on the internet, but Square Enix has summarily taken it down



This is a translation of the mythological story told in this Fabula Nova Crystallis video shown at the January 18th 2011 Square-Enix Conference.

Once upon a time, a god ruled the world. He was called Buniberzei.

Buniberzei defeated his mother, the goddess Muin, and took control of the world for himself.

Muin disappeared into the unseen world--the invisible world.

Buniberzei was a god with many troubles.

The world, it was certain, was destined to die.

He believed this was a curse laid on the world by his mother Muin. Buniberzei knew he had to destroy her.

To do this, he must search for the door. The door to the invisible world where his mother waited.

Using his will alone, he created the first fal’Cie.

First, he created fal’Cie Pulse.

The duty he laid on him was to open the world, and search for the door to Muin.

Next, he created fal’Cie Etro.

But it was a mistake. Unknowingly, he created her exactly in the image of Muin.

Buniberzei feared her, and gave Etro no power of her own.

Instead, he created fal’Cie Lindzei.

The duty he laid on him was to protect Buniberzei from all who might seek to destroy him.

Buniberzei gave Lindzei one special duty. To wake him once the time came.

Then he turned to crystal, and fell into an endless sleep.

Pulse wished to expand the world, so he created many fal’Cie and l’Cie.

Lindzai wished to protect the world, so he created many fal’Cie and l’Cie.

But Etro was powerless, and could do nothing of her own.

Lonely, she thought of her mother, who she so resembled.

Etro tore at her body, letting her blood flow to the earth, and disappeared from the visible world.

From that blood, torn from her body, sprung humankind.

Creatures that were born, only to die.

The destruction of the visible world was no curse, only fate.

The world was divided into two halves, the visible and the invisible.

If the balance between these two were destroyed, the world itself would be destroyed.

The goddess Muin could do nothing to stop this fate.

She was being swallowed into the chaos of the invisible world.

Just before her last moment, Etro came to her side.

Muin told Etro that she must protect the balance of the world, before slipping into the chaos forever.

But Etro was foolish, and didn’t know the meaning behind Muin’s words.

Etro was lonely, but she felt affection for those humans who live only to die.

As they died, she smiled, and gave them chaos.

The chaos Etro gave them, the humans named “heart”.

Their hearts would become their power, but the humans did not yet know this.

Soon, they called Pulse the all powerful ruler. Lindzei they named their protector, and Etro... Etro the named ‘death’.

The humans lived on the world, hold chaos inside them.

Because they held chaos so close, the world once again was in balance.

And Buniberzei still sleeps. A crystal.

Until the end of forever...

FF Versus XIII Director shares lots of new details on Final Fantasy XIII sister project in Famitsu interview.

Noctis and Final Fantasy Versus XIII finally showed their true form in a trailer at Square Enix's 1st Production Department Premier event two weeks back. Now Tetsuya Nomura has filled in the details.

andraisng : You've seen the recent Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer. Now get some details on what you should be looking for straight from director Tetsuya Nomura himself.

Famitsu.com has posted a complete version of a Nomura interview that appeared in Weekly Famitsu last week. Nomura shared lots of intriguing new details on the long awaited Final Fantasy XIII sister project.

■ STORY AND CHARACTERS ■

The 1st Production Department Premier event trailer, which offered us our first true look at Versus XIII gameplay (ignoring the few seconds from the game's brief Tokyo Game Show trailer) was almost all in-game. The opening section, which showed Noctis and his driver driving down a freeway was CG (not live action footage, Famitsu confirmed), but everything from the conversation scene between Noctis and Stella was real time running on the PlayStation 3. This includes the flyby scene with the masses of buildings that precedes the combat part of the clip.

o(Nomura didn't say this, but the end of the clip does appear to have a short CG sequence.)o

The trailer, Famitsu noted, allows us to better get a grasp of the characters, as we get to first hear Noctis, and his allies. Furthermore, the ally clothing has been redone.

These areas appear to be final designs, although Nomura said that he's playing around with the hair a bit. Even the voices that you hear for the allies during the combat scenes is from final voice actors, chosen via auditions.

Regarding the voice actors, Nomura wouldn't confirm who they are, but he said some fans appear to have figured it out.

Nomura detailed a few of the character and story elements that were hinted at in the trailer.

Ignis, the ally with glasses and the only party member outside of Noctis whose name has been confirmed, was raised from childhood to be something akin to Noctis' military tactician. This is why his lines in the trailer sound like he's counseling Noctis. For the trailer, they selected scenes that would make the relationship between Noctis and Ignis clear.

As detailed in our summary of Dengeki's interview from last week (read it here!), Ignis and the scar-faced party member are childhood friends of Noctis. The blonde party member is a relatively new friend.

The story of Final Fantasy Versus XIII has the enemy kingdom of Niflheim invading Noctis' country, beginning an "escape drama" for Noctis and his friends. However, Noctis thinks of himself not as fleeing but as pursuing the enemy.

In the trailer, there's a scene (at the 2:09 mark) where we see Noctics' father, the king, saying to someone that he won't give up the throne and will be the final king. This dialogue is taken directly from the game, but it's actually used in a different scene. The identity of who the king is speaking to is a secret (it's not Noctis, as some thought at first).o

Nomura also said that the throne the king is shown sitting in during that scene is different from the throne we see Noctis sitting in at the end of the trailer (around the 6:12 mark).o

During the trailer, there's a scene (at the 4:30 mark) set in a forest clearing in the evening showing someone walking towards the king. This scene looks like it's in first person. According to Nomura, this is an event scene that the player can control. The viewpoint is low because it's a scene from Noctis' youth.

Towards the end of the trailer (around the 6:00 mark) there's a scene showing Noctis' father in a standoff with a character in white robes. Famitsu noted that in a previous trailer, Noctis was seen in a standoff with a man in white robes. The two white robed men are different, Nomura said.

Both confrontations take place in the castle, but in different locations within the castle. The inside castle is being made large, said Nomura, and players will be able to move their character around in it.

Famitsu asked just one questions about the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology. Will the l'Cie, who were depicted in Final Fantasy XIII as humans given the power to use magic and summons in exchange for being burdened with a mission, appear in Versus XIII? Nomura confirmed that as Versus XIII is based off the same mythology as FFXIII, the term l'Cie and other such terms will appear. However, going along with the modern look of the world, the language used in the conversation will also be modern. He didn't explain what this means precisely in terms of the use of the phrases.

■ BATTLE SYSTEM ■

Moving on to the battle system, Famitsu noted that the movement in the battle scenes looked faster than in the brief Tokyo Game Show trailer. As Nomura said in post-TGS Twitter updates, the TGS footage was actually slowed down to make it easier to see the motions. What we're seeing in the new trailer is the real deal as far as speed goes.

During combat, you an do all sorts of actions, like double jumps and so-forth. All the characters move with great speed.

Asked if the battle system is similar to Kingdom Hearts in that characters perform actions once you've selected commands, Nomura responded that it's close to that.

The icons and gauges we see in the battle scenes appear to be a mix of finalized and temporary. The commands are temporary (I'm not sure if Nomura is speaking about the names of the commands or just the way they're displayed). The gauges for HP and so-forth are final. They deleted the character names from the gauges shown in the lower right. All the screenshots you see of the game in magazines and at Famitsu.com also have the named removed.

There's an orange gauge to the right of the HP gauge. This is part of an original system for the game. Nomura did not elaborate.

The character faces above the HP and orange gauges are meant to be a window showing a closeup of the character's faces as they fight. This way, even if you're separated from a character, you can tell when he's having trouble.

One of the commands shown in the command palette is "SUMMON." Nomura confirmed that there will be summon elements in the game. As he's said in past interviews, he also confirmed that you'll be able to ride Magitek Armor mecha and Chocobos. He said we can think that all the familiar elements from the Final Fantasy series will be in the game.

Regarding magic, however, there's one major story-based consideration. All characters can use magic, but Noctis must be there. As part of the story setting, magic can be used because Noctis is there.

With this connection to Noctis, it does seem that magic will be tied closely to the story. But not in one way some might have speculated from past trailers. One of the earliest realtime scenes from the game (also shown in the latest trailer) showed Noctis and Stella speaking about the goddess Etro during a scene in the trailer (see details about the Fabula Nova Crystalls mythology here). They mention something about sharing the ability to see a certain "light." This power of light is different from the power of magic, said Nomura.

Versus XIII will have a job system -- but not for your player-controlled characters. Enemies come in such flavors as dragon knights and summoners. The dragon knight character seen doing some wild acrobatics through the air towards the end of the trailer (around the 5:43 mark) is a character from the enemy side (she's not Stella, as Nomura said in past interviews). She's part of a special group of people within the enemy army, and uses unconventional armor that differs from the army's standard issue.

As shown in the trailer, your party can have up to three members. The party members will initially be chosen for you as part of the story, in part because of tutorial considerations. As you advance in the game, you'll gain the ability to select your members. Howevr, Noctis is always a part of your party. In the Dengeki interview, Nomura said that if Noctis dies the game ends.

You're free to switch off between the three party members during battle. But this switching isn't necessary. You can play the game exclusively as Noctis if you like.

Each character has their own specialties, and they attack differently depending on the weapon. Nomura said that he wants players to discover their own strategy, as far as timing and situation goes, for switching between characters.

Noctis has access to a variety of weapons, like swords, axes, lances and guns. Looking at guns alone, you'll find such varieties as hand guns, machine guns, shot guns, rifles, bazookas and more. One area the development staff is placing a focus on is making the motions for when you use the various weapons look different.

Different from Noctis, the various party members outside will be able to use only certain weapons. Here's what the party members shown in the trailer can do :

Ignis
Specializes in support-style attacks. He's particularly strong with magic, but can also use throwable knives and other such weapons. The trailer also shows him wielding a katana blade.

Scarfaced Character
He'll fight bare handed and will also use large weapons like pile bunkers and broad swords.

Blonde Character
He's a gunner. Noctis can also also use guns of course, but when he does so he fires with auto aim. The blonde character, on the other hand, will display a targeting reticule, allowing you to aim for enemy weak points.

The blonde guys's aiming is particularly useful for larger monsters, who have weak points in various areas and can be targeted for positional damage.

Switching between weapons is part of the base action gameplay. For Noctis, you can go into the menu to set him with multiple weapons. These will automatically switch out as you fight. Depending on the weapons you've set, you'll get various combos.

One thing Versus XIII won't have is team-up attacks that has the three party members automatically group together for a super attack. However, Nomura noted that players can time their character switches to chain together multi-character attacks on their own. This can apparently be seen in the trailer, although Nomura said that most players probably might have not noticed it as it's super quick. Examples of using this system involve having Ignis use magic to send the enemy flying back, then switching out instantly to have another character come in for an attack.

■ FIELDS AND WORLDS ■

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will have a lot of freedom, Nomura noted. They're working on adding a variety of gimmicks. By "gimmick," Nomura means such things as how in the trailer we see a behemoth creature running to destroy an overhead walkway as Noctis crosses it (around the 4:25 mark, but the behemoth battle starts before this). If you don't make Noctis cross the bridge, the behemoth will not destroy it. These types of gimmicks are tough on the development side of things, noted Nomura.

Those behemoth beasts will be of different size depending on the situation. In the trailer scene, they made the creature big because the fight takes place amongst tall buildings and there wouldn't be as much impact if it was small. In the wild, the behemoths will be a bit smaller.

The city scene where Noctis is facing off against the behemoth is full of destroyable objects -- for instance, the trees and electricity poles. There's also a lot of interactivity, it seems. Following the sequence shown in the trailer, you'll end up fighting a behemoth on a three level freeway area. The road has been damaged, so you'll need to move around by jumping and so-forth. You can also make use of the buildings that line the road. The emergency stairwells of the buildings can can be entered and climbed to get to the roof, with Noctis pulling himself up to the very top via the air conditioner. Nomura was actually surprised to find this area when test playing the game.

With all the freedom, Nomura expects players to not be able to experience everything in one go.

The trailer shows just a section of the game's starting country -- that is, the kingdom ruled by Noctis' father. There are also other large kingdoms, and in between them you'll find villages. Even the villages are expansive. Nomura was once again surprised by the size when checking the game.

As indicated in the trailer, the fields have a day-night cycle. You'll encounter different beasts at different times of day. They sped up some of the time progression in the trailer to make it more easily seen.

OUR NEXT LOOK AT FF VERSUS XIII

Closing off the interview, Nomura hinted that there's still a lot that we haven't seen from Versus XIII. There will be character growth systems and other exclusive systems in the game, none of which is visible in the trailer.

The next time we can expect to see more of Versus XIII is at E3, which takes place June 7 to 9 in Los Angeles. However, an E3 showing has yet to be finalized, Nomura said.

Siliconera’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 Interview With Toriyama And Kitase

How did the reception of Final Fantasy XIII affect the sequel? Did you incorporate any fan feedback into Final Fantasy XIII-2?

We made Final Fantasy XIII with the concept of a story driven game. So much so, some gamers were not very happy with it and criticized XIII and said the game progression was too linear and the world could be more populated. With Final Fantasy XIII-2, we wanted to present a completely different experience with this game. There is more exploration and elements in the environment to interact with.

For the new hardware, PlayStation Vita and Wii U, are you planning on working on anyFinal Fantasy titles for those platforms?

For now we are focusing on the three titles to come – Final Fantasy XIII-2, Type-0, and Versus. While we have no plans at the moment, we’re going to come to a point when we have to decide how we’re going to do our best with these new consoles.

Control Every Cutscene In Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Famitsu has a few details on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Remember Final Fantasy XIII-2‘s live sequences where you can move during a cutscene? Final Fantasy Versus XIII is going one step further and will let players control characters in every cutscene in the game. Tetsuya Nomura says it was important for players to never feel like they have to stop playing.

The event scenes, according to Famitsu, are the same quality as pre-rendered movies, but they are rendered in real time. Nomura attributes this to little difference between the high quality and low quality models. The exception is hair, which is more detailed in high quality models. Nomura says events will be tied to a new system, which Nomura believes has never been done before. He did not give any details to Famitsu.

Events will flow naturally in Final Fantasy Versus XIII and not feel like a game as seen in his other titles. The conversation tempo is different from Final Fantasy, but don’t misunderstand, Nomura says, the game is not like Final Fantasy Type-0 or the Kingdom Hearts series either. Battles in Final Fantasy Versus XIII can change depending on a player’s action.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII presented new challenges for the development team. Because of this the core members have been leading the game, but Square Enix is getting ready to put the game in mass production. Bit by bit they have been recording voices, but there haven’t been many female characters in the scenes so far. To make the conversations feel more realistic they would have four guys record lines in a room together so their dialogue would overlap.

Nomura did not give a date for the next Final Fantasy Versus XIII reveal, but said he has a timeframe in mind.

Update : A summary at FF-Reunion has further details. Nomura brought screenshots of the game to show the reports. One reporter couldn’t believe the graphics were in realtime. Nomura attributed the graphics to their pre-rendered know how and lighting effects. It’s unclear, but it sounds like someone commented that the graphics are like photos. Nomura added that Noctis has a smartphone, which he can use to take photos.

Nomura said we would have to wait until they publically release the images, but we have details on the screenshots. One scene showed a street that looked like Italy with a beige wall with Noctis looking up at a behemoth in the center. Another screenshot showed Noctis standing in a highway road in the afternoon. The same screenshot was shown in the evening with a street sign that reads Meguro.

Famitsu Weekly Nomura Interview on KH3D, Theatrhythm FF, and FF Versus XIII

Influenced by Final Fantasy Versus XIII !?

—In December of last year, the 8 minute long trailer was released. Along with that and the other information being announced, it seems you are gearing towards the release date?

Nomura: Partly because it’s a title we’ve been working on for a few years and the release date for KH3D is after the New Year, we had to deal with refraining from exposing too much. This time the trailer had parts that were withheld up until now; we tried to make the contents of it attention grabbing. The phrase displayed at the beginning of the trailer, “Darkness becomes light, light falls into darkness” becomes the catch copy of this title.

I’d like to ask about the contents of the trailer. It seems Sora and Riku awaken in Traverse Town simultaneously?

Nomura: What about that? (Laughs.) Incidentally, the screen of the trailer is split to show both parts. In actuality, the event scenes won’t necessarily be composed in that way.

—In Traverse Town, Neku and other characters from The World Ends With You appear, but besides them, where are the Reapers?

Nomura: The Reapers aren’t there, just the Players, however there is a reason they are in that town.

—The conversations that Sora and Riku have with TWEWY characters are quite comical, like Shiki being harsh to Riku.

Nomura: For Sora and Riku who have grown up on the island, Neku and his friends who grew up in a modern city contrast quite a bit. Since I’ve been writing the scenarios for Final Fantasy Versus XIII concurrently as I work on KH3D, maybe some of that has had an influence.

—It has a very youthful tone, huh?

Nomura: The personalities of the Versus characters and their situations are so serious, to the point that I can’t stand it so I need a break from the constant serious conversations. (Laughs.)

—It looks like Neku and co. teach Sora how to handle the Dream Eaters.

Nomura: That’s the case. It’s because this is the first world they visit.

—Other worlds shown in the trailer included Pinocchio and Tron: Legacy.

Nomura: In Pinocchio’s world, there are new areas like the circus tents and other places from the original work introduced. Here Sora explores before Pinocchio is swallowed by Monstro, but after they are swallowed is when Riku’s side of the adventure takes place. I’ll tell you more details about Tron’s world in a later update, so please look forward to it.

—It looks like there will be a shooting type mini game where the characters scroll into the center of the screen this time.

Nomura: That’s the part we call “Dive”. In order to go to the next world, they “fall” into the dream of the next world. It sort of replaces the Gummi Ship sequence of the past games.

The truth about Lea’s appearance in the trailer!

—The scene where King Mickey confronts Maleficent caught our attention. At what time period does that scene occur?

Nomura: It occurs after Re:Coded, during the KH3D period. Since King Mickey is in possession of the “Data Worlds”, Maleficent is demanding that he hand them over. This scene occurs in between intervals of Sora and Riku’s adventure.

—Sora and Riku set out to free the “hearts of pure light” and “seven keyholes of sleep” that Maleficent speaks of. Is their a connection between these two things?

Nomura: You’ll see when you play it, so please look forward to that. (Laughs.) The connections of the various mysteries and truths are what it builds up to.

—Well, can you tell us about “Lea” who interrupts the confrontation between the King and Maleficent?

Nomura: That’s Axel as he has returned to being human. In the same place are Zexion and Lexaeus too, they have also returned to being human.

—Do they have their memories of being Nobodies?

Nomura: They do.

—So their Heartless, you’re saying they were defeated somewhere along the line?

Nomura: Well Sora has defeated many Heartless before now, hasn’t he? To say that they returned to being human, their Heartless was probably included among those, huh? (Laughs.) Even when Sora became a Heartless, he was a normal Shadow type. The details of their Heartless aren’t really that important.

—I see. By the way, it seems Xigbar or any of the others were not present in that place…?

Nomura: In that scene, those guys had just been revived as humans. It’s not shown in the trailer, but there are other Members there, they have a conversation about what happened to the Members who are not there. They are in the place where they originally disappeared… In other words, they were revived in the place where they lost their hearts; everyone should be in the research lab. However there are Members who don’t appear there for some reason.

—After their conversation, Axel says he is leaving to search for something.

Nomura: That’s right.

—Will KH3D’s story be concerned with Organization XIII at all?

Nomura: Concerning Organization XIII, the secrets about what specific Members were up to during certain time periods will be revealed.

On the bottom screen of the opening…

—Axel and Roxas among other characters from the past titles appear in very impressive movie that displayed familiar scenes in a spectacular manner.

Nomura: That will be the opening movie of this title. Just like with a number of titles, Visual Works was used to render that movie.

—When Roxas lands as well as in other parts, it looks as if paper swirls and is dispersed. What is the relevance of that?

Nomura: During the KH3D opening, a 2D animation is streamed on the bottom screen. It’s a cel animation, the silhouette of Mickey moves so smoothly it may look like CG. (Laughs.) In it, Mickey takes on the appearance of the Sorcerer’s apprentice. While the movie streaming on the top screen is occurring, it influences the Mickey on the bottom screen. Still on the bottom screen sheet music swirls and disperses in pieces that are used to direct back to the upper screen.

—It seems Mickey will be appearing as the Sorcerer’s apprentice in the Fantasia world.

Nomura: I’ve wanted to have a stage based on Fantasia for a while. In the early stages of planning with Co. Director Yasue, he suggested that if I were to use Fantasia, I needed to split the numerous stories told in that one work in a way that applied to Sora and Riku’s adventure so that is the way it was implemented.

—In KH3D, it seems not only in Fantasia, but in the Three Musketeers world as well Mickey appears in a form that hasn’t met Sora yet.

Nomura: Those worlds are set during a time Mickey was in the pursuit of knowledge, like “in a dream of the world of the past”.

—In Fantasia as well as other worlds, a golden eyed person wearing a black coat appears, who is he?

Nomura: He is the mysterious man who appeared in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix as a boss who manipulated time. Just who he is will be told in KH3D. Everywhere he goes, a few people of the darkness turn up, like how Vanitas came out in the trailer.

Various abilities to use in battle!

—I was able to try the demo, and I found that the sudden character swapping was quite interesting. Since you are suddenly thrown into a different situation, there is a high level of tension in the gameplay.

Nomura: Now you are able to switch between Sora and RIku at will, but at first you weren’t able to switch at your own discretion. Since it was switching in such an irrational form, it was unpopular with us too. (Wry smile.) When you switch, you can prepare the next character you play by applying earned bonuses which is a benefit, so you can still enjoy it while dealing with the tension.

—In the demo, regardless of who defeated the boss, whether it was Riku or Sora, the level would complete, but would that character be the only one who advanced in the storyline?

Nomura: No, that’s not how it works. If one of them advanced too far, then they would be limited to a point where they could no longer progress.

—As for the exploring part, I felt that the judgment of the Free Flow Action ability was quite severe…

Nomura: It is still under adjustments even now. By only changing its judgment a little, the Free Flow Action often surpasses the intended direction or action, so it’s being repeatedly debugged and regulated.

—Has the Reality Shift technique of each world been decided upon?

Nomura: That’s right. Basically, it’s different in each world and in the same world how you use it and its effectiveness varies. The Reality Shift introduced last time in the Three Musketeers world was implemented to resemble the comic strip style of the original work.

—The Dream Eaters seem to take on different personality traits, like “wise” or “narcissistic”. Are they influencing anything in some way?

Nomura: It’s a component of their upbringing. Not only are their different kinds of Dream Eaters, but depending on the individual as well their characteristics are varying. Since we decided from the beginning that KH3D would have an upbringing system introduced, we were excited to do something with emotion and attachment. Also, in this way Sora and Riku do not become strong on their own, but when they release the abilities of their Dream Eaters, they become even more strengthened. Being able to release abilities like that is a similar system to that of Re:Coded.

The Ending of KH3D

—So will KH3D will be equipped with a system that utilizes wireless transmissions?

Nomura: There is a mini game where you can compete against other player’s Dream Eaters via ad-hoc wireless to upgrade your Dream Eaters. These competitions occur differently than normal battles. It’s a system that we’ve wanted to try before.

—The expectations are rising for fans who want to know the release date and whether or not there will be a special edition release.

Nomura: Please wait just a little while longer for a formal announcement.

—Will the ending of this title also be a heart wrenching one?

Nomura: The ending for KH3D is a little unusual, the plan up until now had been different… But every once in a while I think, it’s good this way. In fact, the first ending I thought up quickly became no good due to various circumstances, but now the ending is something that I worry quite a bit about. As a result, we tried to do something unique for the ending this time. Incidentally, the secret movie will be shorter. Though it is short, like the Re:Coded secret movie, it will connect to the next shocking developments in the series, so please look forward to it.

How are the other upcoming titles coming along?

—The sale date for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is February 16th, can you tell us more about its upcoming release?

Nomura: It seems that the distribution of the trial version was very popular, so I’m not worried about its release. Since it’s been well received and we’d like to give players more opportunity to experience it, we’ll be releasing a 2nd demo about 10 days into February before its sale date.

—A second demo!?

Nomura: Yes (laughs). The plan is to distribute 2 more songs. The game is very addictive, so we’ve prepared the 2nd demo so players can get a real feel of how fun it is.

—By the way, after the game’s initial release, will more songs be distributed for download?

Nomura: That’s the plan. We’d like to make the game as enjoyable for as long as possible.

—There is one more title which you are the director of, would you mind sharing the production status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Nomura: The other day we announced that we did the first graphic check for this title the other day. Compared to the trailers we released last year, the expressiveness has really improved.

—You previously mentioned that Final Fantasy Versus XIII would not have cutscenes, but rather there will be two types of scenes, pre-rendered movies as well as real time movies that the players can control to some extent.

Nomura: Yes. As far as the ratio goes, about 70% of the cutscenes occur in real time while about 30% are pre-rendered scenes managed by Visual Works.

What did you mean by the expressiveness has been improved?

Nomura: I’m talking about the real time technology. The drawn expressions of the characters have rapidly improved. What the players can control in real time varies by scene, like I mentioned before “not everywhere” but there is still a lot of variation in that. In some pre-rendered scenes, the player’s intervention is not necessary; in other cases intervening will not have an effect. Because of that reason, the scene we previously introduced where Noctis and Stella meet has been switched to a pre-rendered one.

—Are there not plans to release a public trailer at a 1st Production Department private event like last year?

Nomura: Right now there are not plans for such an event. We’d like to do some sort of presentation this year, but the details like where etc. haven’t been decided yet. However, the next time we do a public event, I intend to show the true status of the game, since you can’t really fathom how unbelievable the current status of it is from a trailer alone.

—We can’t wait to see it! Lastly, tell us about your outlook for 2012 and your message to the readers.

Nomura: Well first off, I’d like to thank you in advance for your interest in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy which is our commemorative title celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series as well as KH3D which is in its final stages of production. Considering 2012 is the 10th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series, it’ll be good if we are able to do something special for it. Additionally there are the announcements regarding Final Fantasy Versus XIII we are considering, and the HD release of Final Fantasy X as well from the 1st Production Department to look forward to. There is also a secret team working on an unannounced title, so there is a chance that some information about that will be announced this year too, please continue looking forward to these announcements.

Big developments packed into a short time period!
- About how long does it take to clear the game?

Nomura: Probably about 35 hours? Upgrading and playing Flick Crash take time, so I think you could keep on playing it.

- The story and the system of this game are both packed with developments. Did you think the development period was going to be this long?

Nomura: It's really like one year since Birth by Sleep Final Mix. All the staff has worked very hard to make it here. The Osaka team took over development and even though they had only once worked with the Nintendo DS when they did Re:Coded, this is the first time they created a fully interactive 2-screened title. Even though this time the unreasonable demands were raised even more, I think their high level of creative consciousness really shines in this title.

- A lot of effort went into this title huh. By the way, we previously asked you about an announcement regarding Final Fantasy Versus XIII, is there any information you can share about when that would be?

Nomura: We hear from everyone that there is a high demand to release more information. We are almost finished preparing so we can respond to that. Even though we are in agreement, it's really not related to current developments so we aren't in a situation to release information about it. But since I'm not allowed to speak about it, I have no choice but to continue discussion in this way about it.

This is just a small example of how in the seventh generation, specifically in 2012, the Japanese developer was defeated by the Western developer and how they were being bullied. I personally think this was reflected internally in Square Enix causing FF Versus XIII to become sensitive inside Square Enix

The Japanese who asked the question is called Makoto Goto (his twitter), and he worked for Square Enix. He worked on the programming of Front Mission 4, then worked on developing the Crystal Tools engine, then worked as a programmer for FF13 cutscenes.

Nomura : People who want to forge into the game can choose to skip those and watch them later. That's an influence from the drastic change to non-interactive cutscenes we are including in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which we've been developing side by side. It's a result of us keeping tempo in mind, and trying to make as much as we can interactive.

Now the concept for KH3D was "bold action", can you tell us about the process for this?

Nomura: If from here on out, I were to leave the operation systems of the series titles as is, then I wanted to make a distinction from FF Versus XIII which I am currently developing. I think we spoke about it previously, but from the very beginning Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Kingdom Hearts are each action based RPGs, and working on them simultaneously, I wanted each of their differences to be clear. To indicate in what way Kingdom Hearts was different, I came up with the "bold action" concept.

Nomura begins work on Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts producer Tetsuya Nomura has explained in the Kingdom Hearts 3D Ultimania guide-book that his team has already begun work on a new game in the series. Nomura believes that this team will be able to make an announcement quite soon.

"New titles take precedence," says Nomura.

This week’s Famitsu features retrospectives on Final Fantasy VII and XI. In the Final Fantasy VII feature, character designer Tetsuya Nomura shares his thoughts on the game, a remake, and the series in general.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII not cancelled, Yoichi Wada responds



Yoichi Wada : “It seems someone is spreading a false rumor about Versus being canceled. Heh, just a few moments ago a regularly scheduled meeting for Versus ended. If you were to see the city etc. presented today, you’d wouldn’t be able to stand from surprise, lol,”

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada responded to recent rumours about Versus XIII being cancelled, and has emphatically denied that such a thing is true.

“It seems someone is spreading a false rumor about Versus being canceled. Heh, just a few moments ago a regularly scheduled meeting for Versus ended. If you were to see the city etc. presented today, you’d wouldn’t be able to stand from surprise, lol,” he tweeted.

Earlier Kotaku had reported that the game is cancelled and Square Enix were not going to announce the cancellation due to stock value falling down.

It remains to be seen whether the game will be shown at TGS or not, but it is highly rumoured that the game will be shown there. Nomura had earlier said that the game was in development and he can’t wait to share more information with fans.

Julien Merceron confirmed that FF Versus XIII was still in development.

Regarding Lightning Returns, development is coming along swiftly, and they’re currently showing the game to focus groups in order to narrow down what elements they should concentrate on in order to please fans. On a technology level, some elements from Versus XIII are being used in the game, as well as elements from FFXIII and XIII-2. It will, however, be very different from every Final Fantasy that has released so far.

Nomura : Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be revealed soon

You’ll have to wait a little bit longer for information on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, according to Tetsuya Nomura.

Joining in on the inaugural episode of Square Enix Merchandise Radio (mdRadio), the game director and character designer was on-hand as a special guest. Naturally, the other staff present – including merchandise guru Hidemi Matsuzuka – couldn’t help but ask about when the next details will be revealed for his elusive project.

“If we’re talking about when there will be news, [the merchandise team] put out something on the [Noctis] perfume. That turned into a huge mess, didn’t it?” You may recall Hidemi Matsuzuka’s tweet that sparked a fury of responses – a product that is curiously slated to go on sale this summer.

“It’s a delicate situation within the company. Very delicate.” explains Nomura. “We’ve been quiet for a year now, but the date is already set for our next reveal and we are steadily working toward preparing information for that. Last year we failed to announce anything about the game – to be honest I talked about sharing new information but wasn’t able to and I want to apologize for that.”

“Perhaps the details as to why information couldn’t be released might be touched upon with the next information announcement.” While Nomura apologizes for the delay, rest assured – a concrete date to reveal the game has been decided. Unfortunately, he’s not allowed to say anything just yet and so he would like fans to wait just a little while longer.

Here comes Shinji Hashimoto, brand director for Final Fantasy, to tell us more. "I was so excited that I had difficulty falling asleep last night," he tells us. "I'd like to remind you that even for us it's a huge amount of joy that we were finally able to announce Final Fantasy XV. Well, everyone is talking about the next-gen consoles at this year's E3. FFXV is being developed with a tool called Direct X 11. With this tool it's possible to port the title to various hardware. Following yesterday's announcement [for PS4] we would like to announce that we are porting Final Fantasy XV to Xbox One as well."

We're about to see an in-engine trailer.
"This is a fantasy based on reality," the trailer reads. Our black-haired hero is fighting guys on the walls of a skyscraper. Drops down to a plaza and swings a sword that'd make Cloud envious. A blonde friend shows up and shoots an enemy. And then black-hair is running around, kicking and slashing soldiers. This is all in real-time. We're seeing a montage. It looked really fluid and very good. We'll be able to show it to you shortly.

No release window for FFXV, but it was notably not mentioned as being part of this fiscal year, which ends on March 31 of 2014. Not surprisingly, you can expect it some time after that. A month, a year? Who know

The series has different systems and different mechanics for each title - for 15, they have chosen to make an action game.

It sounds like this is absolutely an action focused game. Hashimoto calls it an action RPG specifically.

"More information will come" on potential sequels. The 15 universe is large, and there are many stories to tell. Sequels could happen.

Next questioner wants to know about change from FF Versus XIII to its current incarnation as FFXV. "It might be similar to the previous answer," he said, "As you know Versus XIII was created as part of the Fabula Novalis epic. While development was going on, the content and world expanded. To deliver in an appropriate way to the fans we figured this might be the perfect time to evolve the title to XV for the next-gen consoles."

A question about the development teams... Hashimoto said the main staff remains and that he had actually played Versus XIII on PS3. "We have added more excellent staff."


Questioner wants to know if XV is a sign of a move to more action-oriented gameplay in the series. Hashimoto points out that FF change their game systems all the time. There is an "action-packed" game system in this game, but that doesn't mean there will be one in the next one.

A questioner asks if it's hard to turn-based battle systems now. No, Hashimoto said.

Questioner press: can you still make a multi-million dollar production that is based on the classic turn-based model? (The implication is that that's a harder mass-market sell.)Hashimoto: "I believe there is a future for both action RPG and command-based RPG," he says.

Any female playable characters in XV? That came from a questioner who said that the FFXV cast seemed to be all male and was wondering if Square was concerned about alienating their female fanbase. "The contents of the game re not discussed by me," Hashimoto said, before asking his questioner which female characters he liked. The questioner liked Yuna from Final Fantasy X. Hashimoto said he liked the question and would take it back to the team.

Tetsuya Nomura explains why Final Fantasy Versus 13 turned into Final Fantasy 15

Seven years and a month after it was first announced in E3 2006 under the name Final Fantasy Versus 13, Final Fantasy 15 finally had its first "real" debut trailer revealed at the LA Convention Center last week; However, as director Tetsuya Nomura revealed to Famitsu magazine in this week's issue, the decision to rename the project got its start a lot earlier than you'd think.

"Around one or two years after we announced FF Versus 13," he said, "it was suggested to us to shift to FF15 as part of the company's direction. By that time, a fair amount of time had already passed since the announcement and Versus was a well-known title, so it wasn't a given that this would be 15; it could have still been Versus. Personally, I came to accept the idea once FF Agito 13's name was changed to Final Fantasy Type-0."

As Nomura said, the final decision to switch to FF15 was made around two years ago. Why wait until now to mention that to the public, though? "As for the timing of the announcement," Nomura responded, "given that we were changing platforms as well, [the timing] wasn't something we could decide on our own discretion. We worked together with assorted other divisions to get it announced at this E3."

As for that shift in platform to the PS4 and Xbox One, "there are several reasons," he explained. "We had originally thought about making this announcement last year, but due to assorted reasons that got delayed. This meant that the lifespan of the current generation of consoles was starting to pose a problem to us. If we were a year later, other companies will have more time to research the next generation, and releasing the game against their products on the older generation could have caused us to look inferior when people inevitably compared us."

Nomura and his team also found themselves hitting a wall graphically with the PS3 and 360. "With current-gen systems, we couldn't fully express what we wanted to do in this project," he said. "There were more and more things that we would've had to change the form of. However, the assumption was that we'd go ahead with a current-gen release, so went through a trial-and-error process to do as much as we could. So we built an alpha version about a year ago, and the company response was 'If you remained bound to the current generation, will it will be the product you envisioned?' They suggested shifting fully to next-gen, and that was the spark that led to the move."

What are these things that he envisioned, or wanted to do, with this project? "It largely had to do with the display," Nomura responded. "I wanted FF15 to be as seamless as possible, and to achieve that, we needed to have all the actions you could potentially do always be available in memory. Since this is FF, after all, you have lots of potential factors, from the varied weapons to the party members' individual actions and magic spells. Keeping this massive amount of RPG character data around, and having them fight all kinds of monsters on a large map, is a lot of stuff. To that we're adding light sourcing, physics, filters, and other graphical elements, but there's only so much we could display at once, so we were forced to go through a weeding process."

"The trailer we showed at E3 has battle scenes that make use of a wide swath of space," he went on, "like how Noctis warps up to a higher area. Characters can go around this large yet intricately-detailed space, and it feels like an FFbattle. This presentation takes a lot of processing. Trying to do it on current-gen systems would mean that the display of objects may not be able to keep up within a world map-sized space. The map changes and destruction we showed in the video was also something we really wanted to do."

So FF15 is now a PS4 and Xbox One title, but Nomura is quick to point out that he's favoring no console over the other. "Previously we proceeded with development based on the capabilities of consoles like the PS3," he said. "Now, though, we're developing on DirectX 11, not based on the PS4 or the Xbox One. This lets us develop full-spec without worrying about individual platforms, then port it to each console in the most appropriate way. As a result, the originalFF15 runs on a pretty high-spec PC, and how close a console gets to this original depends on its specs. The idea is to keep our options open; if a console comes out in the future that can recreate the original, we can handle that. It's the opposite approach from your typical 'multiplatform' project which bases itself on the specs of a single console."

So a PC port is possible? "This isn't something we've really discussed, but it depends on the demand. Currently it'd require a pretty expensive PC, but if we get a lot of people in the future who want to play it with full specs, I think we can discuss supporting that."

Versus 13's renaming to 15 is a surprise in part because, over the past half-decade or so, Nomura mentioned once or twice in interviews that the game's story and content was possible precisely because this wasn't an "official," i.e. Roman-numeraled, Final Fantasy. However, Nomura doesn't see this as a problem - in fact, while he declined to discussed release dates or how far along the project was, he already began talking about the apparently-inevitable Final Fantasy 15-2we'll see someday. "When we started talking about the shift to FF15," he said, "we discussed with the company about whether it was really okay considering we had action-based battles and all these other things we tried to do because it wasn't a numbered title. That was not a problem for them, so our direction hasn't changed. However, as the 'A World of the Versus Epic' hints at in the end of the trailer, FF15 ends with a climax, but we plan to continue the story. That's something we have in mind as we complete the game."

Nomura @ E3, Part 2: Final Fantasy XV

Tetsuya Nomura’s livestream interview at E3 2013 went beyond discussing the Kingdom Hearts franchise. After showing us a new gameplay trailer, they immediately began talking about Final Fantasy XV!

  • Nomura right away explains that the trailer will be available to view on the company website after the livestream.

  • Regarding the name change from Versus XIII and the “feel” of being a numbered title: within the company, about one to two years after Versus XIII was announced, discussions were had on its scale and concept. It was considered that the game may be appropriate for Final Fantasy XV. They talked about it for several years. Two years ago (sometime in 2011), developers began to hear about next-generation consoles, and the team decided to make Final Fantasy Versus XIII into FFXV. One year ago, they decided that all development will shift to next-generation consoles, and the name was officially changed.

  • The game will be an action-based RPG. Not much turn-based style will feature in XV, but in the trailer, we can see a command system in the screen. Nomura tried to keep the “taste” of Final Fantasy; he’s not trying to make it all action. The game being a Final Fantasy entry is the most important thing. If Final Fantasy were to become an action game, Nomura feels that this game would come closest to showing what that would be like.

  • The interviewer notes that Noctis has many fans, but he is very mysterious. Nomura, meanwhile, describes Noct as “not cool” on the inside. Appearances can be deceiving. He’s rather cocky, and him not being cool is actually his main characteristic.

  • In Final Fantasy games, one’s party is necessary. How to use them is a core feature in Final Fantasy games, in regards to taking turns, how to act, etc. Noctis can battle by himself, but in the trailer, we can see him with other characters, as well. There will be lots of team cooperation, but it will be different from previous Final Fantasies. In the new gameplay trailer, we see three players/characters cooperating with each other to fight a giant (or a Behemoth). There will be drama in these interactions. It won’t be too systematic, but rather, it will have some story aspects to it as well. Nomura and his team are aware that battling with one’s party is necessary in the Final Fantasy series.

  • Unlike what the interviewer thought, Noctis doesn’t defy gravity/use gravity spells, but rather has the ability to teleport himself, including into the sky. In trying to make a game realistic, it becomes impossible to enjoy. Nomura has been trying to figure out a good balance between realism and the game’s main entertainment as a “fantasy.”

  • Until about a year ago, the team was making FFXV for current-generation consoles as well. But next-generation consoles, according to Nomura, have better quality. This better quality only increases as the development proceeds.

  • The way of developing the game (or games in general) has changed. Before, when going multi-platform, a game would be fit to one console’s specifications and would be “evened out” to other consoles. But now, games made in a different way. Nomura always had in mind that he didn’t want to make a game that compromises quality.

  • This time, using a different development method, Nomura chose not to look at consumer consoles to meet their specifications; instead, he focused on making higher quality games. They used a development tool called DirectX 11 to make the game. The consoles that handle that tool can be used to port the game. The team hopes to maintain the original high quality of the game they’re making when it’s ported to consoles.

  • Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV are both coming to PS4 and the Xbox One, but DirectX 11 is the key: whichever hardware is compatible with DirectX 11, the team will keep that hardware in consideration.
No word yet on why exactly Versus XIII has been kept in the dark for so long, but it sounds likely that the shift to next-generation consoles (and the name change) played a big role in its absence over the past two years. It’s also possible that Nomura’s new philosophy on game development lended itself to the game’s development time, but whether or not he was specifically referring to XV or modern games in general wasn’t made clear.

Director Nomura Talks Similarities Between Final Fantasy XV And Kingdom Hearts

We recently got a look at a couple internal interviews conducted by Square Enix, where director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Final Fantasy XV will be considered for hardware that uses DirectX 11 and how they had to recreate graphics after losing the data for the original Kingdom Hearts.

In a new Famitsu interview, Nomura shares new information regarding Final Fantasy XV, along with some comparisons to the Kingdom Hearts series.

In Final Fantasy XV’s gameplay trailer from E3, we got a good look at the action portion of the game, that showed Noctis warping around while using different weapons to take on Iron Giants and a Behemoth. According to Nomura, the scene was that of a very high leveled Noctis, who makes use of various weapons and his warping ability. In the early stages of the game, it won’t be quite the same.

Famitsu points out that the trailer seems to show a lot of cooperative actions between Noctis and his allies. They also mention how some people may be concerned about whether these actions will make the gameplay a little too complicated to control.

“The starting point will have a sense of control that is similar to that of Kingdom Hearts’ ‘easy and refreshing action,’ so it won’t be difficult,” says Nomura. “Most of it will come pretty naturally to you. We’re currently testing out different operational methods with each hardware. Regarding allies, in addition to cooperative attacks, there will also be situational actions, which will be part of various scenarios in battles.”

In Final Fantasy XV, you’ll get to ride on Behemoths and pull off other extravagant actions against enemies. Nomura also mentions that the free-run aspect doesn’t only apply to the map, but also monsters. For example, you’ll also get to climb onto monsters and aim for specific parts of their bodies.

Nomura reiterates, “There’s a battle where Leviathan is causing a waterspout. There’s a scene that shows a fight inside the tornado while jumping between the debris of collapsed buildings. I believe that boss fights will feature such particular flashy situations.”

Speaking of sea monsters, Nomura also revealed some information regarding the nation that appears to have an abundant supply of water. According to Nomura, the nation of Accordo (pictured above) is heavily inspired by the city of Venice, Italy. Nomura visited Venice visited back in 2004 and 2005. In addition to Accordo, Lucis, Solheim and Tenebrae are the four great nations that were originally entrusted to protect the four crystals. However, the Kingdom of Lucis remains to be the only one that’s been able to protect it up until now. There will also be several cities and towns in the world of Final Fantasy XV.

Some fans have been curious about the bottom-left part of the screen that appears to indicate a variety of weapons. According to Nomura, it was originally set in a way where weapons would automatically switch according to the combo structures. This has since then been changed, allowing players to have the option to select their own weapons at all times. In regards to other commands and gauges, Nomura will be revealing more in the near future.

We’ve seen the speed that Noctis is capable of in the gameplay trailer from E3. Nomura, who says they’re focusing greatly on the sense of speed, compares it to the Kingdom Hearts series in that players can get a grasp of the character’s movements, but a person who is simply watching might not understand what’s going on.

“While Final Fantasy XV focuses on the realistic side of things, Kingdom Hearts is more about the ‘bold action,’” says Nomura in regards to the comparison. “In short, it’s about having movements that wouldn’t be possible, but making it look real instead of unnatural. In a way, it connects it to Kingdom Hearts’ fresh characteristics.”

Famitsu also expressed their curiosity toward the two characters who appear to be villains (pictured above). One is an older man with white hair and sharp eyes, while the other appears to be a peculiar redhead.

“These two are are hostile characters who are against Noctis, and there will be plenty of other villains” says Nomura. “The red-haired character is voiced by Keiji Fujiwara, so we decided to give him red hair. Mr. Fujiwara voiced the roles of Reno from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Axel from the Kingdom Hearts series, so we decided to go with red hair to keep the same flow.”

Finally, Famitsu points out that there appears to be an overwhelming amount of male characters. Nomura jokingly responds, “At the end of the trailer in the part with the aligned faces, there’s one new female character… Okay, it’s full of guys (laughs).”

Nomura-san gets interviewed at Japan Expo; speaks about KH3 and FFXV

Finaland & FFDream: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX includes Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, which was released exclusively in Japan. How then will the new cutscenes be localized for the Western version? Will it be dubbed in French?

Tetsuya Nomura :Unfortunately we didn’t have any opportunity to put the french voice over in this 1.5 version so it’s going to be french subtitles only.

Finaland & FFDream : How did you come to split the development team into two teams? How far are you involved in the development of Kingdom Hearts III?

TN : For this HD version of Kingdom Hearts 1.5, the main programmers never actually worked in the Kingdom Hearts series before and they did all the remastering, all the processing, all the actual work by themselves and for Kingdom Hearts III the other staff is doing all the testing, deciding which kind of elements we want to put in the game and everything.

So there’s one team doing HD 1.5 and another one doing KH3, that’s how we’ve been working for the last couple years.

Regarding my personal involvement in Kingdom Hearts III, I always have been heavily involved in this project compared to the other games i’m actually producing or directing.

The team creating Kingdom Hearts III is in the studios in Osaka, and as you guys know Osaka and Tokyo are a little bit far away from each other but we meet enough with meetings quite often and we’re doing telephone conferences too. So we communicate all the time as I am quite heavily involved on this project.

Finaland & FFDream : With the acquisition of Marvel and Lucas Arts by Disney, could you imagine adding some kind of stuff from these licenses in the game ?

TN : (laughs) Of course it would be great if we could add those licenses as well. But there are lots of rules and restrictions by disney so we can’t actually put everything people want, so it’s a quite difficult decision but we’re gonna prepare some surprises for you so, just wait for the informations.

Finaland & FFDream : Because you know that Kitase-san (Yoshinori Kitase) is a big fan of Star Wars ! So you have to do that !

TN : (laughs) We’re not going to decide it whether Kitase-san likes Star Wars or not but we’ve been talking about Star Wars itself since it became Disney’s content recently. When I eared the news I was like “Wow ! Wow !”. Yeah obviously it’s gonna be great if we could add it, but like I said there are a lot of restrictions and rules by Disney so we don’t know what’s gonna happen but yeah, we’ll see.

Finaland & FFDream : Can we expect a multiplayer cooperative mode with many playables characters in KHIII ?

TN : The Kingdom Hearts series always had Sora as the main character, so we want to make the most of Sora, playable Sora of course. But again, Kingdom Hearts III is going to be the last chapter of the Kingdom Hearts main numbering title series, so lots of fans actually want to play as their favorite characters in Kingdom Hearts III so we will consider that, we will listen to what fans wants but hopefully we could give you some surprises in the future announcements.

Finaland & FFDream : You watch a lot of movies, how does that inspire you ? Do you pick some ideas in the movies you watch ?

TN : I watch movies a lot, I mean A LOT (laughs), normally like two, three films a day, it’s my pace. I watch quite a lot so I don’t always remember the names or titles even. So I watch and then I get a bit of inspirations from films and stuff, I can’t name the actual titles of the movies that actually inspired me to create games but when I’m watching movies sometimes I feel like “ Oh ! That’s nice !” or “That’s good!”, something like that.

Finaland & FFDream : Nomura-san, your character outfits are more and more detailed. When we saw Cloud for the first time in 1997 and now Noctis in 2013, there’s a lot of greatness in them. Have you received some fashion lessons or do you just follow fashion ?

TN : Obviously I always think about the current kind of trend and fashion and everything when I create the characters but this time for XV and Noctis and all the main characters that have been revealed, this time we actually asked for a professional brand to create the characters outfits, we also have the actual clothes in the office so our CG team and all the teams can actually see the clothes with their own eyes to create exactly the same image in the game. And that’s really easier because previously when I created the characters, all the CG team and all of our entire development team always asked me “Is this leather? Is this coton? Is this nylon? How many percentage ? Dadadada” That’s a lot of detailed questions so it’s always difficult to precise what kind of texture are the clothes made off and stuff like that, so that’s why this time we had the actual clothes made and then we take it from there and put it in the game.

Finaland & FFDream : Nomura-san, you work on a lot of project like Final Fantasy XV, the Kingdom Hearts Saga, The World Ends With You. How do you manage all the projects you have at the same time?

TN : Actually I am not very good at managing myself, especially at managing lots of different projects, but because of my staff and all the staffs are very very intelligent, very good and very capable I’m able to run all the different projects at the same time. And also the most important are the Co-Directors in each project, again they are very capable and skilled people, they are the people actually managing the actual everyday job on the ground. That’s why I’m here, they are supporting me all the time.

Finaland & FFDream : You’ve created a lot of characters for the Final Fantasy series. What’s your favorite character between all those you’ve created ?

TN : Hmm if I had to choose a favorite character, I would say Sora, and Noctis. Why them? Of course Sora, I’ve been together with him for more than ten years now, this is the first time i’ve been with a character for such a long time, so he’s very very special for me and he’s been adopted by Disney also, so he’s a very very good boy. More like a good son actually.

Also there is Noctis, he hasn’t been in front of you, I mean moving etc yet in a real gameplay but he will soon, in the future.

Do you know the name Sora mean the “sky”, in japanese and Noctis, his family name is Caelum which mean sky as well so basically, Noctis mean “night sky”, so they are kind of complete opposites to each other. There is a reason why I named these characters as opposites. Noctis is kind of like my latest boy, or latest son and I expect him to be more clever than Cloud.

Finaland & FFDream : Okay, one question Tetsuya Nomura, very important for us, and for Hideo Kojima because Hideo Kojima said he’d love a remake of Final Fantasy VII, but what about you ? Would you like to play a Metal Gear Solid 1 Remake ?

TN : To play ?

Finaland & FFDream : Yes, to play.

TN : Of course I’d like, if he were going to do a MGS remake.

Finaland & FFDream : And what do you think about the differences of the Fox Engine and your own Luminous Engine ?

TN : I think the Fox Engine and Luminous Engine are totally different engines because they each got different kind of abilities and skills and stuff that we could use in a game. One engine can do certain things the other engine can’t for example. It depends on what you want to do, but I think they totally are two different kind of engines.

Finaland & FFDream : A Final Fantasy XV question, what should we expect in terms of vehicles ? Can we pilot airships and explore the world of Final Fantasy XV and discover its secrets ?

TN : We don’t have any big plans for having different type of vehicles and stuff like that. There’s one you saw in the recent trailer of course.

Well two things you probably could use, first, the car, the car is gonna be the vehicle you’ll use probably the most in the game. The other one, the magitek armor, you can actually control and ride the magitek armor as well, in a future reveal you’ll probably find more.

Finaland & FFDream : A motorbike ?

TN : (laughs) In Final Fantasy XV you play as a party, you’re always with your friends so five guys riding a motorbike together, I’m not sure if this would works.

Finaland & FFDream : In a gang ! Like Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo.

TN : (laugh), yeah maybe it doesn’t look very good in a game.

Finaland & FFDream : Why did you change Stella’s design and made her look so much younger. Is it because of story development or because you made a survey with the audience ?

TN : There is no specific reason behind hit, but we didn’t want to make her look younger, we just wanted to make her a little bit prettier. That’s all.

Finaland & FFDream : But in 2007 she was very nice ! She’s very nice and still pretty but she’s still a little younger.

TN : When I created Stella, back in 2007, I actually created something that is not my type of character, but obviously time has past since then, about six years now, and then she actually became something that I quite like now.

Finaland & FFDream : In the trailer we could briefly see Noctis with red eyes. Will the red eyes give him some sort of special power during the battles ?

TN : In the last promotion trailer, Noctis got red eyes because he got the ability of teleportation, so that’s why when he did that, his eyes got red. Actually Visual Works created the trailer back then in 2007.

When you actually play the game, you can’t really see and zoom in the face of the character anyway. And he moves very fast as well so… if the character’s face is actually seen in a zoomed-in on the screen, we probably could still make his eyes red but we haven’t decided whether we’re gonna need the red eyes or not.

Finaland & FFDream : The game looks very serious and fatalist. Have you planned to add some sort of fun moments or funny mini-games ?

TN : We are actually thinking to have some sort of fun elements in the game, but for the moment the priority is to create the main game itself. I will add or not add stuff like that depending on how the development of the main game goes , but yeah we are thinking about that.

Finaland & FFDream : About the artistic direction of the game. The appearance of the Kingdom of Lucis is much like the Shinjuku district in Tokyo and Accordo has the same feeling of Venice, in Italy. Can we hope to see some places inspired by the french regions perhaps ? Paris perhaps ?

TN : Well do you have any games actually based in Paris ?

Finaland & FFDream : Deling City from Final Fantasy VIII with the Arc de Triomphe.

TN : If we’ve used it before we might not want to use it in a new game (laughs). So i’m not sure about using Paris. In my opinion, in lot of RPG games there are many European motives, European things, cities and stuff where your characters live and play but you guys still think like you need more European things or French things?

Finaland & FFDream : We’d just love to see that in Final Fantasy, we are sure it would be very nice.

TN : Well we’ll thing about that, that’s all I can say.

Finaland & FFDream : Thank you very much !

We’ve seen a lot of male characters with Noctis and his friends. Is there going to be girls as playable characters as well ?

TN : I can’t say anything specific now but it would be… quite difficult, to have a girl playable.

Finaland & FFDream : Question about this place, we are in Japan Expo, there are more than two hundred thousand people there, loving japanese culture so much. We actually watch anime in original version and we watched Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete only in japanese.

Can we hope to get the original japanese voices for Final Fantasy XV in Europe.

TN : That all depends of the capacity of the disc. The two main reason are the disc space and also the lip sync, because if we’re making the game, with the characters speaking in english but with the voices in japanese, the lip sync would not match. Even though you’d prefer having the japanese voices?

Finaland & FFDream : Yes, actually, please, we have a solution for you, can you think of a limited edition with only japanese voices and french text, would it be possible to do that?

TN : You really want this that much?

Finaland & FFDream : YES YES YES we really want japanese voices.

TN : (laughs) You’ll have to say this YES YES YES to Square enix though for not to me. If you guys really want THAT kind of request very much from all the fans and all the community side and everything, it would probably be best to tell Square Enix France or Square Enix Europe to make that happen. Square Enix France of Europe could speak to Square Enix Japan and it probably could make it happen, but we’ll see.

Finaland & FFDream : Thank you !

Next question, is it Game Over if Noctis dies ?

TN : At some time I said that the game was gonna be over when Noctis died, when we were talking about Versus XIII, but now as Versus XIII became Final Fantasy XV we haven’t decided it actually so we can’t really say if it’s going to change or not, we’ll see.

Finaland & FFDream : Will we be able to customize weapons and equipments of our characters ?

TN : I’m sorry but we can’t say anything about that, yet.

Finaland & FFDream : What can you tell us about the future of Dissidia, on PSVita or PS4 maybe ? With the addition of Noctis ?

TN : I’m not that heavily involved in Dissidia project, but if director Takahashi want to include Noctis in the next Dissidia game, I would probably think about it then, but I can’t really say anything so far.

Finaland & FFDream : You made the two video presentations for E3 from Artnia the place for all your fans in Japan

The announcement was so exciting for us, how do you react to that and are you glad to be back?

TN : I was very very busy, I didn’t prepare enough to do that video message recording at all…

Finaland & FFDream : It was GOOD !

TN : (laughs) Actually that recording was, yes, happening in Artnia, recorded by the promo and publicity staffs. There was not even a microphone there, so it probably was quite difficult for you guys to listen to what I actually said. I was myself really surprised as well because Sony said they needed a video message so that’s why we did it, only a couple of days before flying for E3.

Finaland & FFDream : What will the addition of Hajime Tabata, the great producer of Final Fantasy Type-0 bring to the FFXV team ?

TN : The reason why we bringed Tabata-san into the team is because he always said to me that it wanted to join the Final Fantasy XV project. I asked him in the team, his vitality and mentality are always very motivated and very high. In the future campaign and until the game is out, Tabata-san himself will be going to speak in front of you guys more often so please ask him in details when he’s available.

Finaland & FFDream : Nomura-san can we imagine that you’ll work on Final Fantasy XV-2 just after finishing the first one?

TN : Obviously we haven’t decided yet. We don’t have any concrete plan for a future sequel of FFXV, it would be good if we could do that but we can’t announce it or say anything into detail for the moment so wait for future informations.

Finaland & FFDream : Last question, Nomura-san it’s the first time we saw you with the fan communities in France, we are very happy to see you. Do you think that you will come again next time ?

TN : Of course i’d love to come again, but other people working on my project obviously want to come to meet the fans and meet you guys as well, so we’re gonna decide depending on what kind of event or opportunity we’ll have in a future. You guys definitely want to see the same face every year so (laughs) we’ll see about that.

Finaland & FFDream : We always see Kitase-san and Toriyama-san. Hashimoto-san too. We saw them every year for XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns. I saw Shinji Hashimoto in 2010 and we talked about Versus XIII and we were talking about teleportation in the game and he said “Oh I don’t know if Nomura-san will do that” and now we actually see that in the game and it’s just amazing.

Thank you very much for your work and we all hope that you will succeed with this project.

TN : This time I came here to promote Kingdom Hearts 1.5 (laughs) so it’s a bit early for me to talk to you about the details of Final Fantasy XV, but when we’ll have to decide when to release, or for the campaign kick-off i’ll probably come back again, we’ll see, and thank you.

Kitase : No Plan for FFVII Remake

Kitase : We are aware that there is a max expectation from our fans for a FFVII remake and we know that. At the moment there is no plan. But if we did want to do that, we have to sit down and think carefully what would be the best possible way to do that.

Japan Expo : interview de Tetsuya Nomura

Tetsuya Nomura était probablement la personnalité la plus attendue de Japan Expo. Et pour cause, l'homme se fait habituellement très discret dans la presse comme lors des salons. À quelques semaines de la sortie de Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX et quelques jours après l'annonce officielle de Kingdom Hearts III et Final Fantasy XV, l'occasion était trop belle pour venir à la rencontre des fans français.

Vous avez déjà probablement lu nos interviews de Naoki Yoshida, Yoshinori Kitase et Motomu Toriyama, au sujet de Final Fantasy XIV, Lightning Returns et Final Fantasy X. Square Enix nous a aussi donné l'opportunité de poser quelques questions au créateur de Kingdom Hearts, entrevue préparée avec Jérémie deFFWorld, qui a eu la gentillesse de représenter nos deux sites ce jour-là. Tetsuya Nomura a également accepté de répondre à quelques questions concernant Final Fantasy XV, en précisant que d'autres opportunités se présenteront à l'avenir pour parler précisément du développement de ce jeu. Kingdom HeartsKingdom Hearts était votre premier titre en tant que réalisateur. Quel regard portez-vous aujourd'hui sur ce jeu ?


Nomura :
Cela fait bien sûr plus de dix ans depuis que le jeu est sorti, mais je ne trouve toujours pas qu'il ait vieilli. Au contraire, il a toujours une certaine fraîcheur. A l'époque, l'équipe du jeu, moi y compris, avait travaillé passionnément dessus, alors c'est sans doute pour cela qu'il me donne cette impression, même dix ans après.

N'avez-vous pas été tenté d'ajouter plus de choses à la remasterisation HD de Kingdom Hearts que simplement une mise à jour des graphismes et des contrôles ?

Nomura :
Tout ce qu'il y avait dans l'épisode original fonctionnait très bien car l'équilibre du jeu était basé sur le système que nous avions imaginé à l'époque. Même si j'ai conçu plein d'autres systèmes de jeux durant les dix années qui ont suivi, je pense que cet équilibre serait bouleversé si je devais en intégrer au premier Kingdom Hearts. Mon seul regret concerne Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, pour lequel nous n'avons pu intégrer que les cinématiques en version HD. J'aurais souhaité proposer cet épisode sous une forme jouable dans HD 1.5 ReMIX, mais nous n'avons malheureusement pas pu le faire car nous devions mettre la priorité sur le développement de Kingdom Hearts III, que les fans attendent depuis longtemps. C'est pour cela que nous n'avons pas ajouté d'autres choses à cette version HD.

Prévoyez-vous d'autres remasterisations HD à l'avenir ?

Nomura :
Il reste bien sûr d'autres épisodes de Kingdom Hearts que nous n'avons pas encore publiés au format HD, alors si nous en avions l'occasion, nous aimerions le faire à l'avenir.


Avec l'annonce de Kingdom Hearts III, on peut dire que vous avez confié à l'avenir de la série à l'équipe d'Osaka. Vous étiez sûr qu'ils étaient à la hauteur de ce défi ?

Nomura :
Le studio d'Osaka a tout de même développé ce HD 1.5 ReMIX, alors on ne peut pas dire qu'ils n'ont jamais travaillé sur un épisode pour console de salon. Mais vous avez raison, dans le cas de Kingdom Hearts III, il s'agit effectivement de la première fois qu'ils développent un épisode numéroté complètement nouveau, sur consoles de nouvelle génération qui plus est. C'est la raison pour laquelle nous avons procédé à de nombreuses préparations et à de nombreux essais jusqu'à maintenant. Comme j'ai le sentiment que les préparations sont désormais terminées, nous avons pu entrer en phase de développement.

Mais comme la maison mère de Square Enix est à Tokyo, n'avez-vous pas des difficultés à communiquer avec l'équipe d'Osaka ?

Nomura :
En fait, le coréalisateur Tai Yasue et la productrice Rie Nishi se trouvent là-bas. Ce sont des membres clé du projet Kingdom Hearts, alors quand ils ont besoin de discuter de plein de sujets différents avec moi, ils viennent à Tokyo. C'est notre méthode de travail habituelle. Mais comme la technologie avance sans cesse, nos nouveaux bureaux à Shinjuku sont maintenant équipés d'un système de visioconférence. Désormais, Yasue et Nishi peuvent m'envoyer leurs documents ou leurs propositions à l'avance, ce qui me permet d'ajouter mes commentaires ou mes dessins et de leur montrer sur la caméra pendant nos visioconférences. En plus, il n'y a aucun décalage horaire, alors même si nous sommes éloignés, il est facile de travailler.

On peut donc dire que vous supervisez davantage l'équipe que vous ne la dirigez.

Nomura :
Oui, surtout cette fois avec Kingdom Hearts III. L'équipe de Yasue et Nishi me propose plein d'idées et nous en discutons ensemble pour savoir lesquelles nous allons garder ou non.


Vous ont-ils surpris ?

Nomura :
Ils me proposent bien sûr de nombreuses idées intéressantes. Après tout, plus on est de fous, plus on rit. Il est donc toujours préférable d'avoir une équipe entière pour y réfléchir, plutôt que moi seul. C'est bénéfique.

En dix années d'existence, la série Kingdom Hearts a trouvé sa propre identité même si beaucoup étaient surpris à l'origine par cette alliance entre Square et Disney. Pensez-vous qu'il est toujours utile d'intégrer des personnages de Final Fantasy dans KHIII ?

Nomura :
Ce n'est pas parce que la série Kingdom Hearts est désormais bien établie que nous n'avons plus besoin d'ajouter des personnages de Final Fantasy. Il se trouve en réalité que nous avons publié un certain nombre d'épisodes dérivés sur les consoles portables ces dernières années, et qu'à cause des limites techniques de ces plateformes, le volume de l'histoire était plutôt limité. Pour KHIII, l'espace disque sera beaucoup plus grand, alors nous pourrons réellement approfondir l'histoire et y a ajouter plus de personnages. Tout dépend vraiment du volume du jeu. Il est tout à fait possible que nous intégrions beaucoup de personnages de FF dans KHIII.

Vous travaillez avec la compositrice, Mme Shimomura, depuis le premier épisode. Maintenant qu'elle travaille aussi sur les musiques de Final Fantasy XV, allez-vous lui donner une direction différente ?

Nomura :
Oui, j'ai décidé de donner une direction totalement différente à Mme Shimomura parce que les jeux eux-mêmes sont complètement distincts l'un de l'autre. Dans le cas de Kingdom Hearts, je lui demande le plus souvent de composer de la musique scène après scène, afin que chacune d'elles reflète certains thèmes en particulier. Mais dans le cas de Final Fantasy XV, je lui ai donné les idées générales du projet dès le départ. Il m'arrive aussi de lui proposer des types de musique qui me semblent appropriés.


Final Fantasy XV Comme vous travaillez sur le projet Versus devenu FFXV depuis si longtemps, votre vision n'a-t-elle pas changé avec le temps ? Par exemple, au départ, vous disiez que vous vouliez reproduire les sensations des Final Fantasy à l'ancienne.

Nomura :
Oui, j'ai sans doute indiqué que je voulais donner à FFXV un esprit proche des anciens épisodes. Mais si vous regardez la bande annonce, vous vous rendez compte que le jeu est en réalité très orienté vers l'action, surtout quand vous le comparez aux précédents FF. Si nous avons voulu créer un Final Fantasy aussi riche en action, c'était parce que nous voulions donner du dynamisme à la fois à l'histoire et au système de jeu en lui-même. Naturellement, nous allons également intégrer de nombreux éléments propres à Final Fantasy, sinon nous n'aurions eu aucune raison de l'appeler FFXV. Il y aura donc un peu de cet esprit Final Fantasy à l'ancienne dans le jeu.

Vous avez récemment annoncé que Hajime Tabata serait le coréalisateur de FFXV. Quelle sera sa contribution au projet ?

Nomura :
Nous ne l'avons pas invité à participer au développement pour une raison précise, mais ce qui est sûr, c'est qu'il fait déjà de l'excellent travail. Il est auprès de l'équipe au quotidien et il discute d'absolument tout avec elle. Il est extrêmement passionné par ce projet.


Il y a quelques années, vous indiquiez que les cinématiques en temps réel de Versus seraient toutes jouables. Avez-vous conservé cette idée dans FFXV ?

Nomura :
Oui, j'aimerais y parvenir autant que possible. Notre idée est en réalité de faire en sorte que le joueur ne s'arrête jamais de jouer. Je serais vraiment satisfait si nous parvenions à atteindre cet objectif.

J'imagine que, pour cela, la puissance des nouvelles consoles est un atout.

Nomura :
Absolument. Je suis très confiant.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD sortira le 13 septembre en France. Vous pouvez d'ores-et-déjà le précommander en édition limitée. Pour le reste, mieux vaut ne pas trop s'avancer quant aux dates de sortie, naturellement...

――『ファイナルファンタジー』(以下、『FF』)シリーズ待望のナンバリングタイトルである『FFXV』とはどのようなゲームなのか、改めて教えてください。
野村
 『FFXV』は、『FF』シリーズのナンバリングタイトルでは初となる、アクションベースのRPGです。3Dグラフィックになってからの『FF』では、映像・演出面でプリレンダムービーを使用することが多かったのですが、今回ハードが変わったことで、いままでプリレンダで表現していたような演出をすべてリアルタイムで実現可能になりました。ですので、かなりダイナミックな場面であっても、キャラクターを操作できるようになると思います。

――“ダイナミックな場面”とは、どのようなシーンでしょうか?
野村
 たとえば、E3で公開した映像でもご覧いただいた、リヴァイアサンが街で暴れていて、巻き上がる水流の中で主人公が飛び回って戦っているシーンですね。いままでだと、あのようなシーンはすべて、ビジュアルワークス(※スクウェア・エニックスの映像制作チーム)のプリレンダのムービーで表現していました。ですが今回はリアルタイムで、実際にプレイできます。

――かなり派手なバトルが楽しめるのではないかと、期待が高まります。
野村
 『FFXV』のバトルは、極力シームレスにするということと、操作キャラクターを場面場面で切り換えて戦うということをコンセプトに作っています。それぞれのキャラクターには強い個性があって、その個性を活かして連携できるようにしていますが、連携の演出も、これまでプリレンダで表現されていたようなものがリアルタイムで展開されます。

――E3の映像でも、仲間が主人公を援護している様子が見られました。
野村
 あの演出もリアルタイムです。それから、バトルで重視しているのはスピード感ですね。アクションべースになりましたので、なるべくプレイヤーが操作しない状態を作らないようにしています。敵も味方も動き回って、戦況がスピーディーに変わっていき、その臨場感がある中で戦うという点が、これまでの『FF』とは違うところだと思います。

では逆に、『FF』らしいポイントはどこでしょうか?
野村
 『FF』のバトルは、HPなどの数値が画面に表示されていて、敵を攻撃したり味方が攻撃を受けたりすると、ダメージの数値が出るというものです。“表示される数値を見ながら行動を考える”というのが、これまでの『FF』のバトルの流れですので、その点は踏襲しています。それをなくしてしまうと、『FF』らしくないと思うので。数値を考えながら、アクションのテクニックで戦う。このふたつが同居しているアクションタイプのバトルは、おそらくほかにはないと思います。

――続いて、『FFXV』の世界と物語についてうかがいます。『FFXV』では、どのような世界を冒険できるのでしょうか?
野村
 『FFXV』の物語は、『FFXIII』や『FF零式』の世界設定の根幹にある“ファブラ・ノヴァ・クリスタリス”の神話を継承してはいますが、この2作品とは異なるオリジナルの世界観を確立しています。神話が根付いているものの、人々の思想はかなり現代に寄っているので、神話が表立っていない世界。ストーリーは、敵国に奪われたクリスタルを、主人公たちが取り戻しにいくというシンプルなものです。その中で人間関係が交差する、『FF』らしい物語の展開になっています。

――欧州の街を思わせるような、リアルなグラフィックも印象的です。
野村
 『FFXV』のテーマは“現実に基づいた幻想”なので、現実世界の空間にいるような絵作りをコンセプトにしています。その中でファンタジーが展開するということが、『FFXV』の大きなポイントです。そこまでの表現力を実現するのは、PS4ぐらいのハードでないと難しかったと思います。

“ムリ”を実現させられるPS4
――『FFXV』の開発を進める中で、PS4の性能について見えてきたことはありますか?
野村
 開発者からすると、ハードについていちばん気にするポイントはメモリなんです。メモリが大きければ大きいほどムリができるので。

――野村さんがしたい“ムリ”とは、どのようなものですか?
野村
 メモリに常駐できるデータが多ければ多いほど、ゲーム中の読み込み頻度を減らせますし、広いスケールでのゲームの展開が可能になります。最初にお話しした、おおくの 演出をリアルタイムで表現できるというのも、メモリの大きさによるところが大きいですね。また、バトルでのキャラクターのモーション数や、持ち換えられる武器の種類も多いので、それらのデータを常駐させられるという点では、『FFXV』とPS4はかなり相性がいいと思っています。

――ダイナミックなバトルのように、作りたいものを、納得がいくまで作り込めるようになったのですね。
野村
 そのぶん、たいへんになったこともあります。E3の映像の中にベヒーモスが出てくるのですが、このあいだ、そのベヒーモスのフェイシャル表現についてスタッフと話をしたんです。これまでフェイシャルを作るのはキャラクターだけでよかったのに、モンスターのフェイシャルまで作る時代になってしまった。これからは、いままで以上に細部にまで気を配らないといけません。


――本作について、プレイステーション Vitaや、スマートフォンなどとの連動は考えていますか?
野村
 携帯デバイスとの何かしらの連動は考えたいですね。PS4が、外のデバイスとつながる機能が充実しているというのは、時代に合っていますし、自分たちのやろうとしていることとも合致しています。いまの時代、据え置きのハードの前に長時間座り続けていただくのは難しいと思うので、出かけているときも『FFXV』の世界に触れられるような何かは必要かなと。

――新しい連動の形を楽しみにしています。それでは、最後に読者にメッセージをお願いします。
野村
 『ヴェルサスXIII』と名乗っていたころからかなりの年月が経ってしまいましたが、そのぶん、皆さんの期待が高いということも重々承知しておりますので、その想いに沿えるよう、スタッフ一同がんばっています。ぜひ期待していてください。

While we didn’t exactly get a “new” trailer forFinal Fantasy XV, that showed any additional footage from the one showed during this year’s E3, director Tetsuya Nomura appeared in an interview on Sony’s PlayStation Community website, where he briefly discussed the game. Famitsu.com havetranslated the interview, and below are the pertinent details.

The interview begins with Nomura being asked to provide us a little insight on what kind of game we can expect from the long-awaited new numbered Final Fantasy title.

Final Fantasy XV will be the first of the Final Fantasy main numbered series that is based on an action RPG,” explains Nomura. “Since we started using 3D graphics for Final Fantasy, we’ve often prepared pre-rendered movies for the custscenes; however, since the hardware has changed this time, we’ve been able to feasibly render such cutscenes for real-time [gameplay].”

“For this reason, you’ll have full control of your character even during highly dynamic scenes.”

Nomura elaborates, “For example, in the video we showed during E3, a Leviathan was going berserk in the town, as waterspouts were seen gushing from under water, while the protagonist was jumping around and fighting. Up until now, such scenes were always part of Visual Works’ (Square Enix’s video production team) pre-rendered movies. This time, you’ll actually get to play it in real-time.”

The director then gives a little insight on what to expect from the battles of Final Fantasy XV.

“The concept of Final Fantasy XV’s battle system is to make it as seamless as possible, and being able to fight while switching characters according to various situations,” says Nomura. “Each character has their own strengths that can be used in a cooperative fashion, and even such scenes that depict the moments of cooperation that were pre-rendered up until now, will be shown in real-time.

One notable scene that was shown during the E3 trailer, depicted Noctis’ childhood friend Prompto Argentum helping out in the midst of combat.

“That scene was also rendered in real-time,” explains Nomura. “The battles put a lot of emphasis on the feeling of speed. Since it will be based on action, we’re doing as much as we can to lessen the moments players don’t have control. As enemies and allies run around, the pace of battles becomes faster, and fighting amidst the sense of reality is what I believe sets it apart from Final Fantasy titles up until now.”

While Final Fantasy XV will be quite different from any other traditional game of its series, what is it that makes it more like an actualFinal Fantasy game?

Final Fantasy battles are about having numbers of HP and such, be displayed on the screen, which appears while hitting enemies or being hit by them,” Nomura feels. “Up until now, ‘looking at the displayed numerical values while thinking of your next actions’ was the flow of Final Fantasy battles, which will be inherited [in Final Fantasy XV]. If we didn’t keep that, I don’t think it would feel like a Final Fantasy. Thinking about numbers, along with action techniques. I don’t think there are any other games that feature such action type battle that combines the two.”

The interview then moves on to the subject ofFinal Fantasy XV’s story and what kind of world we can expect to explore.

“While the story of Final Fantasy XV is based on the world setting of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos, similar to Final Fantasy XIIIand Final Fantasy Type-0, unlike the two aforementioned titles, it will take place in an original world,” Nomura shares. He then adds that the story will be quite simple; the enemy nation steals a crystal and the protagonists will be retrieving it. Within that, there will be various interactions with other people, which will make it into a Final Fantasy-styled story.

It has been noted that cities of Final Fantasy XV have a European style to them. Nomura shares more regarding the comparison.

Final Fantasy XV’s them is ‘a fantasy based on reality,’ so we’ve used parts of the real world for the picture as a concept,” says the director. “Having the expansion of a fantasy amidst that is a big part of Final Fantasy XV. In order to realize such power of expression, I believed that it could only be done through something close to the hardware of the PlayStation 4.” [Note: This interview as posted on Sony’s PlayStation Community. While on the subject of the next-generation console, Nomura is asked what stood out the most while developing Final Fantasy XV on PlayStation 4.

“From a developer’s point of a view, the most important part of a hardware is the memory,” answers Nomura. “The larger the memory is, the more you can push the limits.”

After being asked to elaborate more on what he means by “pushing the limits,” Nomura elaborates, “The more data you can store in memory, the less loading time there will be, along with the possibility of expanding a game on a much larger scale. As mentioned earlier, in order to depict many cut-scenes in real-time, it is dependant on the size of memory. Again, the number of character motions in battle, and the variety of weapons you can shift through will be high. In terms of having such features take up memory space, I believe that Final Fantasy XV is a perfect fit with the PlayStation 4.”


While it may seem like next-generation consoles will be making things much easier for developers, Nomura also talks about how it has also made things a little tougher.



“There was a Behemoth that appeared in the E3 trailer, well, we actually talked among staff members regarding that Behemoth’s facial expression.” says Nomura. “Up until now, we could get away with just having facial expressions for characters alone, but we’ve entered an era where we even have to work on the monsters’ facials. This means that we’ll have to put in much more detail than ever, from now on.”



Nomura is then asked if there will be any cross-play features between Final Fantasy XVwith PlayStation Vita or smartphones.



“I’d really like to think about some something using mobile devices,” says Nomura. “The PlayStation 4’s ability to connect with external devices really fits today’s era, and it coincides with what we’re trying to do. I believe that nowadays, it is difficult to have someone sit in front of their home consoles for long periods of time, so I believe that we need to have something that allows them to enjoy the world of Final Fantasy XV, while they go out, as well.”



Finally, a message for fans from Tetsuya Nomura:



“Many years have gone by since we first introduced the name of Versus XIII, and because of that, I am aware of the very high expectations you all have for the game. In order to meet those expectations, we, the staff, are all doing our best. Please look forward to it.”


Final Fantasy XV is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Nomura, Kitase and Nojima begin developing FFVII Remake

Sometime in 2014, a decision was made to develop FFVII Remake, this statement from Tetsuya Nomura on June 20, 2015 during E3 2015 confirms this. This proves that Tetsuya Nomura was not removed from FFXV in order to focus on KH3 and FFVII Remake as it was rumored by the fans.. because when Nomura was removed from FFXV in December 2013 at that time FFVII Remake didn't exist!!

Tetsuya Nomura talks about the presence of the Cloud cross-dressing event in the remake of FINAL FANTASY VII. There is no QTE in KINGDOM HEARTS III.

In United States Los Angeles, an exhibition of videogames were held at E3 2015 (Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015). A full remake of FINAL FANTASY VII has been officially announced, and the latest information concerning KINGDOM HEARTS III has been revealed.

As the director of both works, Tetsuya Nomura will be around for us to hear his story and deliver its contents.

FINAL FANTASY VII, Yoshinori Kitase being the producer, Kazushige Nojima the scenario writer, and Tetsuya Nomura being the director held responsible, has been announced to be developed for the PS4. The reveal of “Tangled” has also been announced for KINGDOM HEARTS III. The audience expectations have been heightened.


From around what time did the remake of FINAL FANTASY VII was being undertaken?

Nomura :
It was from last year. Kitase, Nojima, and I just happen to be around at a bad time and gave the name of this announcement. That’s what started the timing.
