English 102 Major Report

Handheld Computers; A Leap Into The Future

Ever since the invention of digital computers back in the 50s the specialists who are interested in developing this technology increased their efforts to bring us more compact and powerful computers that could handle a lot of our needs. Many kinds of computers have been developed over the years and the ultimate goal for the makers is still the same, which is bringing very smart computers in a small chases or containers. The dream has come true when Apple computers established the development of handheld computers by introducing the Newton MessagePad in 1993. New models with improved specifications have come to the industry since then. The most popular type of handheld computers is called PDA, which stands for Personal Digital Assistant. The PDA can be defined as a portable device which can handle many communication & organizing tasks such as emailing, faxing, accessing the internet, playing media files and organizing data using some applications that are coming preinstalled, e.g. calendar, or can be installed later on. The compact size of PDA(s) and their relative affordability make them an attractive alternative to laptops.

Types of Handheld computers
In general the mobile or handheld devices can be classified into three main genres. Limited, Basic or Enhanced Data Mobile Device. The PDA which has the most advanced properties among all other handheld devices is categorized as an enhanced data mobile device. An enhanced data mobile device could be described as a device that has a stylus based navigation scheme, slightly medium to large screens ranging from (240x120 pixels) to (640x480 VGA resolution). It may also include special versions of desktops applications such as Microsoft office set of programs.

In fact the PDA(s) can also be classified but this time into two groups: Palmtops & Handheld PCs
The Palmtops
Usually are less than 5.3 inches tall, 3.2 inches width and .7 inches deep. And they use one of these two operating systems: Palm OS , used on the Palm PDA(s) made by 3Com, Handspring, and Sony Clié. or Pocket PC a Windows based operation system and the companies who are supporting this system are well known and best sellers, Compaq with their iPaq, Hewlett-Packard with their successful device Jornada, and Toshiba whit their smart Pocket PC.

Handheld PCs (HPCs)
These devices include an integrated keyboard and a horizontal rather than vertical screen. They are common these days but because they had an integrated keyboard their sizes and weights are slightly bigger than Palmtops. I-mate JasJar is an example of them.

Although there is a true improvement in the industry of handheld computers but there are some issues that prevent this technology from going any further on so many levels. Ease of use, life of battery and most important connectivity have been under a great consideration of the manufacturers.

Many methods have come into use to make the use of handheld computers much easier. A shining example of that is the use of handwriting reorganization and sound commands but still these techniques have not reached their perfection phase yet.

Many companies are researching and developing new types of batteries that could last longer than the standard lithium batteries that are in use today. And also they are thinking of providing batteries that have the ability to be recharged in a short amount of time.

Day after day our dependence on wireless technology is increasing rapidly. Because of that demand the price of initiating a wireless hotspot in each house will become relatively cheap. To be more exact, in the future almost every chore we will do will depend on the wireless connectivity. More and more huge companies and countries are adopting the use of wireless technology because it will minimize the costs of setting up more expensive connectivity infrastructures using underground cables. Wireless support in portable computers has become a standard in all portable computers available in the market these days. In the next pages you’ll be able to see how PDA(s) with wireless internet access will imply a shift into the future of communication and collaboration with other groups of people in the sectors of education, entertainment, business and daily chores.

Handheld Computers in Education
The handheld computers are finding place in the future of education and portable devices are considered as integrated systems of inquiry. Kids for example can use the interactivity with their handhelds to do a lot of things starting from sketching and coloring to writing and listening to various educational materials. For older students the handheld computers would do them a great favor by providing access to the lectures’ materials using internet or internal or external storage devices rather than carrying bunch of boxes where ever they go. It will also make their access to the student’s community in order to discuss academic issues much simpler whenever and wherever. There’s also a concept that could be used in the future which is about instant grading by using electronic test sheets instead of the physical ones with restrictions that could be imposed to prevent using the wireless medium to cheat. This approach for sure will reduce the amount of time that teachers will spend on correcting the students’ papers even if they were MCQs. The use of handheld computers in education and knowledge extension is not limited to PDA(s). It is also can be used in gaming handheld devices for example this year in Kyoto, Japan the famous company Nintendo which is the vendor of ,the successor of the Game Boy, Nintendo DS brought to us a unique method which represents knowledge and entertainment as complements to each other. Nintendo introduced a way that makes data gathering much joyful by allowing the visitors of Kyoto museum to download a small program to the DS’s memory and whenever they approach a piece of art an interactive menu will appear on the touch screen from which they can navigate and read more extended information about the piece’s history and details. By this way they make young people more interested to visit the museum and enjoy expanding their knowledge using the system that they like. It should be mentioned that Nintendo DS have sold more than 20 million devices since its launch in December 2004. People are thinking of alternative and complements that could make the process of learning more interesting and beloved.

Handheld Computers in Entertainment
There are great expectations that handheld computer will play an important role in the entertainment sector in the future

ما عندي أفكااااار !! أبي Sources

Handheld Computers in Business
It’s known that handheld computers have a high rank as the most efficient devices that can be used in business. That rank will be higher and higher in the future because of the essentiality of using such devices to satisfy business men need of keeping up with the pace of the growing markets and economics by giving them the medium that they could use to do all of their communications.
Video conferencing and VoIP calling are some of the features that are included in some of today’s and excluded in others. But sure in the future they’ll be the industry standards as well as other useful features.

But as we said before if the prices of the wireless technology keep in decreasing we may have a dramatic increase in the use of handheld computers even by small ventures.
