ٌRetro/Active Review
Devil May Cry may not be the oldest franchise in gaming history, but it has, in its relatively short lifespan, garnered one of the most diehard followings ever seen for an action series, and with good reason. Main character, Dante, is the penultimate badass, all leather and chains, swords and six-shooters. He's a heavy metal cowboy leaping straight out of the fires of Hell, and makes nearly all of his contemporary counterparts look weak by comparison. After all, who else do you know that can survive being impaled on his own sword? And that's how his friends treat him. To celebrate Dante's adventures, we've rereviewed the Devil May Cry series, to see how they stack up in an era of God of Wars, Ninja Gaidens, and...Devil May Cry 4. We've even included a couple of his guest appearances, in games like Viewtiful Joe and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Read on and enjoy.

In the spirit of providing info-hungry Devil May Cry fans with all the Dantelicious manna you could drink, we tracked down three of the key creative members of the Devil May Cry 4 development team -- namely producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, director Hideaki Itsuno, and character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa -- and tackled them in the hallway with our binder full of questions.

The result? Information a-go-go and a behind-the-scenes peek at the thought processes that went into DMC4's development. Ever wonder whether the new Devil May Cry 4 engine could or would be put to good use in a new Strider game? Or whether Capcom might ever develop a Lady May Cry video game? Read on to learn everything that's left to know about
Devil May Cry 4.

Devil May Cry 4 Producer: Hiroyuki Kobayashi

1UP: Why does Dante like pizza so much?

Hiroyuki Kobayashi: Because pizza is just that good.

1UP: Dante seems more than ever like a Bruce Willis (Die Hard) type of character in DMC4; confident, but more mature, and cooler-tempered than Nero, yet still tongue-in-cheek. Is this a deliberate personality progression you've created for him, to contrast with the younger, more impetuous Nero?

HK: That's right. It's to give the player a more balanced experience between the rookie Nero and the older veteran Dante.

1UP: Is it our imagination or is Nero really weak with guns? His powered-up gun attacks take a while to charge and don't do too much damage. Was this to steer the focus of his combat toward his sword and Devil Bringer techniques?

HK: I don't think he's weaker at using guns. In fact, once you master the use of his gun, it becomes just as powerful as his other weapons. To clear the more difficult modes, you must be able to effectively use all three of his attacks: his gun, sword, and Devil Bringer.

1UP: By the time you finally get to play as Dante, he seems very powerful from the start. Is this because you wanted to create a tangible difference between Dante and Nero; to establish Dante as the stronger, more powerful veteran?

HK: That is definitely one reason why. Another reason we made Dante so powerful right off the bat is because Dante as a character became really powerful as he progressed through DMC3 and then DMC1, chronologically. Had we taken him down a few notches and make him weak again in DMC4, it would've been very strange. That's why when you get control of him, he can use his 4 styles and his Devil Trigger right away.

1UP: Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions look nearly identical, with the only difference we noticed being the rolling video that plays if you turn on your system and leave it alone. The PS3 version looks clearer. Is that just because the video demo is on Blu-ray on PS3?

HK: The variation is caused by the differences between the compression methods used.

1UP: With the PS3 version, it's mandatory to install it to your harddrive, yet on the Xbox 360 it is not. Why is that? Why wouldn't you just let PS3 owners put it in their console and play off the disc, like how Xbox 360 owners can play, or at least make it an option? On the reverse side, why not offer an install if Xbox 360 owners had enough room on their HD? The load times on 360 are very short in any case, so was any of this really necessary?

HK: Actually, we wanted to do the same thing for the Xbox 360 version, but because there are models of the 360 that are sold without a hard drive, we received a no-go from Microsoft.

1UP: If you have to delete DMC4 off your PS3 HD to make room for new games later on, will you be able to keep your game saves intact if you need to reinstall at a later date?

HK: Yes, you can delete the install files to make room for other games while keeping your saves.

1UP: That's good news. A lot of people will be relieved to hear that. Moving forward, with Nero in the picture, do you see future installments of the series going with Nero or Dante, or both? What about a game where all the female characters from the DMC series get together and just start kicking ass?

HK: We're going to have to wait and see how DMC4 is received before I say anything.

1UP: Will the achievements for DMC4 be the same on both Xbox 360 and PS3?

HK: The achievements and their requirements are exactly the same. Of course, there is no 'Gamer Score' associated with achievements on PS3.

1UP: Will there be downloadable content for DMC4 -- extra costumes, missions, etc. -- like there is for Dead Rising and Lost Planet?

HK: Unfortunately, no.

1UP: Both Nero and Dante have a ton of new fighting styles and attack options -- so much so that it almost seems like they gain new abilities on every level. When did you decide each had received enough power-ups? It feels like you guys went all out in DMC4.

HK: We had pretty much planned out and decided on all of Nero's and Dante's abilities from the very beginning of the development process.

Devil May Cry 4 Director: Hideaki Itsuno

1UP: You were the director on DMC3: Dante's Awakening. What would you say, looking back, were the game's shortcomings, if any?

Hideaki Itsuno: Well to be honest, I would have liked more time to fine-tune the enemies, and there were quite a few stages where it was rather easy to get lost. There was of course the problem of the difficulty being too high in the original release, but we were able to fix that when we released the Special Edition. I think another overall problem was that we did not take newcomers to the series into consideration from the start.

1UP: Having said that, how do you think DMC4 improves on the previous game, beyond the obvious visual and multi-character enhancements?

HI: Well first off I really feel that we have offered up the best Devil May Cry gameplay yet. The combat is deeper and more interesting than it has ever been in the series. This time we were able to really get the enemies fine-tuned as well. I think that thinking not only about fans of the series but also about people who have never played a Devil May Cry game has helped us to create a better game all around for both groups.

1UP: Some of the level design choices are pretty bizarre at times, and while we won't spoil it for our readers, some of Dante's levels reuse Nero's levels to the extreme. What was the decision behind this?

HI: Well that decision has to do with the game's story. Again, I don't want to give anything away, but there are reasons that the characters are in some of the same areas, as I'm sure you know if you have finished the game.

1UP: Dante, compared to Nero, is pretty powerful straight out of the box. That must have been a conscious decision as well. Was it to reward players, perhaps to give them the feeling of satisfaction of finally being able to play as Dante, and to have him be as powerful as they remembered?

HI: That's right. When creating a sequel, you don't want to make a character weak again from the start for no good reason. Everyone wanted to see Dante be just as powerful as they remembered him. We felt it was a good choice for new users as well. Playing the first half of the game as Nero gets the user used to the game, and then when they finally get to play as Dante, they can see why everyone thinks Dante is so cool!

1UP: Instead of having one female character in DMC4, as the previous games had, this one has a few. Was this to keep the men to women ratio balanced for the fans?

HI: Well, we weren't thinking so much about balancing out the roster of characters as much as we just wanted to put a lot of sexy ladies in this game! The more cool guys and sexy ladies the better, right? In addition to the new ladies that help in telling Nero's story, we wanted to show old and new users alike a bit of Dante's complicated relationship with Trish and Lady as well. These scenes in the game should make old fans happy, and I'm also hoping that new fans will become interested in the other games in the series after learning a bit about Dante and his very interesting friends.

1UP: The sense of grandeur and scale in DMC4 is much more significant than in past games, in the way that Nero and Dante battle enemies who would be gods. Tell us a little bit about the inspiration in bringing the series to the next-generation.

HI: When planning this title, we were really excited about all the things we would be able to do with the new hardware. We wanted to show off this huge story and all of its details. Before, we weren't even able to clearly show things like the effect of a demon attack on a city. Of course there are broken, charred cities in the previous games, but we were never able to show demons attacking people and really wreaking havoc before. When we made Devil May Cry 3, we had cut-scenes where five people appeared at once. We couldn't even do that real time; we had to use pre-rendered visuals. We also had the idea of trying to confuse the lines between demons and angels, devils and gods. That has helped to bring originality to this story. The ability to do all of these things was probably the biggest inspiration in making a truly epic story for this game.

1UP: DMC3 was credited with getting the series back on track after DMC2's poor critical reception. What do you attribute that to, and how does DMC4 keep everything going in the right direction?

HI: With 3, we tried to take the best parts of the original game and what we felt were good about 2 and really 'reset' the series. In that sense I think most people would agree that we succeeded in doing that. Having that solid base for the series to build on, we were able to go into the production of Devil May Cry 4 with the goal of raising the quality of the series on all levels.

Making the game accessible for new users as well as satisfying for old fans has been challenging, but it has forced us to make choices that have been really good for the game in the end. This game really is benefiting from all of the trials and hardships that the first three games went through. I personally feel that I have accomplished just about everything I wanted to in a Devil May Cry game with this entry in the series. I don't think there was anything I really wanted to do that I was unable to do this time around.

1UP: The ladies in the game are very well-designed. Are there any plans to put them in a spin-off game?

HI: There actually was a bit of talk about making a game about Lady after Devil May Cry 3 was made. However this didn't get off the ground. It certainly is an interesting idea, but there aren't any plans for such a game at this time.

1UP: Lady May Cry? I'd buy that. That said, are there any Capcom franchises you'd like to apply the DMC4 game engine to, like, say a Strider revival perhaps? The only competition in the action genre for Dante seems to be Ninja Gaiden. If you made a next-gen ninja game with Strider, it'd be all-out war.

HI: Strider is a great classic Capcom game, and I personally think that's a great idea, but do you really think that game would sell? We have to be sure the game will sell before such a project could get off the ground! Wouldn't American gamers prefer a Capcom FPS, or even something like Uncharted? I guess we would have to be more confident that we could sell another character action game, so I hope we continue to hear the opinions of users!

1UP: Since Nero is around now, this doesn't mean you're going to prematurely age Dante and retire him any time in the near future, does it? I mean, disregard the fact that he's hundreds of years old already. [Laughs]

HI: Well nobody knows yet what the future holds for Devil May Cry, but I do think that we have wrapped up the Devil May Cry 4 story in a way that leaves it open for pretty much anything to happen. We could make another game with only Dante, or with only Nero, or perhaps with both of them fighting together in cooperative play...who knows. I guess we will have to wait and see how the fans receive Devil May Cry 4 before we are able to talk about the future of the series.

1UP: The difficulty level in DMC4 is much fairer than in DMC3, which was one of DMC3's biggest drawbacks. How did you go about achieving the right balance in challenge?

HI: We felt that we had addressed that in the Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, so we used that as a base. The difficulty was another place where the experience of Devil May Cry 3 really helped the creation of Devil May Cry 4. I think we have setting that will satisfy players of different tastes all over the world.

1UP: Dante's Pandora is so over the top and awesome that we'd like to know who came up with the idea, how you rationalized it into Dante's arsenal, and anything else that's interesting about it's development.

HI: I wanted to have a transforming, multi-purpose firearm in Dante's arsenal. Something that could be used as an over the shoulder rocket launcher, or a crossbow, etc. In its final form I wanted it to transform into something that would be even bigger than Dante himself. I was thinking about Gundam when I asked for this. I also wanted the weapon to shoot out a lot of small missiles, kind of like some of the fighters in Macross. This was something I was unable to do in Devil May Cry 3. The design team took these requests and really ran with them and put some really awesome, crazy forms into the final weapon; not only things I asked for but their own ideas as well, such as the flash you get when you 'open Pandora's Box.' I'm really happy with how it turned out.

1UP: That said, Dante earns so many cool new things, like the Gilgamesh, that we now want our own personal suit of armor that looks like that. When did you decide that enough was enough, and to stop adding new powers and attacks? What was the limit?

HI: With Dante, we kept playing with his repertoire until quite late in the development process. I'd say the two big limits were the amount of memory we could use for his attacks and all their associated animations and data, as well as the release date of course. We had more ideas that we could fit into the game [Editor's note: Wow.], but I'm really satisfied by the volume and mix of stylish weapons and attacks that Dante has. We weren't able to put absolutely everything that we thought up into the game, for instance we wanted combos to split down different paths based on button press timing, but Dante and the player certainly have more than enough things to do in the first and even the second play through of the game.

Devil May Cry 4 Character Designer: Tatsuya Yoshikawa

1UP: You've worked on a lot of games in the past, some with more obvious, stylized character design than others, like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, which is some of the best game art ever designed. With DMC4, what approach did you take to designing pre-existing characters like Dante, and how did that affect your design of Nero?

Tatsuya Yoshikawa: Well Dante and the Devil May Cry series in general has a very strong image coming from past games. These games have a huge worldwide fan base, and each fan has their own ideas about Dante as well as other characters. When working on this sort of game, the design doesn't come from just one person, it is necessary to take the history of the series and the feelings of the fans into consideration.

Before starting to design my interpretation of these characters, I talked with a lot of people who worked on the previous games to get a good feel for the spirit and traditions of the series. I was trying to give shape to that sense of spirit and tradition in this new game when designing the characters. This meant that Nero needed to fit naturally inside this richly detailed universe, and I think I was able to accomplish this.

Another important consideration is the fact that this is a game where the complex stylish action is the core of the experience. The design is directly connected to the gameplay in this series. I had to think about how to make the characters look very cool when they move. The team members responsible for motion during the game were integral to coming up with the core style for the game.

1UP: When it comes to new character design, what is your criteria and what to you draw inspiration from? Is it fashion, or manga, or movies?

TY: I certainly do draw a lot of inspiration from fashion and manga as well as movies. One great thing about devil May Cry 4 is the incredible increase in the amount of detail we are able to show through the power of next-gen hardware. For this reason, I think that I have tried to draw inspiration from A-class Hollywood films quite a bit. We are now able to achieve the same quality as some of these excellent films, and the challenge of creating that cinematic quality has been really exhilarating. Of course more than anything, the Devil May Cry series itself has inspired the many displays of cool stylish action you will see, and I believe that I have been able to help make this Devil May Cry the best ever.

1UP: Dante's Pandora is such a unique, crazy, over the top weapon. Were you responsible for its design? And if so, what did the team ask for when they presented the idea to you? How did you go about trying to reconcile its many abilities?

TY: Well, the idea for Pandora originally came from the lead animator. He apparently woke up one morning with the idea for this weapon in his head. Since Pandora is Dante's weapon, the lead animator had this idea of somehow putting the attacks of demons that Dante has killed into this mysterious box. If you look at some of Pandora's forms closely, they resemble the attacks of old enemies that Dante has defeated. For my part, I wanted this weapon to have a really huge impact when it was shown, so at first I wanted it to look very unassuming before showing its true power. That is why we went for this ideal of a small suitcase.

1UP: While we're on the topic of weapons, the Gilgamesh 'armor' is also extremely cool. That must have been fun to design.

TY: Yes it was. This idea of a hand-to-hand weapon for Dante was in the plans for the game from the beginning. Up until now, Dante has used swords and other tools to wage war against his demon enemies, but Gilgamesh really highlights Dante's hard, brute strength as he uses it. We really wanted show of Dante's body and how strong he is. We were able to do this by using this mystical metal armor that melds to him. You can see some influence of the popularity of silver jewelry among young Japanese men nowadays in its design as well.

1UP: Which do you enjoy designing more? The ladies or the men? And why? One Capcom character artist we interviewed recently admitted that the women were harder for him to draw. But based on DMC4's character design, as well as other games you've worked on, we'd suspect you have no problems drawing the female characters.

TY: Well, I certainly like to design both men and women characters, but I have to agree that sometimes designing women characters can present more of a challenge that designing men. For me the reason for that is because Capcom games often have a strong male lead character supported by a female secondary character. Once the main is nailed down, it is often even more difficult to come up with a good and well balanced supporting female. Even so, I really do like designing both male and female characters.

1UP: What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered working on DMC4?

TY: I would have to say that Nero was the biggest challenge when working on this game. I've been working here at Capcom for more than ten years, and getting Nero's design just right was one of the biggest challenges I've had as a designer. Dante is such a beloved character, and creating a new character that fans will love to take over the role as the star in this game was very hard, but I'm very pleased with the results.

1UP: The angel type characters are really cool. They feel more like what we imagine 'seraphim' to be than we've seen in any other game before.

TY: Well I'm really happy that you like the angel characters we have created for Devil May Cry 4. I am really proud of how some of these characters turned out. I think my experience at Capcom really helped me to create some interesting things here. When creating games, there is often a request to "make something cool" and my experience has helped me to create designs that are not simply cool in their own right, but cool in the context of the game that they will be appearing in. In the case of Devil May Cry 4, the idea of a religious order brings up a lot of ideas for characters, and the pure, clean image of an angel is very interesting in the world of devil May Cry as well. I was able to really make the angels look cool when contrasted to the equally cool demons of the game. These characters are some of my favorite in the game, and I'm really pleased that you like them!

1UP: DMC4's enemies come in both big and small sizes, from Berial's immense size to the tiny monsters you fight on regular levels. Are the big bosses the most enjoyable, and which of the game's many bosses is your favorite and why?

TY: [WARNING: Possible spoiler alert!] Designing bosses is certainly a lot of fun, but at the same time it can be a difficult as designing a main character! As I mentioned earlier, the design of Devil May Cry 4 is so closely connected to the gameplay, and that is fact is most apparent when designing enemies. You have to think about how the player will approach each enemy you create. Bosses are really fun but difficult to design as a result. If I had to pick a favorite boss in the game, I think it would be Credo's Angel form. That boss really came together very nicely. I also really like Berial, he is so strong and cool.

1UP: What do you think makes Dante such a cool character? And is there any difference in how Capcom presents him now than when he was first unleashed on the gaming world?

TY: When I played the first Devil May Cry game, I loved the way Dante could handle himself in any situation. He is the ultimate Hollywood action superstar. No matter how many demons are trying to kill him, he always is able to win in the end, save the pretty girl and finish with a wisecrack.

For me he really has the image of the coolest possible guy. In this installment we really wanted to make Dante the coolest guy in the world, so first the team asked, "what makes a man cool?" and the answer was well, men are really cooler, stronger and wiser when they are a bit older, perhaps in their 30s or 40s. At that age they have a lot of experience, and if they have kept in shape, a slightly older man can be very strong. We wanted to show Dante at this cool experienced stage. Even small details like Dante's stubble adds a bit to his character. Dante isn't the kind of guy who worries about whether he has shaved every day. He's the type of guy who can roll out of bed and take on a horde of demons, without looking in the mirror. In this way we were able to evolve Dante's image in devil May Cry 4.

1UP: Do you ever feel like some of your designs don't get enough exposure? Like Ryu's final 'dragon' form from BOF: Dragon Quarter, which -- by the way -- would have made an excellent secret form for either Dante or Nero.

TY: Although I certainly appreciate fans who like my work, I think the most satisfying thing to me as a game character designer is not people casually looking at my designs and liking them but rather having fans enjoy the whole experience of the game. Games that focus only on graphics design often feel like they have no "backbone", so I try to approach design while thinking about all the game elements. As a designer I want fans to be reassured about a game's design when they find out that I am designing the characters, and so I do want more gamers to know my work.

1UP: When you're drawing in your spare time, what sort of art do you like to sketch?

TY: Well I like to draw a variety of subjects. I like to draw people and characters of course, animals, robots, landscapes, lots of things. I guess I really like drawing natural things the most, things like animals or people. Lately I have been interested in drawing the clothes on the characters that I draw.

1UP: As we can tell from the immense detail in Nero and Dante's costumes. Thanks for your time. Good luck on whatever your next project may be!

1up <tgman>

(Breath of Fire )

Joe.
