About "Yashigani Hofuru"
Those of us who never saw Lost Universe in its original broadcast run on TV Tokyo would never know it, but the fourth broadcast episode (moved to twelfth for home video release), ヤシガニ屠る Yashigani Hofuru (Feasting on Coconut Crab), was plagued with problems the first time it aired on April 24, 1998. At the time, a number of studios were rushing to complete episodes for around sixty to seventy different anime series- thirty is usually considered the maximum before quality starts to drop. A South Korean animation studio, San Ho Studio, was contracted to do the animation for the fourth episode of Lost Universe. However, the studio only received the basic outlines of the characters, and the animators did not have sufficient time to practice drawing them correctly.
The resulting episode was an embarrassment to the Japanese staff of Lost Universe. First, the opening animation was not complete. The Japanese staff had to insert banners stating "a work in progress" and "under construction" to attempt to make up for what had (not) been done. The animation in the episode itself was terrible. Frames did not move smoothly- at some points, characters would simply jump across the screen instead of going through the frames required to walk or run there. The characters themselves were also animated very poorly, and people and structures in the background were even shoddier.
