Bleach DS

August 17, 2005 - Bleach may be one of Japan's hottest animes right now, but its videogame track record is pretty spotty, with some questionable licensed titles from Sony for the PS2 and PSP. Sega's recent Game Boy Advance adaptation has had a better reception, but it looks like the real game will begin on the DS with Treasure and Sega's Bleach: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei. IGN got a chance to try out the title at the recent Jump World event in Tokyo.

Sega had the game (and English-speaking support staff, surprisingly) set up at the show exclusively in four player form. We were able to chose from four characters, but observed eighteen character slots, suggesting a rather large cast -- certainly much larger than the five playable characters that made it into Sony's questionable first PSP attempt.

As mentioned in our initial coverage of the game, this latest Bleach adaptation is a two-plane fighter. We were able to familiarize ourselves with the fighting system through our play test. The game features two main attack buttons, one for strong attack and one for weak. The R shoulder button is used for guarding with L used to switch between planes. The two remaining face buttons are used for locking yourself on to an enemy and for dashing. You jump by pressing up and can also make your character perform a double jump.

All the fighting is viewed on the top screen. The touch panel is used to call up special moves and support items. The character we used had a couple of power ups, displayed on the touch screen via panels that players are meant to press with their fingers. One of our two items increased attack strength with the other increasing our character's dash power. The touch panel also houses special move panels, giving you quick access to four special moves and a single super special move with a quick hot key press. Special moves can also be achieved in the normal way via button combinations.

The fighting system in Bleach is fast and responsive, even when going the touch panel route for special attacks. The game is full of aerial moves and anime cut-ins, making for an exciting, albeit occasionally confusing fight. Those who've played Treasure's celebrated Yu Yu Hakusho Mega Drive fighter will be pleased to know that, compared to that game, it's a bit tougher to switch planes in order to get out of a jam in Bleach.

One striking feature of the game is its use of zooming. Similar to classic Neo Geo titles and recent 2D fighters such as the Guilty Gear series, the screen zooms in for close-ups when all the characters are packed together and zooms out as players separate. The camera gets surprisingly close to the fighters, showing off crystal-clear spites that take up more than half the vertical expanse of the screen (the sprites are naturally drawn this large). This is a cool feature to see in a DS title, and combined with all the effects used for special attacks, makes for a game that truly makes use of the DS's power, as opposed to many of the other anime fighters for the system that seem to be just Game Boy Advance engines running with touch screen support.

Our early play test of Treasure's DS Bleach adaptation, coupled with our memories of four player Yu Yu Hakusho (one of the best reasons to own a Mega Drive multi-tap), have us wanting to get our hands on the final product for full four-player matches. Sega plans a Japanese release on January 26 of next year.

Dragon Ball Z

August 17, 2005 - Following the questionable Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu, Atari redeemed itself with last year's Supersonic Warriors, an adaptation of the cartoon series that stayed much truer to the source material. All of this was for the Game Boy Advance, of course. The hot ticket in town now is the DS, though, and Goku and crew are turning their attention to the new portable via a true sequel to Supersonic Warriors. The game appeared under its Japanese name of Dragon Ball Z: Bukuu Ressen at the recent Jump World event in Tokyo, giving us a chance to get some hands-on time.

If you've seen Supersonic Warriors, you'll know what to expect from Bukuu Ressen. The sequel features a similar air-based fighting engine, with buttons used for weak, strong and special (spirit) attacks. You're free to move around through the air, which can feel a bit strange at first if you're used to ground-based fighters.

The fighting system has been expanded due to the DS's added buttons and touch panel features. You now select a fighting team consisting of three warriors and call them out into battle by selecting them from panels on the touch screen. In the team we sampled at Jump World, we were able to switch between two of the fighters, with the third being reserved for quick support attacks. The three characters can also be made to team up for a combo Dragon Power attack, also selectable via the touch screen.

With Bukuu Ressen, it appears that Bandai has put some effort into making use of the DS's features outside of the gimmicky touch panel support. The game's backgrounds, already impressive on the Game Boy Advance, now feature polygonal elements. The game still moves somewhat choppy, so we're hoping Bandai will be able to clean things up for the final release.

We were only able to try out a fighting demo at the show, but the game will also feature strong story elements. Players will be able to experience an original scenario for each character, meaning those caught up in the cartoon's storyline will want to take a look.

In Japan, Dragon Ball Z will hit the DS later this year. A US release through Atari should follow. Check out the images section below for a scan of a pamhplet that was handed out at Jump World.

Vandel vs Busters

August 17, 2005 - The Bouken-Ou Beet anime/comic has already made its way to the videogame screen on the PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance. For the third adaptation, Bandai has announced a DS title, Bouken-Ou Beet: Vandel vs Busters. This "tactical action RPG" went on display for the first time at the recent Jump World event in Tokyo.

Vandel vs Busters makes you (the player) into the main character. In an effort to protect the peace on Futago Shima (Twin Island), you take on the dangerous role of a Buster and head off on a journey. You're a part of the "Busters" of the title, with the Vandels being the baddies against whom you're fighting. The main characters, including your twin childhood friends Lena and Zena, have been designed by Kouji Inada.

Making use of the DS's twin screen setup, Vandel vs Busters places most of the action on the top screen. Here, you view the game's battles in real time as you attempt to defeat the emerging Vandels and monsters with combo attacks. The bottom screen displays status information and commands, allowing you to select strategies with a quick touch.

Bandai is aiming for a November Japanese release date for this third Bouken-Ou Beet title. We've uploaded a scan of the game's Jump World pamphlet for those wanting a closer look.
