DICE (Sweden) - Stay away for the time being
Good work hours and pay. Production figured out a better alternative to crunching that is much easier on the body. Of course, sometimes overtime still has to happen but at least it was bearable (and unfortunately still mostly fell on the engineers...
Cronyism and nepotism are huge problems. The previous generation of leadership is reaching retirement age and began passing the torch over a year ago. How they selected the current generation is not clear but it isn't working at all. What features make it into the game or get development time isn't dependent on how they'll improve the game but on who has your back. This is especially troublesome because current leadership, or rather the couple of people at the top, is obsessed with executing their vision at the expense of everything else
DICE (Sweden) Game Developer Reviews
4 DICE (Sweden) reviews. A free inside look at company reviews and salaries posted anonymously by employees.
- It is quite sad to say but DICE has officially become an EA studio.
- The people and passion that innovated and pushed for quality and that built the older games are now gone. What is left is an exoskeleton of what was one of the most innovative studios in the world.
- It has become a conveyor belt of the brand that is Battlefield. Churning out the same title bi-year after bi-year. what the players are buying now is not battlefield, but instead an EA hijacked memory of what battlefield was or what it could be. instead of looking how to improve the gameplay for the players, monetization is dictating the direction to go with the game unfortunately.
- The devs aren't really making the game. Decisions (a lot of which are not good) are made top down and the talent are left devoid of innovation. outsourcing has become a big problem too.
- Management and leadership are for the most part, clueless
- The leaders don't want to hear any feedback that isn't positive, and this includes constructive criticism. Instead, they ignore all the red flags people have been waving at them. Instead they say the same corporate soundbites and pretend everything is fine.
- They rarely promote real talent and its extremely difficult to get a salary raises.
- If you are the creative type and still have the hunger to create magic, steer well clear.
DICE (Sweden) - Fun workplace, clunky engine
The people at least in my team are excellent and fun to work with. The problems you face as an engineer are challenging and at the forefront of the industry. Working with something you like is fun.
The engine is very unstable, things break everywhere all the time.
The infrastructure is a bit iffy, for example we just have 1 branch for a game, with everyone essentially pushing to master, and then the latest version to use isn't head (which is always broken) but rather the last successful nightly build which you get with a script
