With Nelson Dida seemingly set to be released on a free transfer, and doubts still remaining over the ability of Zeljko Kalac, Milan have identified the signing of a new goalkeeper as their primary transfer target this summer.
A host of names have been linked with a move to San Siro, most notably Fiorentina’s Sebastien Frey, Celtic’s Artur Boruc, and PSV Eindoven’s Heurelho Gomes.
Latest reports in Italy suggest that Milan are now set to table a huge offer to Chelsea for Czech shot-stopper Petr Cech. Last week, Cech’s agent Pavel Zika, told Czech newspaper Pravo that a big European club were ready invest heavily in his client.
Zika said: "I know quite a large European club is ready to pay over 30 million euros for Petr Cech. It is an important sum for a goalkeeper. At the end of the season, we will consider the current contract of Petr and see whether we can improve it."
While many believe that these statements were intended as a bargaining chip into contract negations, reports in Italy insist that Milan are serious about signing Cech.
The 25-year-old, who has won 56 caps for his country, is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The Portuguese coach believes that if such luminaries as Lippi can wait for a job that he really wants then there is no reason why he cannot do the same and stated that if the right post is not on offer then he will remain out of the game.
After being linked to various high profile jobs like Inter, AC Milan and Barcelona, Mourinho has now confirmed that he has not made an agreement with anyone and is waiting to see what is on offer.
”The perfect example is Marcello Lippi,” he told A Bola. “He won the World Cup with Italy and at the moment he is not working because he is waiting for the club of the right size.
”I am not prepared to enter into a group that are of medium standing. I will work for a top club or not. I have no desire to take a rush back.

The former Juventus and Benfica striker has revealed his desire to return to his former club and Zamparini is ready to show him the Renzo Barbera door.
Miccoli has not played much and he has been under Amauri's shadow for most of the season. The Rosanero chief is not bothered, in fact he wants the striker to leave.
"Miccoli wants to go back to Lecce, this is what he told me," Zamparini told Stadio News.
"I do not want players who are not motivated and who do not want to stay at Palermo."
The outspoken chief also had a few words on Amauri's long running transfer saga.
"We were very close to reaching a deal with Juventus but then Milan showed up. "Foschi (Palermo's chief executive) will be meeting with the Juve directors this week, Amauri will do well at either club."
It seems as if a number of players are jumping ship in the Sicilian port city, Zaccardo, Barzagli and Amauri are all on their way out as well as Miccoli.
The Rosanero will need to ensure they replace such high calibre players if they are to be competitive next season.

The Brazilian full-back has concluded a deal with the Blaugrana and is set to remain in Spain after the end of the campaign to be close to the negotiations between the two clubs when they take place.
After the local derby against Real Betis at the weekend, Alves stated that he had thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Sánchez Pizjuán, but knew that one day he would have to leave.
"These have been five brilliant years with Sevilla and I knew that this moment would come. This is my destiny and I have to accept that is how things are," he told Onda Cero radio station.
"I hope to be able to say goodbye to the fans on a positive note."
According to Sport, the 25-year-old has set his heart on being a key member of Pep Guardiola's revolution at Camp Nou and will pen a four-year deal if Sevilla accept the Catalan club's offer.
Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been linked with the highly-rated full-back, but they all appear to have lost out.
There were reports that Alves was going to join Barça in 2006, a year after a first option clause was given to the Blaugrana after they lent Javier Saviola to Sevilla.

They have already signalled their intent by signing Palermo full back Cristian Zaccardo, and the club are now said to be close to capturing his club team-mate Andrea Barzagli.
Barzagli is widely regarded as one of the top centre backs in Italy, and he will be travelling to Euro 2008 with the Azzurri hoping to add another major international honour to the World Cup winners medal he won with Zaccardo at Germany 2006.
Last week Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini confirmed that the 26-year-old will be departing Sicily in the summer, and there has been heavy interest from both Bayern Munich and Fiorentina.However it seems that Wolfsburg are ready to outbid both of these clubs, by offering more than €15m for the player.
They are also prepared to draw up a four-year contract worth a cool €8m.
