Earlier this month rumors began circulating about the possibility of Sony showing off a brand new PSP at this year's E3 -- not just a new iteration of the existing series, but a brand new device – the fabled PSP 2. Reports today, however, suggest that the new handheld will not be making its debut at the show, but maintain that it is real, and will arrive later this year.
VG247 reported today that Sony's long-rumored successor to the PSP is unlikely to be shown at E3, and is expected to debut at Tokyo Game Show or GamesCom later this year. The site went on to detail the purported features of the new device; specifically that it will feature two cameras, a touch-screen display, and will feature a four-core Cell processor. While we have heard chatter about camera integration and touch-screen controls in the past, the four-core processors is a fairly new addition to the rumor mill. The inclusion of a powerful four-core processing system would be a large boost over current iterations, and to it put into perspective, is about half the power of the PS3, which runs on an eight-core variation.
Speaking in regards to reports today, IGN's own sources have provided similar information regarding the PSP 2, saying that it is, in fact, real and that an E3 reveal is possible, but unlikely due to the system's current stage of development and the competition posed by Nintendo's 3DS. We've also learned that the PSP 2 may incorporate dual analog sticks as well, a feature many fans have been clamoring for since the system originally launched in 2005.
