Since she slew monstrous Chiropterans with ease in ‘60s Japan – chronicled in Production I.G’s 2000 hit Blood: The Last Vampire (released by Manga Entertainment) – Saya has had a lot going on. She’s suddenly living in the present day, she’s lost her memory of her powers and of Chiropterans, and she’s turned into quite the cutie – but as Blood+ quickly shows, she hasn’t lost any of her powers, and the world is in no less danger from creatures of the night.

As Blood+ debuts on Adult Swim on March 11th at 12:30 a.m. EST, animeOnline, with help from Japanese producer Aniplex, hunted down director Junichi Fujisaku for an exclusive interview to help fill in the gaps between The Last Vampire and Blood+. Then, we cornered Sony Pictures Television on how they’ll handle the U.S. adaptation (check it out on page 2). There’s no question that Saya is ready for America – but is America ready for Saya?

Why do you feel Blood: The Last Vampire was so popular?
FUJISAKU: Saya. She’s a character who hunts monsters, the Chiropterans, who have been lurking in the darkness throughout the ages – and she doesn’t fight them with guns or grenades, but rather a Japanese sword. A tragic heroine, destined to fight, wielding a katana…why wouldn’t this series be popular? And I also happen to believe Blood+ is also an animation that’s incredibly well-made, with a well-told story.

For U.S. fans of Blood: The Last Vampire, how is Blood+ connected to the original movie?
FUJISAKU: Actually, there is no direct relation. It’s the same set-up - a girl called Saya hunts “Chiropterans,” which is the same as the movie, but from there it is developed as a whole new tale. The Blood+ story was targeted at a lower age group, using the same premise of a girl fighting monsters, but adding more characters so that a television series could be created.

How would you summarize the plot of the series for U.S. fans?
FUJISAKU: The Chiropterans, creatures born from the world’s darkness, and Saya Otonashi, a girl who has lost all of her memories, are brought together to battle. Saya is a normal girl - although she dislikes fighting, she knows that the ghastly beings called Chiropterans cannot be simply ignored, and it is her destiny to fight them. She will leave her home of Okinawa for destinations across the world to battle them, and from there her story will begin to unfold.

The original movie was set in the ‘60s. Why was it decided for Blood+ to be set in the present?
FUJISAKU: The staff that participated in the planning of Blood+ decided it. This setting better suited the story we were trying to tell, with its themes of war and trust.

Saya’s character design has changed dramatically from the original Blood: The Last Vampire film. Why was this choice made?
FUJISAKU: We wanted to make it easy for audiences to get into, so we “renewed” Saya to be a different character from the movie version. We also really wanted to contrast the dark, damp Saya of the movie by having the TV version star a bright, cheerful girl.

Besides the setting and the character design, what else has changed for Blood+?
FUJISAKU: The setup of Saya’s character was slightly changed. Thus now the story is not just about slaughtering and killing Chiropterans, but how the blood of Saya is necessary to kill them. This in turn adds a layer of mystery to the Chiropterans.

There seems to be a much more epic back-story for Saya in Blood+. How much of this was known when creating Blood: The Last Vampire?
FUJISAKU: When the movie version came out, the only plot element was that Saya hunted Chiropterans… and that was all that was decided on. After reading the various Blood novels – including Mamoru Oshii’s novel – we met and discussed what we could add to that premise for the TV series. In the end, for the most part, we decided to give Blood+ new content.

What can you tell us about the new character Hagi? Why does he follow her and obey her so completely?
FUJISAKU: I wanted to emphasize that even though they are not family, they have a contract which is like a relationship by blood. And yet Hagi doesn’t just protect Saya due to this contract; might he also be doing so due to a form of love?

We know the characters in the show travel from Okinawa all over the world –Vietnam, Russia, London, New York…did you get to travel to any of these places for research?
FUJISAKU: I’ve only actually been able to explore Okinawa, but I would like to travel to all these locations.

Hagi plays cello, other characters sing, and there’s obviously a great focus on the music. Why this focus on classical music?
FUJISAKU: Even as the times change and generations change, classical music will never change. And thus this form of music was chosen to give Blood+ depth, while still developing the story.

Have you heard the English dub of the series? If so, do you have any thoughts on it?
FUJISAKU: I’ve been so busy I haven’t had the chance to hear it. However, I did get to express my opinion while people were deciding on who to cast, and evaluating audition tapes.

A live-action film based on Blood: The Last Vampire is in the works. Will it work with the other Blood chronicles, or will it just be a remake of the movie?
FUJISAKU: The rule about Blood is that it has to have Saya and the Chiropterans, but the take is up to the creator’s freedom of direction for plot. Some things have been added to the movie.

What do you think of the casting of Korean actress Ji-hyun Jun as Saya?
FUJISAKU: Seeing as she is one of the more competent actresses around, I’m quite pleased by the choice.

There’s a rumor that Production I.G originally intended to do a film sequel to Blood, instead of a TV series. Is this true?
FUJISAKU: This is the first I’ve heard of that. It was always planned to be a TV series, at least since I was appointed as a supervisor on the project.

Is there a possibility of another animated Blood movie or TV series?
FUJISAKU: If the series explodes in popularity and becomes a hit, and fans shout out for more of the new Saya, wouldn’t you assume Production I.G would consider it? I would like to see more too!

الأنمي كان تجربة فريدة على الرغم من أن قصص الفامبايرز مستهلكة بشدة ..
حبكته عميقة و مستواه الرسومي ما يحتاج شهادة أحد ..
Sequel ؟ أتمنى الأستوديو ما يصدر جزء ثاني إذا كان ما يقدر يوصل شي بجودة الجزء الأول ..
