Sega Sammy Holdings has posted a 31% increase in net income for the fiscal year ended March 31, thanks to strong videogame and arcade machine sales.
The company posted a net profit of 66.2 billion yen ($602.5 million), compared to 50.6 billion yen ($460.5 million) for the previous year. Solid sales of arcade units coupled with home entertainment software sales made up for Sammy Corp.'s weakened pachinko slot machine business.
Operating profit in the consumer games division was 2 billion yen ($18 million) compared to an 8.8 billion yen ($80 million) loss from a year prior. The dismally reviewed Shadow the Hedgehog led the way with sales exceeding 1 million units. Video game software unit sales came in at 16.4 million for the year.
Over the past year, Sega took steps to work towards profitability, which included selling its sports-centric studio Visual Concepts, and acquiring studios Secret Level and Sports Interactive. In early May 2005, just prior to the start of the most recent fiscal year, Sega acquired Rome: Total War developer Creative Assembly.
For the fiscal year ahead, Sega expects net profit of 75 billion yen ($682.4 million) and sales of 682 billion yen ($6.2 billion).
At E3 last week, Sega showed off a slew of games that the company hopes will play a role in reaching its future targets. Some of the most notable upcoming titles include Phantasy Star Universe, Yakuza, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Medieval 2: Total War and Virtua Fighter 5; the last of which will serve as a sales generator in both Sega's arcade and consumer software segments.
Of course, Sonic is back on a mission with two full-blown next generation Sonic titles (Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Wild Fire) and Sonic Rivals for PSP.
On Monday, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said that Sega is one of the few third party publishers that are well-positioned to take advantage of any early Wii hardware sales.

Finally, in the consumer business, the SEGA SAMMY Group will take aggressive corporate restructuring and business expansion measures. To boost the development of the console business in growing overseas markets, the Group plans to purchase competitive titles and brands, and acquire overseas development companies to obtain advanced development capabilities. For fiscal 2006, the Group is projecting total game software sales of 6.7 million copies in Japan, 6.3 million in the U.S., and 8.9 million in Europe, for a total of over 21.9 million copies. In addition, the Group is determined to bolster its mobile phone content and toy businesses by mustering resources across the Group
