Free DS Rentals For Train Riders in Japan
System being used to draw passengers to rail.
by John Tanaka
February 7, 2008 - Videogame rentals are a no-no in Japan, but it seems that Nintendo is making an exception for JR East Japan. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun online edition, the rail firm will soon start the Nozomi X DS Campaign, a program through which riders on the Shinkansen bullet train between Hiroshima and Tokyo will be able to rent a DS unit for free.
JR East has implemented this program in order to mask one of the weaknesses its rail-based transport option has against airlines on the long route. Currently, a flight between Hiroshima and Tokyo takes one and a half hours, faster than the four hours required for rail. As a result, the rail option has managed to grab just 45% of the market.
This campaign will last from February 14 through March 28. JR will make only 20 systems available per day. Participants will be able to select two games from a total of eight types, and will be able to keep the gear for a three day period.
