One of the last major new releases slated to ship in 2006 is Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, a sequel to 2004's memorable Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Two aspects of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops immediately stand out. One is that the in-game visuals look comparably as good as those of Snake Eater for the PS2, which was hailed as one of the best-looking PS2 games at the time.
The other is the cinematic cutscenes
Each character, including Snake, is rated differently across more than 10 different attributes, which may naturally predispose them to certain types of tasks--for instance, sniping or close-quarters combat.
it's an affecting moment, thanks partly to an unmistakably familiar delivery by voice actor David Hayter, reprising his role as Snake
Konami promises more than 20 hours of single-player gameplay in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which features a new strategic gameplay layer that lets you undertake optional side missions as well as core story missions.
These types of minor refinements may help make the gameplay easier to grasp, or better suited to the PSP's form factor.
While the story will be told in an unusual fashion, the comic book style of its cutscenes really impressed us, and what we saw of the dialogue and plot sequences seemed consistent with Snake Eater's high standards for storytelling. The core gameplay itself seems to have been translated nicely to the PSP,

8.0 Presentation
Portable Ops manages to meld the flavor of Snake Eater with the strategic elements of Acid to make a completely new title.
8.5 Graphics
The Subsistence Engine transitions over to the PSP extremely well. Slowdown, texture tears and camera issues hamper it though.
9.0 Sound
Excellent voice acting is paired with a great soundtrack to make an excellent aural experience.
9.0 Gameplay
Recruiting soldiers is amazingly deep, and you can literally spend hours on end building your forces and taking on sub-missions.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Ad Hoc, Infrastructure and Cyber Survival, along with recruiting, will easily keep this UMD in PSPs for a long time.
9.0
Outstanding OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

How close to an actual Metal Gear Solid game is this in terms of gameplay? Or is it somewhere in between Acid and the original 3?
Ryan Payton: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (MPO) has no relation to the Acid series. One of the first steps in developing MPO was to place the existing MGS3: Subsistence engine on PSP -- so what you're getting here is a brand new game built off of the Subsistence infrastructure. Everything that you'd come to expect in a MGS title -- sneaking, first-person view, CQC, using enemies as shields... it's all present
IGN: Approximately how long is the campaign the 1st time through?
Ryan:
The game has dozens of these sub-missions, and I encourage everybody to play all the sub-missions to get rare weapons (RPG-7, Mosin-Nagant) and unique characters. But to answer your question, I think a normal playthrough of the game will consist of 15 to 20 hours.
The cool thing is how the single and multiplayer modes are totally integrated, thus prolonging the life of the campaign mode. Online is accessible from the campaign mode for good reason -- players bring one of their 1P Sneaking Units to the online arena. Good players will form a balanced (four person) team filled with unique characters, snipers, handgun experts, etc. In order to put together the strongest, most balanced team, players will need to return to the single-player campaign to recruit new characters including our hard-to-get boss characters.
IGN: Is there an official soundtrack?
Ryan: The official soundtrack is coming to Japan. It's a forty-four track, beast of a soundtrack. Norihiko Hibino, best known for his composition of the Snake Eater theme, is back with some really cool tracks for MPO.
.....
because we really think we've gone way beyond any gamer's expectations for a portable game soundtrack.
IGN: Are there plans to port Portable Ops to the PS2, in the event that the game receives poor sales on the PSP?
Ryan: Absolutely not !!!
IGN: Will there be sequels if this proves to be the PSP's killer app?
Ryan: Absolutely. If the response to MPO is as good as we're expecting, you can look forward to new chapters in the Big Boss legacy on PSP. We still have many stories to tell about the early years of Metal Gear Solid -- I hope we can continue to do that on PSP
