It was our first time in the Duke of York’s cinema. We booked our tickets for the 2:30 pm screening of The Master (Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of the modern classic “There Will Be Blood”). After 20 minutes of fucking annoying commercials and trailers, the movie finally started!
Set in the 1950s, the movie started with our protagonist, Freddie Quell (Phoenix), when he was a US Marine during WWII. After completing his service, Freddie returns to the States with many personal problems: Alcoholism, anger issues and sexual oppression. He works as a photographer for some time before quitting the business and joining a local cult called The Cause, led by the charismatic Master (Hoffman). This is when the story really begins…
Phoenix gives the performance of a lifetime here, while Hoffman gives a powerful performance as the leader of The Cause. Amy Adams gives another convincing performance as the calm yet strong wife of The Master.
Backed with beautiful cinematography and a haunting score (An essentials in a PTA film), the mood is set right. The movie is a critique of Scientology as The Cause is a direct reference to the early cults of Scientology. However, being from countries that are not familiar with Scientology, we found the subject boring and hard to swallow. Another main issue with the story and the film in general is that it doesn’t have a particular “focus”. Scenes keep shifting focus from one another. One scene the story appears to be about Freddie and his many problems. The other scene, the story is about The Master and his struggles with keeping The Cause intact. I should note that there was an unnecessary scene with absolutely disgusting full-frontal nudity that really made us think “What the hell they were thinking?”.
The conclusion is another weak point. The movie has no “satisfying” conclusion. Characters have zero development. They finish the film the same condition they started with. We left the theatre with a bitter taste of disappointment.
Bottom line: A well-acted drama from an acclaimed director with a story that could have been much better.
