We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.
Sony has sent word that a new, mandatory PlayStation 3 firmware update (version 3.61) is now live. It is strongly recommended (by us, too!) that you change your password once prompted following the download and installation of the firmware.
According to Sony's Eric Lempel, the update is meant to prepare for the re-activation of PSN. This does not mean that PSN is fully operational -- not yet.
Sony has announced it has released a new firmware update for PlayStation Network, and the mandatory install is the first step in the restoration of services.
According to a post over the US PS Blog, online services will resume later today after being brought offline on April 19, making it just shy of an entire month without service.
According to the blog post, update 3.61 is mandatory and as soon as you log into PSN, here is what you need to do:
If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

Sony is currently working with various law enforcement agencies to find the culprits who hacked into the PS networks, and hacker group Anonymous has admitted that some of its members may have gone rougue and caused the servers to be brought down without support from the full collective.
Sony was expecting to bring more services online at the end of last week, but delayed the launch until it felt better security measures had been implemented. Hopefully, tonight’s firmware update is a step in the right direction.
You can read the full statement from Sony through any of its PS Blogs.
VG247 was informed that partial services to PSN would be restored later today, Sunday for you European folks, so stay tuned, and we will let you know as soon as it happens.
