Sonic creator Yuji Naka and head of Sega Studio USA Takashi Iizuka accompanied the hedgehog to a nine set match featuring Japanese wrestling league Pancrase. Keeping with the game's theme, Shadow walked around the ring posing and climbing the ropes, and during the 6th match, Shadow became the excited announcer. In the end, Shadow awarded the night's winner with a prize of ten games from Sega's back catalogue.
After the match, Iizuka commented the wrestling match was a promotion you couldn't do with Sonic. Talking in front of an audience of wrestling fans, Iizuka said "We've made a game that even those who haven't played a Sonic game can enjoy. So, please give it a try."
Yuji Naka later commented on the design of the game. "We had received letters from kids, and many of them had asked for Sonic to have a gun," he said. "We felt that it was not appropriate for Sonic to have a gun, but maybe it would be ok with Shadow and that's how we started on the game."
