Atsutoshi Nishida, the new president of Toshiba Corp., pledged continued efforts Friday to create a unified format for next-generation DVDs although negotiations between two format groups have been bogged down.
"We will continue efforts" to unify the two formats "for the sake of users," Nishida said in an interview with Kyodo News.
Toshiba is leading a group of companies supporting the HD-DVD format for DVDs, while the other group, headed by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., is promoting a standard called Blu-ray.
The two groups have failed to iron out differences and have held no negotiations since last month.
While Toshiba is willing to create a unified standard, the issue "should not be settled through top management's near-term political judgment," said the 61-year-old Nishida, who took the helm of the company on Friday.
The two groups "should deepen technological studies so as to realize a unification as the best format," he added, indicating Toshiba's intention of negotiating with the Blu-ray group on a long-term basis.
Toshiba plans to release a DVD player in the HD-DVD format by the end of this year, while Sony and Matsushita intend to release products in the Blu-ray standard.
While some worry that the sales plans by the companies will throw an element of confusion into the DVD market, Nishida said the Blu-ray group's insistence on a unified format based on its own technology "leaves no room for negotiations."
Referring to an ongoing joint project between Toshiba and Canon Inc. to develop a surface-conduction electron-emitter display, meanwhile, Nishida said the new technology will become a "big weapon" to capitalize on "huge replacement demand for television sets, which will be recreated through a global shift toward digital broadcasting."
With the next-generation DVD and SED technologies, Toshiba hopes to triple sales of image-processing equipment to 1.5 trillion yen in fiscal 2010, according to Nishida.
