Microsoft is aiming to shift 10 million Xbox 360s worldwide in its first year on sale, according to a top executive.
Speaking at the ELSPA International Games Summit today in London, Peter Moore, corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing, said that his target was to sell 10 million 360s around the world in the "first 12 to 16 months of launch."

The Xbox 360 is expected to launch across the globe this November, although Microsoft is yet to announce an official date.

To put Moore's figure into context, it took three years for Microsoft to sell 20 million Xboxes worldwide. Moving 10 million in a single year would be a stunning feat for the company and would truly signal Microsoft's arrival as a true competitor to Sony's dominance.

But it's not impossible - last year alone, Sony shifted 16 million PS2s around the world.
Moore's comments also suggest that the 360's pricepoint will be aggressive enough to encourage consumers to buy the console at launch. Xbox head honcho J Allard has suggested a 360 price "in the neighbourhood" of $299, around £160.

In contrast, the original Xbox came with a prohibitive pound;299 pricetag in the UK, which quickly dropped as sales stalled.

It's not the first time Microsoft execs have chucked staggering numbers around. At Microsoft's pre-E3 conference it was claimed that the console would touch 'one billion people' by ushering in the HD era.

Peter Moore's bold '10 million in first year' statement trumped by analysts - but PS3 will still lead the next-gen pack

It's the second time in as many days that dizzying 360 sales figures have been thrown around. Yesterday Xbox's corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing, Peter Moore, spoke of how he aimed to shift 10 million of the consoles in its first "12 to 16 months".

The Xbox 360 is expected to launch around the world in November this year.

But, according to the report compiled by US analysts at Kagan Research, these sales figures will not help the Xbox 360 beat Sony's PS3 into second place in the console wars.
"We believe Sony PS3 will be the strongest seller of next-generation videogame consoles," said Irina Mulvey, an analyst at Kagan.

But the gap between the two consoles will be narrowed significantly and Nintendo will be left in a distant third place: "However, Microsoft's Xbox 360 will narrow the gap with Sony to come within 28% of the PS3 installed base - selling almost twice as many next-gen consoles as Nintendo Revolution by 2010."

Sony's PS2 is the undisputed leader of the current gen console pack, having sold over 90 million units worldwide since it launched in 2000. As of December 2004 the Xbox had moved 20 million units, and the GameCube had shifted 18 million.

The report also predicts that the videogame market in the US will have increased 30% by 2008, and that by 2010 54 million US households will own a games console (that's around one in every four homes). The ownership of handheld consoles will also apparently increase on a one-to-one basis with home consoles.

Moore also spoke directly to Microsoft's critics who have likened the Xbox 360 to the Dreamcast, which also had a significant first mover advantage over Sony's PlayStation 2 in the current generation, but was ultimately withdrawn from the market.

The former Sega of America boss, who oversaw the launch of Dreamcast in that territory, argued that the issues with the Dreamcast were totally different to the situation with Xbox 360, and that its mistakes "won't be repeated" by Microsoft.

Zero momentum at launch, an underfinanced company, poor ongoing support from publishers and what he described as "an atrophied brand" were to blame for the failure of Dreamcast, along with the online gaming premise simply being too early, he said.

"There is no linkage between [Xbox 360 and Dreamcast]," he concluded.
