MOSU

Another Side Another Story

Samurai Sword

Code Name: Viper

Gargoyle's Quest

Adventures in the Magic Kingdom

Mizushima Shinji no Daikoushien ost

Nemo

Street Fighter II

First I confirmed the homelands of each character before setting out to write “cool music” for them. Given my classical background, I wasn’t prepared to create music focused on rhythm, and I didn’t have the confidence that comes from experience, either.

Ken’s theme was a stereotypical 8-bit chiptune, but the themes for Guile and Ryu were 16-bit. Back then, I didn’t give much consideration for what was 8-bit and what was 16-bit, I just wrote what felt right as a melody. Since then, I’ve gone on to write a lot of battle BGM with layers and layers of detailed sound. That might be why you say that. It’s true, I do enjoy writing finely detailed rhythm. I’ve always tried to make things exciting, like hiding rhythm in the vague gaps between tones.

So you just jumped into the world of Street Fighter with an idea of a character, and that’s the melody that came out of your head?

Yoko Shimomura: That’s about right. I hear it faintly in my head, and writing out that data, we get melodies like those.

imagine you read character backgrounds and overviews and other documents to create the music for Street Fighter II. What kind of documents were most useful to you?

Yoko Shimomura: The background art was important. Each background gives an impression of the country they depict, and I asked at the beginning to include a unique sound effect for each individual stage. I was in charge of the sound effects, too. For instance, Chun-Li’s stage has a marketplace in the background where there is a sound from a bicycle. Dhalsim’s stage, as you may well know, has the trumpet of an elephant. My hope was that it would be all you’d need to conjure up an image of Dhalsim, and the other sound effects were similar in intent. I also wanted the music to blend naturally into the world of the game. Rather than writing for individual characters, I felt that writing music that matched the stage backgrounds would naturally become themes for the characters.

The King of Dragons

Capcom Classics Collection

Varth: Operation Thunderstorm

Masaki Izutani

Breath of Fire

The Punisher (1993 video game)

Buster Bros

F-1 Dream

Sweet Home

Captain Commando

Alph Lyla

Street Fighter II Collector's Box

Game Music Festival ~Super Live '92~

Do you remember the first day as a professional game music composer, when walking in through the entrance at Capcom?

I remember that I was wearing a very formal suit and absolutely not wearing jeans like today. I was introducing myself to a lot of senior staff and had a lot of meetings that first day. The day went by really fast since many things happened.

What was the first task you got assigned to at Capcom?

My first project was actually not a video game, but an arcade game. In Japan we have a type of arcade game that is quite similar to a game where you can earn money, but in these games you don’t actually earn anything. I composed the music for such a game.

How much music did you compose for it?

Hmm, there was for example one tune for winning, one for when losing and then there was one tune made to attract players to the machine. All in all, it was ten compositions.

How were the days in the beginning of your career, when you composed music for NES games at Capcom?

I was always told by many people that it was very hard to cope with that the NES only has three channels, but I didn’t have any big problems with this. Though, the storage limitation on the NES cartridges was indeed an issue.
ater on, you participated in Capcom’s own band, Alph Lyla. Do you have any fond memories you want to share with us?

Interviewer: When you were a child, I imagine you had a passion for classical music. So what made you like game music?

Shimomura: Well, when I was little...we didn't have the NES. I'm from that era where "video-games" were arcade machines you played in places across the neighborhood, so I didn’t have much contact with game music. However, during my college years, I played Super Mario Bros. for the first time and the music just enticed me. This was the first time I realized there were people who made such music possible.

Interviewer: So then, you thought of becoming one of those yourself, I imagine?

Shimomura: Ever since junior high, I had this...passion for music. However, I had no idea on what I wanted to do in the music field. Such a vague feeling made me want to work in the music field, though *where* in the music field, that was a complete blank for me.

Interviewer: So you didn't even think you'd be going into the game field huh? Moving on...when you composed music for Capcom, how did that feel?

Shimomura: Funny you'd say that, because I had no idea Capcom even existed. I only heard about it during my junior years of college. During that time, Capcom and Hudson had an event in my college where they handed out flyers for a new game called "Mankai Village" [Translator's note: This game came to the west as Ghosts and Goblins. It was originally an arcade release in 1985, and was later ported to portable consoles such as the GBA, PSP, etc.]. I then found out that there exists more than just one company of games--there's tens, perhaps hundreds of companies. I was from a family of piano players, so I had no idea I could even compose game music with just the piano.

Interviewer: If that's the case, then why did you apply for such a job [at Capcom]?

Shimomura: You see, there was this flyer announcing job positions at Capcom and it said they were hiring for the "sound creation" department. I remember that the Japanese on the poster grabbed my attention because of the horizontal characters (laughs). [TL Note: In Japan, it is considered professional if you write posters in horizontal Japanese.] I remember saying to myself: "Hey, this is the job of the people who make the music on Mario! I got to try it out!"

That said...I was about to become a piano teacher. To this day I wonder: What if they refused my application or what if the offer never showed up? (laughs)

Interviewer: When you got the job at Capcom, did you feel a certain...pressure when creating music there?

Shimomura: It was painful in the first half of the year. Every day, I just thought about quitting that job. At the time, I was still living with my parents, so every day I would bottle the feeling that "I might quit tomorrow". I wanted to do music, so I was like: "Why am I not getting any results...?!"

What was a typical day like at Capcom?

A day at Capcom back then was a pretty usual day that may include a little overtime, not unlike a Japanese salary man. Work was from 9, so I got on the train before 8, and rode the train from home, and arrived at work. When I got there in the morning, first it was my duty to wipe the desks with a cloth. I was always late back then, and often couldn’t make it in the morning. I feel bad that Manami Matsumae and Junko Tamiya had to wipe the desks for me. If we were still working together, then I’d probably owe them about a 100 desk wipes!

You said yourself you weren’t great at composing when you entered Capcom. Did you ever struggle after joining?

When I joined Capcom, it was really tough. I couldn’t make music to the point where I wondered how I got in at all. I don’t think my colleagues really got why I joined either. I only learned about composition in class as a minor part of a standard music education at university. It was really tough after joining. I got really down, and even cried on my way home sometimes

MOSU

Another Side Another Story

Live A Live

Front Mission

Super Mario Bros. was my first encounter with video games. I love the music of the Mario series. After I got assigned the job of writing the music for Super Mario RPG, I let my imagination run wild as I composed, trying to find sounds that fit with Mario walking around a town chatting people up, Mario sleeping, Mario just living his life… it’s been SOOO fun! We’re still making some refinements, so I hope you look forward to it!

Tobal No. 1

She wanted the music to be experimental, not falling into ambient or techno classifications.[3][9] One of her main goals was to create something "inorganic" and recognizable as a product of Square Enix (then Square).[10] Until Parasite Eve, Shimomura had written music in a straightforward manner that reflected her then-current state of mind, but this time she restrained herself and took a more "emotionless" approach. She felt that this would best represent the game's atmosphere and Aya's stoic attitude. Ultimately, she felt that Parasite Eve was an experimental work in many ways.[9] Due to its prevalence in the story, Shimomura used opera music, but as typical opera music did not translate well into battle themes, Shimomura added different rhythms: these rhythms were inspired when some of the game's American staff took her to a nightclub and she heard the background music there.[3] The music recording took place at the Andora Studios in Los Angeles.[8]

Parasite Eve was the first of her projects to include a vocal theme, the ending theme "Somnia Memorias". This was because the PlayStation system was the first to have sufficient processing power for this to be possible. For the vocalist, Shimomura avoided using someone well known.[7]

“I kept saying I wanted to work on a fantasy and this title finally came around. I really had fun with it. I tried hard to make it fit the style of the game and to express myself!!”

From its genesis, music has had a vital role in KINGDOM HEARTS series. A strong soundtrack is always one of the pillars of a great RPG, but this particular game came with an additional challenge for the music team: live up to Disney’s impeccable musical legacy.

A daunting task, but the team picked out the perfect woman for the job in Yoko Shimomura… although to this day, how she ended up on the project remains a bit of a mystery. “I don’t really know why I was selected,” she laughs. “Maybe it was because my schedule just happened to be free at the time!”

Whatever the reason, Shimomura immediately got to work by looking at the themes and content of the early part of the game. While doing so, she was struck by a ‘wave’ of inspiration - and Dearly Beloved was born.

She recalls: “I was playing the beginning of the game, set in the Destiny Islands, and I was struck by a lot of imagery about the sea. Dearly Beloved just came to my mind one day, while I was thinking about that - picturing the sea and the waves.”

Although her vision for the track was clear, implementing it into the game proved tricky due to the technical limitations of the PlayStation 2 console:

“In terms of technology, the sound came from hardware - tone generators, synths, samplers, and so on. We were only able to record two songs in the studio - the majority of the sound was generated internally by the PS2 and I really struggled to improve the sound quality of the instruments using the hardware.”

Dearly Beloved was completed within six months of Shimomura joining development, and she moved on to other tasks. But did the composer know what a signature of the series it was to become?

“No!” she says. “That happened later. At the time, I just thought it would be nice if it was used as an event track!”

But as it turned out, it would be much more impactful than that. What’s more, she’d get a chance to revisit the track sooner rather than later…

MOSU

Another Side Another Story

KINGDOM HEARTS Chain of Memories saw series lead Sora continue his journey in a whole new setting… and on an entirely new platform: the Game Boy Advance. Shimomura returned to compose new tracks for the game.

Dearly Beloved had been used as the title track for the original game, so it made sense for the theme to return, albeit in a different form. As before, Shimomura thought carefully about the themes of the game, and how the title track could convey them:

“From the title of the game, I used the imagery of connected memories as inspiration to use a chorus and celesta. I wanted to create a hazy, somewhat ephemeral feeling in this track.”

There was another element to consider in KINGDOM HEARTS Chain of Memories too - its relationship to the original game. The two titles are inextricably linked, and so too are their versions of Dearly Beloved.

As Shimomura says: “It’s a theme that would run through later instalments, but the story of Chain of Memoires was more about ‘time’ than the previous game. I included the melody from the ending and credits from KINGDOM HEARTS 1 as a nod to this idea of a mixed timeline.”

With the track written, there was one more challenge to confront: the Game Boy Advance itself. The audio limitations of the PS2 were nothing compared to the handheld, so was it difficult for Shimomura to hear her work on the system?

“I think it was harder for the people who had to manipulate and adjust the songs I had composed and get them onto the GBA!” she laughs.

In 2007, a remake of the GBA game released for PS2: KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories. For Shimomura, this was a fantastic opportunity to improve the sound of Dearly Beloved.

“The track was remade completely using the PS2 sound,” she says. “The GBA had so little memory, I think the sound quality is massively improved compared to the first version.

As I said before, I was going for a hazy and ephemeral sound for this track. However, with the sound quality becoming clearer in the PS2 version, I think it came out rather dreamy in the end.”

“I was quite emotionally invested and put a lot of myself into it. I’ve mentioned this in interviews before, but I was so keen that for the title screen arrangement of Dearly Beloved, I went directly to the programmers to confirm the exact timing!”

358/2

She says: “I wanted the track to have a kind of nostalgia, a longing for home, and a slightly anxious feel to it, that you can’t quite put your finger on. It’s quite difficult to put into words.”

“I didn’t intentionally set out to make this version particularly emotional. But hearing this, I wonder if perhaps it’s because the arrangement reflects the characters themselves.”

bbs

Compared to the original version, ‘the past’ was the main theme for this particular arrangement,” she says. I also thought about the strong bonds between the three main characters, and their tragic destiny.”

“No matter how hard you wish for something, you can’t always make it come true. Being swallowed up by an unavoidable destiny, but still wanting to keep your heart, never wanting to give up….

“I used the sorrowful violin in the middle of the track and the lively piano at the end to portray these themes and emotions.”

Last Ranker

the 3rd birthday

I wanted to try a lot of new ideas without being bound by any pre-existing concept of what an RPG should be,” Takahashi said to Iwata. “This also applied to the game’s audio content and I wanted to create a different atmosphere to that of titles I’d worked on previously. So I asked Shimomura-san to come up with tracks, including the main theme and the opening song.”

It comes down to how to express realism in music. From my personal perspective, I was brought up with classical music so, to me, that’s very immediate and very real, but I know that it depends on individuals and the kinds of music they are used to. It’s a very difficult thing to pin down.

The other thing with the idea of realism is that it’s an abstract concept. Music itself is abstract; it’s not as solid as other forms of art. Trying to depict something abstract on an abstract medium… well, that’s challenging!

I really felt like I was better suited to approaching it by looking at the world of Final Fantasy XV, and I created what I felt fitted with each individual aspect. This is how the bond between comrades is presented in XV, with music that I felt suited that theme.

For the battles, I pictured music suited for battles and then specific visions with the scenery. I tried to get the best music to fit with each individual aspect rather than thinking about the bigger abstract concepts.

It’s very interesting with XV actually because in some ways, it feels like I’ve been asked to do two projects! At the time the game was Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and it wasn’t part of the mainline series. I was on that project from the start, and because it wasn’t a numbered Final Fantasy, I felt like I could approach it a little more freely.

Had the development started as XV, I would probably have felt a lot more pressure from the beginning, but when this shift happened I had already worked on the project for a while, made a number of songs and had a clear idea of the concept and direction that I wanted to go with for the score. It made it a lot easier for me to continue doing that.

This is the first time I composed music for an open-world game. Given it is an open-world game, the music isn’t structured like usual where it simply switches between field and battle tracks, so I was particularly conscious of this during production. In the past, I actually worked on a game in which a particular character from the FINAL FANTASY series makes an appearance, but this is the first time I’m working on a title with the FINAL FANTASY name.

I must say it was difficult to control myself, such as regaining or increasing my motivation when the project restarted since there was a period of time where production was temporarily halted and I had been away from that process. That said, I think I’m emotionally stronger due to this experience [laughs].

"The basic scenario and story concepts haven't changed that much," she explains, speaking through a translator. "They're quite similar to what they were originally. There have been some changes, small scenario tweaks and the game's functionality itself has changed. But overall, from a musical perspective, the concepts that we wanted to use from the start, they're pretty much as they were. It's kept on the same theme, basically."

The first song I actually created for the whole project was right at the start, 10 years ago! It was the song Somnus, and this song is still in the game today. I think the overall direction of the music has been fairly consistent since the beginning of the project. There was music we knew we wanted to add specifically when the game became XV, so a lot of new things were added then, but it was because new things were being added to the game – things that needed to be supported by music.

kingdom hearts 3

In the introduction, I wanted to create a little bit of doubt, to make something seem a bit different and strange - then follow it up with the familiar refrain, to make the listener feel as though they’ve come home.

“I included a lot of different emotions in this track. I hope everyone who listens to it can interpret it in their own way.”

Phantasy Star Online 1+2

Dark Chronicle,
Rogue Galaxy
Napping Princess: The Story of the Unknown Me

kingdom hearts mom

Actually, I was, like, ‘Wait, really!? That’s great!!’,” she laughs. She was particularly pleased because it gave her an opportunity for something she’d wanted to do for years - approach Dearly Beloved from a whole new angle:

“I’d wanted to make a swing version of Dearly Beloved for a while,” she says. “I even made one for a previous installment, but at the time, it didn’t quite fit and we scrapped it.

“A version was also performed for the encore of KINGDOM HEARTS Concert -First Breath- (a concert band performance), but until now, I’d never been able to use style officially in a game.

“So this time, I wanted to take another go at it and make something really fun!”

Of all her compositions, Shimomura considers the soundtrack to Legend of Mana the one that best expresses herself and the soundtrack remains Shimomura's personal favourite

Somnus

Ominus Lacrima

Xenoblade
