THE GOOD
Occasionally funny, intentionally or otherwise
Comical and inventive multiplayer modes

THE BAD
Clunky, frustrating action
Plenty of bugs--some funny, some infuriating
Free-to-play elements in a full-price game
Utterly laughable main character

Gamesradar: 1.5/5

Ever the provocateur, Devil’s Third’s creator Tomonobu Itagaki has suggested that you need to play well to enjoy the rest of his game. But right up until the final boss (and his annoying ability to shrug off attacks), it was never deaths that bothered me. It was the lack of connection to the controls, the overripe mechanics and the dull AI. Devil’s Third is not a hateful slog in the way that Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is, but even after – or more likely because of – half a decade and four game engines, it’s shoddy and ill thought out. It captures the strange magnetism that accompanies all still-smouldering disaster sites, but that’s about the best I can say.

Gamespot: 3/10

Despite the occasional laughs and wonderfully weird multiplayer modes, Devil's Third is near-impossible to recommend. The numerous issues with the controls as well as crucial elements of the game's combat systems soon mount up to provide an experience that frustrates far more often than it entertains, resulting in a missed opportunity for what could've been a cult hit.

Kotaku: NO

Still, there’s one thing about Devil’s Third that does fit. Its name derives from ‘the devil’s interval’, a musical term describing an atonal three-note sequence designed to provoke a sense of unease in the listener – in other words, a series of familiar elements combining to make something unnatural. Itagaki and Valhalla might not have got much else right, but they could hardly have come up with a more perfect title.

Eurogamer:
Despite a decent stab at multiplayer, however, Devil's Third isn't even average. The game represents at least six years of development, but over that time the concept has been mangled. It is no accident that Tecmo's Team Ninja hasn't managed a good game since the 2008 departure of Itagaki and others. But Devil's Third makes you wonder where the talent went.

G** is a Geek: 3/10
The sad fact is that Devil’s Third is not good enough in 2015, regardless of which console it’s released for. The Wii U may not have the horsepower to match PS4 and Xbox One, but this is the console that gave us ZombiU and Bayonetta 2. It can handle a lot more than Devil’s Third is dishing out, and Valhalla’s game simply under-performs in every area that counts.

Gamereactor: 5/10
Perhaps it's also due to the fact that, well, the story has no rhyme or reason and its main character seems to be pretty aware of it when he confronts, shirtless and without letting go of his cigar, an entire army by himself. But the thing is that Devil's Third has a certain charm if you decide to cut it some slack (a lot of slack, to be honest), that is, if you accept its mistakes and you don't take it too seriously.

MyNintendoNews: 7/10
In its own right, Devil’s Third has an astute multiplayer experience and features wonderfully wacky drill matches, which are a pleasure to play. Though its single-player campaign doesn’t quite hit the mark, and clever moments are often fleeting, it’s still a worthy game for any Wii U owner. Perhaps it’s the Devil’s multiplayer charm that keeps me playing – it’s certainly not story mode’s horns.

Digital Spy: 1/5
Devil's Third is an offensively bad - sometimes actually offensive - action game, with sub-standard melee combat and fiddly gunplay. Riddled with technical issues, it's almost completely devoid of any redeeming qualities. It also has killer bats.

LazyGamer: 4/10

When you get down to it, Devil’s Third is not a good game and its best bits are coming to PC as a free-to-play game, making it redundant as a full priced purchase. Devil’s Third bears the scars of a game that’s had the troubled sort of development that would lead to other games being cancelled. In this case, it should have been

I Love Videogames: 7/10
"The million Dollen question is: "Is Devil's Third as bad as they say on the internet?". No, absolutely not. It's not a particularly good game either. It has some excellent gameplay features constantly frustrated by the horrible level layout and by some absurd design choices. The multiplayer, on the other hand, is fun, fresh and frantic, even with some balancing issues. It's in the multiplayer that the gameplay really shines. Devil's Third is a very strange game. It's clearly not a masterpiece, but it could become one of those "so bad it's good" cult classics. That's why you should track it down, maybe when the price drops, so that you can say "i own it, and i even played it"

IGN.IT: 4.0
Devil's Third triumphantly fails both as an action game and as a shooter: Itagaki's fall from grace is thunderous and bewildering, and the drama is almost surreal. It's hard to tell what happened to the genius behind Ninja Gaiden, but the result here is frankly depressing.
