  • Good catch on the music. The email that was sent to Sony was very nice and well worded. I’m happy that this was done to prevent any controversy while maintaining the love for a great game that will be released. Sony is also great for taking respectful steps to fixing this issue which is fantastic. I’m happy that this is something that wasn’t escalated to the point of ranting and anger as it always does from us muslims. Maybe muslims should follow the example of muslim gamers. Then people would be more respectful and nicer towards things. Good stuff!

  • I wanted to add one more thing. Too bad this had to happen with the Quran because honestly, it would have been nice to incorporate arabic music and culture into gaming to open up the people to the good things we got. Unfortunately whoever picked this passage out made a mistake and Sony (as well as other game studios) will probably have a rule banning ALL arabic music and middle eastern references due to the fear of offending anyone. So in a way it’s good. In another way, it sucks and I’m definitely dissapointed even though this is in my mind not deliberate by Sony

  • I didn’t mean to sound so insensitive. I know it is just a small group of the muslim community that gets upset at such small insignificant things. Not all muslims are so overly sensitive, and I dont mean to lay the blame on all of you. Just the ones that are so oversensitive as to get upset by such small things like this. Oh no a grammy award winning song was used in a game. I am deeply offended. -.-

  • What I don’t understand is that the song is sung my a Muslim singer. Why is that people attacked Sony and Sony Studios for releasing this song when the song is sung by a person who calls himself a ‘devout Muslim’. Very disappointing that this had to come to this. But don’t say this is Sony’s fault, it’s Toumani Diabate

  • While I’m never a fan of people being offended, this comes as a pretty ridiculous turn of events.

The song in question has been out for 2 years. The song is by a Muslim artist. The game in no way is insulting to Muslims (in fact the song itself was used to promote multiculturalism for the game).

It’s this kind of radical bs that gets on everyone’s nerves and causes more harm than good to the Muslim community.

Disclosure: I’m one of the people who pre-ordered this game and I was really looking forward to playing it this week. It’s a shame this kind of crap has to rain on the parade. Hopefully the changes will please everyone.

  • Fellow English speaking gamers, please do not use translation tools. You can speak your mind in English without worry, you don’t need to write your message in Arabic. The translation tools butcher your communicated ideas into a packet of gibberish Arabic that makes little sense.

For those who wonder why there was no opposition to the record in question prior to this incident, it’s not the first item to be considered blasphemy to Muslim belief in Art. The Artist is from Mali, which as it does have a Muslim population, that does not mean it comes within uniform of all Muslim beliefs, Islam has a number of sectarian groups that very few secular groups find it okay to sing phrases from the Qu’ran. While a lot of Muslims in the Middle East view it as blasphemy, they have the choice of not listening or buying the records. If such track is played on a Gulf country radio channel it would be a huge uproar

Such track might be controversial, but not something that would come by Muslims outside the Mali population scope, who I guess wouldn’t have a problem being into terms with it.

Its unfortunate that LBP was delayed as it was the wish from Muslim gamers for a 0 day patch to avoid such controversy. However, Sony have showed a really sound business decision to tackle this by recalling all released copies. As frustrating as it for the gamers who were waiting for this game, Sony is still a business with recognized brand loyalty in the Middle East. It would really hurt Sony if this slipped by and with the instigation of some sly extremists led to a bad PR nightmare for Sony in the Middle East. They make 1.3b$ a year from the Middle East. It would have been a huge business nightmare.

  • I hope You guys realise that this issue is causing more trouble for your race and religion than if it had never been spoken of in the first place. Im gonna end up sounding like a racist here, but i assure you i am not, i have many Muslim friends, however i am a christian myself. It seems we had to tip toe through this issue for some reason or another, We never heard of this happening with Resistances ‘manchester church’ issue i can understand that you guys never meant for this to happen, but surely you couldn’t have expected sony and media molecule to JUST release a patch, as this would simply not be enough, what about those with no online? This now means that for me (and millions of other gamers) that sony’s wondergame has had to be delayed YET AGAIN, This may not seem like a big deal to those in the US (October 27th Release) but for those who for some reason are less favourable among sony (europe) we have to wait till mid november, and as for australia, they might be lucky enough to get this before New year. Next time You feel ‘offended’ by a game, start to do the math, does little big planet look like it’s out to hurt anybody? i really dont think they put this in on to hurt you, but it seems you didn’t stop to think about that, or the fact that the aussies (and no i am not from australia) now have to wait till january to get this, how about you just asked for an apology at most, We christians never kicked up a fuss when saints row decided that your gangs hideout would be a church, sure, that was pretty demeaning to our religion, but we let it go, because we knew the developers meant nothing by it… I can understand that SOME members of your community could get offended, but you need to tell them that nobody means anything by it.
Thanks to your rather selfish decision i have to wait three weeks to get this game LATE for my daughters 9th birthday, how can i tell an 8 year old that she can’t get her birthday preasent due to some people taking offense from the most inoffensive game ever made, this is pathetic, and now, unfortunately for you, muslims are going to be the ones getting bad publicity and hate mail, not sony and media molecule, Well done!

  • Alex, it’s unfortunate that LBP was delayed. I don’t think it was ever the intention of Nsider as a whistle blower for things to explode to this proportion. We are sorry that your daughter will not be getting her Birthday present on time, when the Muslim gamers acted upon the hick up they only asked for a patch. I wish that Sony responded to their suggestion rather than going overboard.

We are not talking out of our ass here, we have the background and insight about the public opinion in Muslim countries, by the time the news of LBP lyrics reaches clergy it would have went through a lot of distortion and ill suggestions about the game that would deem it banned for us fellow gamers. We love our video games.. we enjoy them as much as any other bloke in the world. I hope you understand that this is not the first incident where this happened

Muslims are not offended by the game as you suggest, there is nothing offending about Little Big Planet as a video game. However, the game was unfortunate enough to include a track mixing music instruments with Qurán verses, which is something blasphemous to majority of Muslims. I hope that you understand that Muslims hold the Qurán dear to their heart and respect it.. Even if you find the most rugged teenager social rebels who listen to death metal in a Muslim country… if you park next to them at a traffic light and they notice that you have Qurán recited.. you will see them lowering/muting the volume out of respect.

  • Well played guys .. : ), if all Muslims were like you guys we would be okay .. !

now I wanna say one thing for ryan, we Muslims aren’t sensitive just we respect our religion and other religions, if u need a proof on that the Arab world meaning Muslim world didn’t accept the movie (( The Da Vinci Code )) because of it’s concept but if u don’t respect ur religion that’s ur own problem .. !, just u must respect our opinion.

  • A message to Alex,

All these lines you wrote are none-sense… its like us muslims who wanted to delay the game itself, actully i’m pretty mad about the decission sony made by delaying the game, I just wanted a patch to fix this problem, but it seems like they are going to double-check it, well, it looks like sony wants to delay the game, and us “muslims” is their best easy reason…

    A message to Lard,

“There’s the problem. You’re *forcing* people to respect your religion.” , we just want you guys to respect our opinions..

Guys think about it, this game is mainly for children, all ages can play it, but mostly for children and I remember when I was a child if I see a cartoon and there was a catchy song in it, I keep humming it and sing it, and this song has some qu’ran words, so.. I don’t want a child to sing Qu’ran.

I really get upset when I hear there was a religiuos problem in a game, and it happend alot, it just why they have to do it, is there another better options ? right Alex?

  • Toumani Diabate is the man behind Tapha Niang, the song that caused the LittleBigPlanet delay. Diabate, from Mali, is a Muslim. And can’t see anything wrong with including sections from Islam’s holy book in his music.

“It’s quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed. It’s my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam”

The non-profit American Islamic Forum For Democracy has spoken out against Sony’s decision to recall LittleBigPlanet, calling the move “censorship”.

    M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D, director of the AIFD, said that, “Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted.”

  • you see the problem here is that there is something VERY VERY VERY wrong when Sony spends (wastes) all that money because ONE’s religious sensitivity was offended, but conversely is not really worried at all about another ONE’s religious sensititvity. There is one word that sums up the reason for this different behaviour and I have not seen it in the posts so far:
    FEAR!
Yes, the problem is that we westerners now SHIT OUR PANTS when the cry of “offense!” comes from a muslim.
    That is a FACT.
Sony fucked up. The person who initially complained, reasonably suggested a patch be released.
Sony should have said “ok, sorry, whatever”, even if they had NOTHING to be sorry about, just to brush the problem aside, and delivered a patch. What they did, instead, was create another foreboding precedent.
But still the problem remains that as another poster wrote, if the recall had not been done and news had gotten to their clergy, it would have been exploited and blown out of proportion. So Sony perhaps didn’t screw up, but was just scared, not sensitive, SCARED.
But if people here agree that Sony fucked up, that it was a gross mistake to recall the games, I want to read that thousands of gaming muslims wrote Sony, but more pertinently on their own forums, that it was a mistake on Sony’s part to pander so to one group and not another. If you think taht Sony made a mistake, but you won’t tell your fellow musloms, then you are hypocrites. Or, more likely, just scared like us, and that is also WRONG.

  • OneZeez:
” Sony used the song excuse to delay the game release date because the game wasn’t complete” : you know this because …. ?.
Unless every article I’ve read is lying, Sony recalled items already sent out and furthermore the delay in the US should, by all accounts, be minimal, and thus hardly enough to fix a bug or finish something that wasn’t completed.
“The guys at TrueGamer only asked for a first day patch, don’t blame them for the delay”. Nothing to say about that one. In fact I don’t play Video games, so obviously I am not affected by the delay.
I am appalled by the path chosen by Sony. You should be appalled too. I don’t think the people who complained did anything wrong, quite the contrary. If you don’t like something by all means say it. If saying has no effect, avoid what disturbs you. There may be cases where this is not possible, cases in which at the basis of what you don’t like lies a universal human principle being wronged and action may be required. But this is not the case here. It’s pretty easy to avoid being disturbed by a video game: don’t buy it if you are an adult, don’t buy it for your children if you are a parent.
I have not frequented Muslims since I was at Uni almost 15 years ago (I was a card-holding member of the Pakistani Society of my Uni in London, I probably still have the card somewhere). But the ones I called friends would not have cared one bit about the music, and I suspect that neither would the majority of Muslims worldwide.
Were the “guys at TrueGamer ” offended by the music? I did not get that impression. So who would have been offended?
50000 Muslims who don’t buy video games anyway or 100 million game – buying Muslims? Because only in the latter case would it make sense to recall the games. But who can really believe that?
It is the belief of many westerners like me that the reason behind Sony’s action is not economic, but rather a case of fear for personal safety. Tell me I’m wrong and why, please. If you are a video-game playing Muslim, would you have been offended?

I don’t want to turn the topic into a religious matter, just wanted to note one thing, why we must be the week ones, if one of us criticized any Christian or Jew symbol he would be Racist, but when it come for us we should let others downgrade of beliefs and criticizes them .. ! and by the way I don’t need friends who doesn’t respect my beliefs, and F.Y.I Most of my friends are Christians so u don’t think that I’m an extremist.

  • I was able to get a hold of the game from a company that didn’t know that the game was recalled. The song in level 4 swinging safari is beautiful and amazing. I haven’t heard anything like it. This could have been an opportunity to draw people into the muslim community or at least make people curious but i think after what had been done the effect will be the opposite. I respect the oppinion of the muslim community (even as a christian) but wish the song could have been used in a way to bring people together and not create so much upset. .
The game is full of great songs and this one is my favorite by far. It will make me sad if its the one that will be removed. .

  • i will never understand why this song should be erased from LBP. May be the solution should be give gamers the choice to listen to their own music. i understand that some people, muslims or not don’t, want to hear some part of a song but as you see, many people love this song and it’s sad all this turned into some religious thing.which always end up in shit.I wish all this will come to an end that pleases everyone
